Pinocchio Episode 1 Reactions
Another reviewer was correct in that the beginning of this show is heavily influenced by Slum Dog Millionaire, in terms of the male lead having a flashback to explain his answer...
1.Our show begins in a small high school. The students are tuning in to a nationally broadcasted quiz show where the schools smartest student, Ahn Chan Soo is the reigning champ. At the same time, a student named Chou Dal Po is absent and the female lead, Choi In Ha, remarks that he must be absent. It should be noted she has Pinocchio Syndrome (made up).
2.Everyone is thunderstruck to see that the challenger is actually Choi Dal Po. He is ranked 34th in his school (out of 34) and has an extremely cheesy opening video as his intro where he poses and acts cool in an exaggerated way (I like it). At the shows opening, he speaks to Choi In Ha and promises to ask her something if he wins, but they cut to the contest.
3.Question 1 is about Pinocchio Syndrome. He uses his chance card to ask for help (on the first and easiest question). He asks Ahn Chan Soo for the answer. If he gives him the wrong answer, he will slap him ten times (this shocks everyone) but if he helps him, he can slap him ten times. Ahn Chan Soo agrees to help but never gives an answer. Still, Choi Dal Po provides the correct answer, and explains he knows because he has a classmate with the syndrome, but she is unique in that she talks a lot and is known as the 'Blunt Witch'.
4.The second question is related to naming dates (related to mensa...I think). We get flashback to a young Dal Po, whose name is actually Ki Ha Myung. He often wowed his family with his ability to do calculations with dates. They move to a neighborhood and encounter a grandmother and her older grandson who is a pinnochio--and irritated that he is outsmarted by a little boy. Later , his father ,who is a chief firefighter, gets a call. he and his crew set out.
5.They arrive at a factory. It's manager reports that there are two people inside. The team goes in. Not long after, two employees appear and explain they started the fire and were hiding out of embarrassment/fear. The manager tells them he just sent a team of fire fighters inside. Instead of trying to warn them, they keep quiet. Their is oil improperly stored in the building and it explodes, killing all the fighters. However, every body except for the chief is accounted for. This unleashes a media storm as everyone believes the chief has absconded after risking the lives of his men because the manager tells the authorities that he 1)tried to stop him from going inside and 2)reported everyone was out
6)The media slanders the fire chiefs name. Crowds hound the family: Myung, his older brother, and mother. One of the more relentless reporters is a beautiful woman who also just found out her husband is divorcing her. She is deeply invested in getting ratings, and exaggerates or twists the truth. When a pinnochio (guess who, the irritated number) reports of seeing the fire chief (if you believe you are telling the truth it isn't a knowing lie) and does not hesitate to call it in. People harass the family. Myung tries to defend his father on television, and for a moment it seems like relentless reporter lady almost feels guilty, but someone throws in egg at Myung triggering his elder brother's rage. Relentless reporter lady wants to show this footage, but her producer tells her not to because they have no solid evidence yet that the man is in fact alive. Still, she blurs out their faces and shows it....
7.Later, his older brother visits the reporter to do an interview (we don't know if that happened) and his mother, who has seriously reached her breaking point, tells her son they will meet his father. This translates to committing suicide by jumping into the ocean. The next day elder brother shows up, the reporters are there, and the same reporter lady continues to spin her stories.
8.Meanwhile, a young Choi In Ha is on a boat with her father. They are leaving her mother, and her father gets angry whenever she is mentioned. She too has Pinocchio syndrome. They arrive at the home of her grandfather who has dementia, on a secluded island. There her grandfather brings out his 'son' a little boy her age, and he introduces her as his niece. His name is Dal Po. The boy is actually Myung. he reveals he has no family (what about his elder brother?) and that he has been pretending to be the old man's son since whenever he recalls he is dead he gets ill. They accept this.
9.Dal Po and In Ha have a rocky start as she accuses him of using her grandpa. But he essentially throws it back at her. She is honest, and although she has Pinocchio syndrome, he appreciates that she is honest and owns her mistakes (she is also cocky and confident and I like it). He helps her to fix the t.v. because he learns her mother is on it. He promises to not tell her father because he would break the t.v.
10.The t.v. comes on, and guess who her mother is? Relentless t.v. reporter. This causes Dal Po to do a 180 in personality. He angrily leaves, tells her father that she fixed the t.v. and has been trying to reach her mom. Her father has an angry outburst and destroys the t.v. She comes out in tears and asks him to help but he knocks her to the ground and essentially tells her to die.
11.We go back to the present, and Choi In Ha is confident that he will win. Someone asks if she loves him and she says no, and she doesn't hiccup so she must be telling the truth. Elsewhere, Myung's older brother is carrying some things into a store and he stops in his track because ...grown up Myung is on t.v....
Comments:
I do not understand the firefighter procedure. Firefighters are supposed to ALWAYS stay in pairs and they are not supposed to try to save people who can't be saved. When they arrived, the room these guys were supposedly in was sealed up, the building was a factory (meaning their could have been chemicals) and it was entirely engulfed. Also, they did not even TRY to man a water hose and put out the fire.
That aside, the show seems interesting. I haven't watched a kdrama in a long time and wanted to try something short and sweet. This seems good.

Also, I like how Dal Po is playing the game show and the flashback occur. I'm sensing some Slum Dog Millionaire inspirations. Some how it works. It baffles me how despite flashbacks this first episode is a rush.
I'm already interested in the story and characters! Yeah to another strong willed/minded female lead. If I'm right about this show being a commentary on the News and I'm wondering how Pinocchio will progress. At least that this point it seems like I get to enjoy watching Lee Jong Suk in another great drama. (Knock on wood.)

All in all it was an awesome first episode. I am really glad that I gave it a try. Park Shin Hye's acting seems to have improved and Lee Jong Suk doesn't disappoint either. Moreover there are a lot of other great actors that I recognize from other dramas.

The first half of the episode relied horribly on cliches, especially when we delve into his past, so much so I could see things coming from a mile off, and felt my attention wandering...but I'm happy to say, after the halfway point, things improved drastically. (The point where the mom takes Dal Po to let off some fireworks...)
Also, I am so, so happy, PSH did not weep ONCE throughout this!
Praise the deity. Long may it continue, lol.
