A very underrated drama!!
so this was released yearsss ago? i have been avoiding this due to the tragic ending until recently i watched a drama that has horrrible horrible cgi and production. i read from the reviews that this has superb production with huge budget, so to pacify myself over the previous drama i watched, i gave this a gobelieve me, i have been avoiding dramas with tragic ending but according to reviews, there's no other way to end this drama but that
and true !!!
the acting was trully exceptiona!, when the FL is sad, she is not just crying a river , he cried her heart out convincingly that she will pull you to her plight. she is strong, playful (but not like FL on the dramas that they will look like kids) ,
the ending was (surprisingly, the ending i wanted it to be since the first part of the drama) satisfying, even without the scenes of the old ML, i wouldnt complain! It is the first drama/series i watched that has a tragic ending (not sad) yet it made me feel so happy it ended that way.
The production!! as in WWWWOOOOWWWW!!!! it is a feast for the eyes! the costumes are so well detailed even on close up, some even looks like real leather , the palace are like the palaces on fantasy dramas, very luxurious! it trully justified it's huge budget!
You will, im telling you, you will miss one of the well crafted asian drama if you won't watch this! i put this away for too long due to my obsession with happy ending, never realized that tragic ending can also be a happy ending for a viewer! i guess one of the convincing power behind that very satisfying ending is credited to the FL's superb acting that you yourself will even wish to die several times is you were in her shoes!

I absolutely love this series. Piao xe ren did an excellent job portraying a strong, wreckless and mischevious princess. The ending was punchy, unexpected and truly iced the storyline. The main lead for the prince also portrated his jealousy and relentless behaviour exceptionally. The only thing I thought could have been done better was the chemistry created in the beginning.. there was some awkward hugs between xiao feng and gu xiawo, perhaps it was early days and the actors were still easing through the line. The dachi tribes reminded me of GOT. Wished we saw more of them! They were unique. I also love the setting and landscape of xi state/dachi. Beautiful cinematography. Also, loved General Pei and his charasmatic aura. So far this series and eternal love are hands down my fave C-dramas. OST for both are music to my ears, hearty and gives me flashbacks of the touching scenes. Was this review helpful to you?

Goodbye My Princess was truly a drama that captivates you from the moment you start watching it, here's why. My review will be more in depth and may contain spoilers throughout but I will try to avoid them until the very end of this review.
Disclaimer: I almost NEVER wait for dramas since I prefer bingeing them or waiting until they have more episodes but I didn't miss a week of this drama (even during my midterms) cause it's so constantly moving. There was never a dull moment. I also cried a whole bucket of tears from this drama but that's expected if you can take away hints about the story. If not, I recommend tissues if you find yourself spontaneously crying from dramas.
Xiao Feng, our leading lady is the 9th Princess of a rival nation to Li Cheng Yin's, the prince of his nation as well. It's odd because they weren't originally even paired up from the start, but it's their story that invokes so many emotions throughout this drama. The story line is essentially split into two parts (the details of which I will spare but it is a sort of warning) between the two main leads. It's interesting since the only other time I've encountered this was Untouchable Lovers. As a historical drama, it's got your main ingredients: drama within the palace, love rivals, revenge plots and plain old scheming. It's all of these elements that Xiao Feng and Li Cheng Yin have to face in the midst of their relationship. In that sense, you get the equation for your typical historical drama. However, Goodbye My Princess wasn't a typical drama to me at least. I think that's due to the two settings within the drama, kind of two separate lives that are connected by their involuntary fate with each other. Xiao Feng and Li Cheng Yin just have this destiny to them that you want to see completely, you just crave their ending more than anything because it's so well-developed. I won't spoil or talk about specifics or the whole plot, but I think it's something you have to experience yourself. I for one was enchanted by the writing, cinematography and story. (Also, the side characters are important for sure in their developments as characters but I think the focus of their story is the main dish for sure. Shoutout to Gu Jian who almost gave me 2nd lead syndrome)
Aside from story, I do have to give props to the acting. It was beyond amazing the chemistry you see between Cheng Xing Wu (Li Cheng Yin) and Peng Xiao Ran (Xiao Feng) through the whole drama. They captivated that feeling of love, the kind that makes you want to watch the drama more, through their looks and superb acting. I was also enamored by the acting of Najima, who played A'Du, the closest friend of Xiao Feng (almost sisters to be honest). Her acting was quite impressive to me between the way that she doesn't even need to really talk to convey her acting. It was a splendid cast, and even though she's not listed at the moment of this review, the actress for SeSe (who I believe is Xia Wa) played a perfect love rival to Xiao Feng.
Now as many of you may be familiar with, we have the OSTs. The songs that we either skip after hearing it once or listen to it every time it's played. I do find the opening song for the drama to be compelling almost, it really sets the mood of the drama, especially the initial setting of it. I did happen to hear the version that was sang by the main leads (the one in the drama is sung by another duo) and it just made me fall in love with this drama more. I recommend you listen to it if you like the ballad type OSTs and are the person to check them out.
Would I re-watch this drama? Definitely. I would focus on more parts than others but I do think it's worth the re-watch. I can totally see myself getting into my feels even after watching it for a second time.
Between us, it's Scarlet Heart Ryeo level for me. It may be a drama some people hate / like but it's a sure as hell amazing Korean historical drama and it's what got me into historical ones so check it out if you haven't. IU plays the main role amazingly.
This has been Goodbye My Princess. If this review doesn't make you slightly want to watch it, I implore you to watch at least the first few episodes to make a judgement call.
(Also, I know there were videos that I saw briefly about other endings but I do think it's better to watch those post the 52 episodes.)

Somewhere around episode 20, it started to feel like nothing was happening (and the episodes, at least on Viki, were noticeably shorter). The political scenes bored me, but I did love Pei Zhao and the two princesses, as they added some much-needed lightheartedness. Gu Jian's character seemed pretty unnecessary.
I almost dropped the drama but I was actually looking forward to the tragic ending so I made myself pick it back up. I wish that the final storyline had began sooner in the drama, as it was a really interesting turn of events that could have been developed more. The tragic moment... I'm saddened that it ended that way. Did it have to? I'm still torn about it.

I love this show! It is probably one of my favorite dramas. I really loved the main actors Chen Xing Xu and Peng Xiao Ran b/c I thought they played their roles really really well. I totally recommend this to everyone. The filming is also excellent, they put a lot of hard work into this and it turned out fantastic. Even though the ending was sad but I was able to follow along with how the main characters were feeling. The music that was with this show was fantastic, it really caught the mood of the scenes and was really good! 10/10 recommend!!! Thank you for this amazing show :) Was this review helpful to you?
Heart-aching Tragic Love
OST? 10/10. Tell spotify to keep it available- I will practically become insane without the OST.The cast? Perfection. tell me how did they manage to find actors that can carry the depth and complexities of their characters without slipping an uncharacteristic side of self? I feel like I'm watching a love story that is documented through scrolls and scripts. The drama is so beautifully theatric.
The plot? The writers spent time on it. That's for sure. The time doesn't feel rushed, and we get a clear understanding of problems as they arise. The plot makes sense when it comes to the character's relationships and temperaments.
I also feel like the costumes of this drama had netizens and other drama stylists on a grip. After this drama, it feels like I have been seeing Xiao Feng in different fonts everywhere.

A drama more heart wrenching than Scarlet heart ryo.
I watched this drama after my exams were over. And oh boy! I made a good decision. It is such a heart wrenching drama that i wasn't able to move on for a long time. Not only that i wasn't able to watch other dramas for at least a 3 to 4 months.
It doesn't mean that this drama is bad. Actually the drama is great. A perfect drama to have tons of tears.
The story is about Li cheng yin who is the fifth prince of central plains. When he heard that the empress who he thought was his mother actually killed his own mother , he schemed a plan to be the crown prince of central plain and avenge his mother. To fulfil his plan he used the ninth princess of western liang in every possible way making her a life miserable.
Even though he loved her from the bottom of his heart, he failed to protect her in the dangerous eastern palace.
Both the actors did wonderful job in portraying their characters. I don't know if anybody else would be able to pull off the characters as much as they did.
I have become a fan of Oliver chen after I saw his acting. Li cheng yin is such a complex and skeptical character. and the actor portrayed it to the perfection. Peng Xiao ran did excellent job to display the innocent as well as mischievous Xiao feng who we all loved.
I am waiting for them to act together in other historical drama.
The ost are awesome. Its actually helped to intensify the emotions while watching the drama. Even when now I hear them, tears fall from my eyes as i remember the scenes.

This drama will break your heart into little pieces. I feel so sorry for the OTP's love for each other. They were doomed not to end up with each other at the start. So this story goes, the Prince and Princess from different neighbor countries makes a marriage alliance to keep the peace between two countries. However, along the way, the main lead Prince killed the Princess's beloved grandfather. She lost her memories that contained her relationship with the Prince. So, she ended up going to the Prince's country for her marriage alliance. The Prince also lost his memory, as the Princess jumped into the river of oblivion, and the Prince followed after her. So, they both lost their memories of knowing each other. Throughout this whole ordeal-the Prince is trying to make his way to the throne. He loves the princess very much, but because he killed her people and wanted to take over her country---That didn't sit well with her. At the end, he ended up alone, sad and miserable. Overall, a very good drama!!! Was this review helpful to you?

This dram probably the first tragic drama I've eve watched. I have never ever loved and hated a drama at the same time before. Watching GMP made me realise how emotionally unstable I am haha. The drama really gave me a glimpse of riding on roller coaster and lots of plot twists which is make sense for dramas. Even though the drama had tons of angst, painful moments and loopholes, it was still one of my favourite historical cdrama.
STORY
Despite the beautiful costumes and statisfied visual, the story is typical like other cdramas, I think it is similar to The Rise of Phoenixes with the inconsistency in characters. Normally there are outright heroes, villains, and anti-heroes in a show. The plot follows your basic, this made the drama a lot more watchable because I wasn't constantly frustrated and think a lot with the characters and story. What I frustated the most is their "love story" which made me wonder and questioning a lot of things yet imagining my own ending. In order to seek justice that happened 20 years ago, Li ChengYin betrayed betrayed the trust of the woman he loves, how did he expect her to forgive him while he spends a lifetime full of regret and loneliness.
I think it really took so much time to regain their memories, I mean the progress is really slow. Li ChengYin did regain his memories on two last episodes which is really frustated and sucks to watch. I have been waiting their regaining their memories on E20-30 so we could see the development of each characters.
There is two biggest problem in this drama is First, when Gu Jian pretending to be Gu Xiao Wu which was very nightmare for me and I lost my interest to watch every episodes that his in and second, their love story has ended into tragic one.
CAST
- Li ChengYin
This bloody jerk! I like the way he looks at Xiao Feng and his love towards her. The first 10th episodes most likely my favourite part. I felt the villain side of Li ChengYin over his "Love" and it was really intersting for me since not many dramas chose to betray their love ones. I found myself liking the drama more and more as I fell into the trap of forgiving him, or even pitying him.
- Xiao Feng
Afterall, she is just very beautiful princess who seeking attention at the same time all her want to pity her injustice towards her clans. She is very outright to show her feeling
- Gu Jian
He is better died. All he thinks his lifes with Xiao Feng which is only on his imagination. I was really upset at the writer because he is still alive until 40 episodes.
OVERALL
TBH, I really love the OTP a lot. I like how the actor potrayed Li ChengYin perfectly even though there is so much overacted. If you like fast food, you could try to watch this one. This is the best fast food when you craving for tragic drama. This drama is full of angst and painful in order to sacrified for the country and clan, you had to betray your beloved lady.. From the beginning they never meant to live a happy life. He broke her heart and he made her cry, well reality is not all about a happy ending..

One of a kind drama, especially for a historical c-drama
I don't know what to say...Goodbye, my princess is my favorite c-drama in terms of being a historical drama. The actors' chemistry is amazing, the main characters are strong and independent, the storyline from the original novel is so well executed, and their costumes are extremely beautiful and unique. Even though there isn't a happy ending (more of a bittersweet love story), I think it was the right decision considering he hurt her so much. BUT I love the extra scenes the director came up with at the end, when they are reincarnated in modern-day, living their lives together. Some people may hate it because of how messed up the main character is but... I sorta like it, it portrays how political matters affected one's life and what normally happened back in the day.. besides all the cute romance scenes of course.OST: The BEST idk what to say lol, the sad songs will make you cry because you will remember all the sad scenes and yet the happy songs will make your heart sink, remembering all the good times they shared together.
BTW: I just want to warn you that this is the kind of drama that will leave you feeling all kinds of things when you finished it. It took me a whole 2 weeks to recover lol. I even dedicated an MV to them on my youtube channel if y'all are interested "Xiao Feng Li & Cheng Yin (Goodbye My Princess 东宫 MV) {Love Catastrophe}" channel name "Emma Lee" :)
HOWEVER: I don't think I would want to rewatch it, it's a long drama and I think it's one that I will rewatch scenes... not the entire drama.

Sad, heartbreaking but beautiful drama
Omg this is in my top 5 chinese dramas for sure! At first I was reluctant to give this a try, but i am glad i watched it. First of all, the cast are amazing. Their acting is 10/10 especially the main male lead. It's amazing how he immediately transforms between his different personalities. Also, I love how the main female lead was able to portray her emotions really well. It evoked my emotions so much just from watching her every time something heartbreaking happened. I think that this drama was also written very well and it is one of the most heartbreaking chinese historical drama ever; the way that the main male lead treated the female lead... I cried so much watching this. I was sucked into it from start to finish and omg I have to say that the clothes are so beautiful in this drama too!The OST's are also really beautiful and it is really melancholic.
Overall I would highly, highly recommend this drama and I would put it in my top 5.
