Fantastic sequel

Along With the Gods: Last 49 Days (2018)

The theme is about forgiveness. This time it's Kim Su Hong's turn to go through the trial. Just like Suhong i felt like the trial was just a convenient excuse to go through the final judgment and reveal all the twists which were a lot.

In the first movie Gangrim was in Seoul and the other 2 were with Jahong. Now it's the other way around. The 2 were in Seoul in Sungju trying to find out what happened to them while Gangrim was obsessed with winning Suhong's case.

Suhong's character was annoying so I didnt really care much about his case. Although I already predicted halfway through the story it was still shocking to find out how the 3 guardians were related to each other and why they ended up being guardians. Ha Jung Woo again was amazing, Ju Ji Hoon was funny and Kim Hyang Gi was precious.

The final reveal about Gangrim's father was the last twist I didnt expect!! If only Gangrim knew all along.
"Did the thousand years of regret feel like hell?"
"No. The fact that I cannot beg for his forgiveness and that I cannot be forgiven. That has been my worst hell."

I enjoyed both movies. Not sure if they will ever make part 3, because they wrapped up everyone's story, but I wouldnt mind seeing the 3 guardians again!

Rating: 8.5/10

As Sequels Do Often

Foremost, I appreciate how the sequel picks up right at the ending of it predecessor. If you enjoyed the first movie, this one is definitely worth the watch as it covers a significant portion of the guardians' past lives. Unfortunately it lacks the same charisma (potentially due to losing Cha Tae Hyun as a main) and the characters all get a bit cornier. Outside of the guardians' backgrounds, the blanketing plot around the grandfather and kid is pretty dull and the lackluster acting for the roles enhance this. The actions scenes however have improved a tad and the animation work feels even better this time around.

Most sites I've used to stream the movie has the same horrible subtitles. It left me guessing incorrectly on what was going on and twenty minutes in, I would have unfairly given the movie a significantly lower rating. Make sure you find one with subtitles that actually make sense (personally went with Viki).

More of the same, but with higher "highs" and more frequent "lows"

PROS:
+ There are some great elements to the complex and imaginative story that form a strong connection between the main characters and the viewer
+ A lot of the "afterlife" scenes are beautiful and interesting to look at; at times looking like "frameable" artwork pieces
+ Don Lee is loveable and cool (the Uncle role suits him well)
+ This film has some issues, but boredom isn't one of them

CONS:
- There are too many layers to the story (and far too many characters) to keep track of within the run-time
- This movie is quite lengthy, yet it seems to have missing details which can make it confusing
- The plot relies HEAVILY upon the first movie [you will need to remember everything or you will be even more confused]

This movie is a beautiful mess. Everything about it is awkward and hard to follow, but it looks so cool that you don't want to turn it off.

At times it feels like three different movies [they eventually do connect]. One of these stories is the highlight of the whole franchise!

If you enjoy the fantasy concepts of afterlife and trials to reincarnation, then these are worth watching.

Death is a part of Life

I think I liked this a little bit more than the previous one because historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and it was incorporated so well in the story.

The suspenseful vibe of this drama movie still feels very accurate and the plot twists, even if some were foreseeable, made the story so interesting that it could transport right into the fantastical universe!

I liked that we found out more about the grim reapers and that this time, the story happens on two plans. On one side, we have the typical story of guiding one's soul and on the other side, we have an adventurous action in which gods are implicated.

This movie also felt so peaceful at some points, letting you reflect on the characters' lives and also on your own. It is so emotional and yet it shows you the fragile beauty of life, the human suffering and yet it teaches you to appreciate the time you have on earth.

Both movies are masterpieces!

A trip through Hell

I'll keep this short and sweet.
Spoilers ahead:

Question: How do you make an entire movie, quite literally, around the twitch of a hand?

Answer: You throw in some dinosaurs, a pack of hungry wolves, some battle scenes, a game of chess, a clay pot, a trip through hell, some fabulous CGI, and an amazing cast of actors!

I personally thought part 1 (Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds) was a better movie overall, but there are many who disagree. Regardless, both movies were very well done and deserve to be seen by those who occasionally enjoy a bit of the fantasy genre. I'd hope they would continue with the plans to make a part 3 and 4, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen, sadly.

Are you still reading? Why?? Go watch!!!

A Good Movie But An Inferior Sequel

We start off with the end of the first movie, This movie heavily relies on the backstories of the three main guardians while Don Lee's character is served to be the movie's emotional narrator of the backstories. The backstories was really well done and the lore was not confusing especially with the big plot twist at the end. I do have to agree to someone that the pacing and sudden jump cuts from serious emotional backstories to CGI dinosaurs was quite jarring and cohesive, even though it was fun to see Ha Jung Woo fighting dinosaurs I wanted the transition between the effusive moments to the more comical moments be more well done. Ha Jung Woo's character's past was the best out of the three, betraying his adopted brother which turned out to be Ju Ji Hoon's character and Ju Ji Hoon's past turning out to be so well thought out and a tear jerker. Ju Ji Hoon and Kim Hyang Gi obviously stole the spotlight with every scene they in, Ju Ji Hoon's comical performance with Kim Hyang Gi's more wholesome yet emotional performance makes the movie more entertaining and heartfelt. Along With The Gods: The Last 49 Days succeeds bringing the characters more depth but it suffers from unusual pacing, and transitions.

Great twists and turns! Better than the prequel!

I just watched it because I thought this will just be like the 1st movie, but hey I was wrong! Good thing I watched it even if it is kinda late now!

At first I thought the prequel is better but as the story goes I find it way way better than the prequel.

The story, the twists and turns are all good and well written. Kudos to the writer, director, casta and the team. This movie made me laugh, cry and I'm touched by how it ended.

They didn’t focus on the trial process compared to the prequel. This time we've seen a lot more about the Guardians' past and it all make sense at the end. Try watching it!

I'm now looking forward as to how they will show us the 3rd movie! Worth watching!

Guardians, Old Souls, & Outlaw Gods °6.7° °good f/u to AwtG2W°

Rated 85 on AWiki, AwtG49 is a 2018, 141-minute continuation of Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds. It picks up right where the first left off.

As the flick starts out, we learn that one of the Guardians has to go on trial for crimes that he committed while protecting our protagonist in the first film. (Who knew the Afterlife was so litigious? It's Hell, indeed). The other reapers are tasked with collecting a soul that's been protected well past his death date by an outlaw god, Sung Joo Shin (played by the adorable Ma Dong-Seok). God-Sung won't let the old man die before his orphan grandson graduates from school. Speaking of orphans, Korean features aren't kind to them and this trend continues here, sadly.

AwtG2W follows Kim Ja-Hong, a fireman who dies in the line of duty. When he reaches the Gate of the Afterlife, where he can be reincarnated after completing seven trials: betrayal, violence, filial piety, murder, indolence, deceit, and injustice.

Much of the cast here is the same as AwtG2W. Why mess with excellence? Cha Tae-Hyun (Narco-Saints, Assassination,1987: When the Day Comes) is the lead, Kim Ja-Hong. Cha Tae Hyun (Team Bulldog: Off-duty Investigation, Moving) portrays Kim Ja Hong. The dolorous Ju Ji Hoon (Kingdom-8.3, Blood Free-8.5, Team Bulldog: Off-duty Investigation) is Hae Won Maek. Kim Hyang Gi (Innocent Witness, Salon De Nabi) plays Duk Choon, and the wonderful Ma Dong Seok (The Bros-7.4, Train to Busan-7.8, The Roundup, Bad Guys) plays outlaw deity Sung Joo Shin. Lee Jung Jae, the lead of Squid Game, portrays King Yum Ra God of Death. The screenwriter/director is Kim Yong Hwa (200 Pounds Beauty-6.5, The Moon).

AwtG49 is, all-around, more of the same. Same strengths, same weaknesses. Its biggest deductions come from a failure to fully explore its potential emotional range. The fighting is excellent with a particularly grand battle scene. The cinematography is beautiful. It's a great movie-night-movie.

If you enjoy fantasy, even though China is often guilty of sub-standard special effects, they still put out the best stuff in the world. Anyone who enjoys the AwtG films should like Douluo Continent-9.4 and Handsome Siblings-8.7 even more.

Just like the first installment, this movie will not disappoint you at all. It has a soulful history. Each of their stories is blended with morals and sadness that will capture your spirit of empathy. The tales about wars, repentance, and forgiveness were perfectly combined in a setting of fantasy, but the emotions are conveyed to the audience perfectly.

Hands up to the cast. They are flawlessly skilled in their own craft. They manage again to portray their characters. The visuals have been just as great as the first movie, obviously, the production is at a high level along with the customs and sceneries.

There is no boredom moment while watching this movie, you must definitely watch it.

Independently awesome movie but not as much as emotional like the first one

This is a much needed sequel of Along With The Gods. It didn't disappoint at all because it gave me goosebumps while the story unfolds. A lot of questions from the first movie has been answered.

The storyline is also independent from the first one. It's good to know what happened on the first movie to know how it's connected but if you want to watch this second movie only, the story still makes sense. The computer graphics are still outstanding and impressive as expected.

Ma DongSeok is a really great addition to this sequel. We also get discover the back story of the three guardians who's trying their best to reincarnate 49 souls. Their chemistry is really great even though the characters are completely different from one another.

For those who have watched the first one, this movie is really a good follow up to know more about the guardians. For those who haven't watched the first one, you can watch the first one to have greater understanding or you can also dive right away into this one. This is a real good family movie that's very touching and many life lessons to pick up.
