It’s really hard to move on

It’s been months since the drama ended but i’m still here reading people’s comments on how great this masterpiece was. Like many of you, The Untamed has set such a high standard of what to look for and expect from a drama that I find it so difficult to start a new one.
I actually got to know The Untamed after it finished airing when I accidentally saw a video of Xiao Zhan smiling in a concert. His smile was so captivating that I had to search everything about him and it brought me to this wonderful drama. Reading the original book and watching the drama at the same time did help me understand the storyline more and I was so amazed of how they managed to keep the drama closest to the material source. The perfect combination of great acting, strong chemistry of the main leads Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo with stunning music kept me on a roller coaster of emotions through 50 episodes without realizing it. The message underneath of moral values, friendships, family and love was really worth contemplating.
I couldn’t count how many times I have rewatched this to be honest. Give it a try and you’ll love it!

I took the risk in watching this series with 50 episodes and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. This series is a saga about the different cultivators, power rivalry, friendship and most importantly the unspoken love between the two main characters. Acting, cinematography and costume are excellent. Although the BL part was censored, the eye contacts and the smiles said much more that the normal exchange of ' i love you' and kisses.

I was watching several other series before I started The Untamed. But right after the first few episodes, I was drawn to this that I decided to temporarily stop watching the others. This series made me laugh, angry, be thankful, excited, cry, and fall in love with the characters.

It's never too late to be a part of the world of Lan Zhan and Wei Ying.

"the feeling of walking a single plank bridge until dark is truly not so bad"

Where do I even begin with this amazing piece of entertainment? Never have I have felt so much for fiction characters in my life and trust me when I say I have loved a lot of 2D people.

First, I will start with the cons. The only reason I did not rate it a 10 is because of some of the acting and technical choices the editors made. The acting in this I would say is 90% good. However, the first few episodes were pretty rocky. I felt like a lot was exaggerated, but I do have to say the actors definitely grew into their roles. Secondly, the coloration of the drama is quite weird in the beginning and made people look washed out and grey. I'm not 100% sure if it was the filter they use or if that was the makeup department's fault.

The most gripping part of this entire world is the story and how the characters grow throughout the story. One of the main themes of the novel was the question: what defines good and evil? Throughout the show, you can see that the directors and scriptwriters were very aware of this. The entire story of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji was crafted around this. Lan Wangji's character shift is the very essence of this theme. The author definitely wanted people to know that morality cannot be defined as just good and evil and the judgment of one's character should not solely be based on hearsay and rumors.

Wei Wuxian (WWX) is a complicated character and one that I love deeply. The only way to describe him is just a beacon of light that shines infinitely despite everything life has thrown his way. He has such a strong personality and he is defined by living by his principles until the day he dies, regardless if others criticize and demonize him. He goes beyond for the people he loves and fights for justice blindly. No amount of the words that I say will do justice to how great of a person he is. That being said, a perfect character is nothing without his flaws and boy, does he have a lot. He can be arrogant, too outspoken, and a bit of a show off. I also will admit that he did cause a lot of death because of his journey to protect those who couldn't protect themselves, but what's a good character if they can't grow from their mistakes? For this role, there was truly no one that could do him justice like Xiao Zhan did. Hell, he wrote an essay talking about why he loved Wei Wuxian and how he resonated with his characters. The smile and the aura Xiao Zhan has in the entire drama is so WWX-like, but most importantly, he expresses the pain that WWX goes through and tries to suppress so well. You feel for him deeper and you fall for the character harder. He basically bought the character to life is what I'm trying to say.

I absolutely adore Lan Wangji (LWJ) and I also connected with his character a lot. On the surface, he looks like a cold person who has no care in the world for things that do not concern him, however, as the show progresses, you see how he is valiant and has the same moral compass that WWX has. What is so great about LWJ is that despite his cold exterior, beneath is someone who loves deeply, passionately and emotionally. Ever since he was a child, he was taught thousands of rules of how to act and one of them was to never show excess emotions. For a person that feels so much, that must have killed him on the inside. He is also a man of few words, but it's his actions and loyalty that define his character. After WWX goes down the demonic path, he spent so many months trying to coax away. Not out of punishment, but out of care. He was aware that demonic cultivation always lead to painful ends and he was right which ultimately led to 16 years of yearning and regret. Again, casting killed it with Wang Yibo. I remember an interview with the director who said she originally passed on Yibo twice before meeting him in person. She said that as soon as she saw him, she knew there was no one better for the role and I could not agree more. Yibo's aura really matched LWJ despite him being a bit different. Because LWJ has so few words, the acting was all in the face and eyes and Yibo did it wonderfully. You can see the change in LWJ between the span of 16 years and that's all on how Yibo portrayed him.

You can't talk about The Untamed and MDZS without talking about Wangxian (LWJ + WWX). Even though the couple was heavily censored by China, you can still feel the love and gratitude both feel for each other. It is a beautiful story where both will eventually find their way to each other again. LWJ is one of the only people in WWX's life that has trusted him and stayed by his side throughout everything, through when people loved him and when people feared him. WWX also brought light into LWJ's dim world by showing him that life was meant to be lived with a smile no matter how dark it can be. They deserve each other truly, especially WWX because LWJ is his happy ending. He has gone through so much for his family, for people that were discriminated against for something they couldn’t control, for justice all while being a teenager. He deserves to live for himself for once and for all. Despite having lost so much, at least LWJ will always be by his side. The show said it best: having that one person that trusts you wholeheartedly is enough to live.

I have a lot more to say about all the characters (especially about Jiang Cheng), but it's too much to write. Please watch this drama and read the novel because it is truly amazing and provides a lot of life lessons on morality and judgment. Plus, I am sure you will fall in love with both the characters and the story. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from WWX himself. "Let the self judge the right and the wrongs, let others decide to praise or to blame and let the losses and gains remain uncommented on."

The storyline of the Untamed is unforgettable in so many aspects. It addresses the cruelty and hypocrisy of humanity and the desire to find a scapegoat to fuel agendas. And the idea of how intimidating it can be for those in power to be unable to control the untameable. Most importantly, the series displays the immeasurable courage and sacrifice a person can possess to stand up for what is right despite having the entire world against you as well as how far one can go with undying love and support backing you up . It's one of the most beautiful and heart wrenching series I've ever set my eyes upon and it helped restore some of my faith in humanity.

ONE OF THE BEST HISTORICAL DRAMAS

First let me start off that this drama is absolutely amazing and no I am not exaggerating I have never ever watched a drama that made me feel happy, sad, excited, and angry at the same time until I watched this not only that but the men in this drama are FINEEE The music was so good throughout the show as well.I watched this drama about a year ago and I still listen to the soundtrack to this DAY! The acting was amazing and I think everyone properly fit their specified character and xiao zhan (wei wuxian) his facial expressions throughout the whole drama were top tier.Just letting you know if you never watched chinese dramas before I HIGHLY recommend this one especially if you like to look at fine men.If you are worried about the show being too long because of the "50" episodes don't worry because I was intimidated at first too but then I finished it and even watched it again! The drama is good enough for you to want to keep watching it over and over and even get you exicted to watch it. Also if you want to know where to watch it just watch it on netflix or youtube

There is very few tv shows in this world I have ever watched that makes me so reluctant for them to end. Maybe 4 other shows and I watch a lot of shows both Asian dramas and american / Canadian and British TV alike.
This show has become so close to my heart its been such a emotional ride and I feel genuinely sad its coming to an end soon (Im half way through episode 43 very close to finishing it)

The male leads are absolutely wonderful their acting is amazing.
I never seen the animation or read this before. So the drama is my only experience with these characters and this world.
A drama like this is a kind of rare treat you find once in a blue moon. A special gem.
I already have started looking for the next drama to watch because I know this will give me PDD after really badly.

The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and gorgeous.
The acting is just spectacular im very impressed with how Wang Yi Bo can show so much emotion through micro expressions and his eyes. Thats some real talent there.
The story and their acting is so captivating and just sucks you right in. You go to another world watching this drama.
I have to say its the best Cdrama I've ever watched. Its been such an emotional roller coaster and theres by far more than one character I wish I could punch through my screen. But overall its been amazing to watch this journey unfold before me to watch these characters be brought to life by the breath taking acting and music and story telling.

If you are looking for a nice drama to sit down and binge I'd highly recommend the untamed its an absolute masterpiece. Its art pure beautiful art and I feel honoured to have been able to witness and enjoy it.

Update: I finally finished it after taking a break not wanting it to end. I need more. I really need more im so sad its ended.

A show that made me smile yet cry badly

Although I was left confused and thinking how fake the CGI effects were after Ep 1-2, I pressed on as I was spooked by some scenes and so I wanted to know what happened (confusing and mysterious start).

As the story of what happened 16 years ago slowly unfolds, it got much better and I ignored my initial thought about this drama. The first few eps introduced me to a happy-go-lucky character named Wei Ying, who is utterly cute and mischievous yet smart. He is so adorable he makes me smile whenever I see him (and him messing with/ irritating Lan Zhan hahaha). ^^ Also, the various "sets" of the different clans are really pretty, especially Cloud Recesses and Lotus Pier.

I am glad I continued the drama as I ended up falling in love with it. Although slow at parts and some parts are actually unnecessarily long, the various tragedies that followed tugged on my heartstrings so badly that I cried so much throughout the entire show...

Not gonna say much about the story but what I can say is after my first watch, I immediately watched it again. My heart ached (and eyes swollen lol) for Wei Ying on my first watch, and it ached Wei Ying + Lan Zhan on my 2nd watch. I managed to understand Lan Zhan's character and small emotions better after my 2nd watch, and hence my heart cried for him too.

It's painful to watch someone choose to leave the world feeling desolate and disappointed. It is also painful to watch someone who is willing to wait for what seems like an eternity for someone he doesn't believe is already gone.

Oh and the OST is also good in my opinion! The lyrics of Wei Ying, Lan Zhan and Jiang Yanli's character songs made me feel so sad... (T^T)

Putting aside the sometimes cheap-looking CGI effects and some draggy scenes, I really love this show! In fact, I am on my 4th watch now hahaha. ?

They were in love

It's a great show and the casts were perfect. The show was so good, but because of bl censorship in China, some of the scenes were taken out. The show was amazing and the music and detail were just the cherries on top. I wish there was more to watch. The relationship between Lan Zhan and Wei Ying is so adorable and special. The characters really shined, and the chemistry between everyone was so amazing. There were plot twists you didn't see, and characters you thought were good, but were evil, and so much more! and There are a lot of things that come together once you piece the puzzles. It was a great show, and I definitely recommend it!!

Actors were so well chosen for the characters. Story was absolutely great.

I loved the story, I loved the characters and I just loved the overall series. This is one of those rare series/movies where it seems like the actors were made to play their parts. Wei Wu Xian and Lan Wang Ji were such beautiful souls in such different ways. The way their relationship was portrayed in the series was perfect. Not only were these two characters wonderful, the other characters like the sister, the child and so many supporting characters that just made you care for them, love them and feel for them - I think this is one of the most important elements in a good series.
So many scenes made me cry, made me laugh, made me go 'awww'. The story, the pace, the setting, the characters, everything, made this drama what it was. This is definitely one of my top dramas. I would absolutely recommend this.
There was a flaw in my opinion though. There was one scene that made me cringe because it felt forced and lame, it lasted only a few seconds but I remember it quite well. It would be interesting to know if anyone felt the same way about it or even know which scene I'm talking about haha.
Overall, one of my top picks.

FYI, I don't like 10 ratings and I think MyDramaList ratings are generally too high. So on MyDramaList I rate them relative to other dramas and which ones I would expect to see in the top rated selection.

Well developed likable characters and captivating plot

This drama is probably my all time favorite and was one of the few I've actually watched all the way to the end. It had an all around interesting plot line and a surprisingly well done representation of the main pairing despite china's censorship laws.

One of its main draws is from the lead pair and the immediate chemistry between the two, with the actors doing a wonderful job to portray the free spirited Wei Wuxian, and the stoic yet morally righteous Lan Wangji. Even though their romance can not be acknowledged out right, the drama still easily showcases the soulmate level connection and partnership between the two.

My biggest complaint against dramas are their tendency to create a romantic pair where the female lead is often a damsel in distress. Even dramas with advertised strong independent woman often have the woman easily swayed by the opinions of their dashing male love interest. While Wei Wuxian certainly had some damsel moments he was also a powerhouse in his own right who saved Lan Wangji just as much as the other rescued him. Additionally the two were easily capable f disagreeing with each other stubborn enough to not immediately pander to the other's ways. This drama even managed to enhance the role of female characters by giving characters like Wen Qing a bigger role than she had in the novel which helped to establish her as a powerful female character who was more than just a potential love interest.

The storyline itself was definitely interesting with enough twists and conflict to create a captivating and immensely satisfying story. I will recognize there were some flaws in the story telling, as I felt that the beginning itself was a little dry and drawn out, and spent almost too much time on side plots when we had barely even got into the main story. Once you get into the meat of the story, though, it is easy to get sucked in and the storylines are impressively developed.

The other thing from this drama that really caught my attention was the well developed side characters that came along with it. Even with the focus heavily on the leads the supporting cast were well developed and all had somewhat of a role in the story that had some measure of impact. They had understandable motivations and fears, and even villainous characters were well fleshed out earning some measure of sympathy from the audience. On that note I also thought the acting for the villains was especially well done which was crucial because what use is a hero without a good villain?

The music for this drama was beautiful and while the cgi sometimes came off as tacky and overly dramatic it was not to the point where I was completely distracted from the major plot line. Overall an amazing drama that is definitely worth a watch.

AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE

This is the only drama I've rewatched several times. Although it's censored, you can see the love between the 2 main characters. It's all in the tiny details. Wei ying is a character that is often misinterpreted, he goes to the very depths of hell to protect his loved ones from harm, especially his brother. Lan zhan tends to hide his feelings but his feelings for wei ying can be seen so clearly. He would do anything to protect his soulmate (breaking the 3000 rules of Gusu).
Seeing the chemistry between these two had me crying at 2 am every day. Additionally Wen Ning is the cutest little ball of fluff I've ever seen, he follows his master everywhere, and occasionally 3rd wheels wangxian
