A Genuine Masterpiece

This such a beautiful drama. I can't begin to express how much I fell in love with Untamed and all it's characters along the way. Everything about this is wonderful. The cast and crew did an absolutely phenomenal job. The acting is on point. The sets and costumes are beautiful and super detailed. And the OST is breathtaking.

If you're hesitating to watch this because of the long length, the story carries itself easily. The plot is engaging and keeps you on your toes. I love the gradual reveal of the storyline. It has so much emotional impact. My heart broke over and over for Wei Ying. There was not a moment I was not completely absorbed.

If you're wary because of the lack of BL, don't give it a second thought. I initially put this drama off in part because of the chinese censorship, but Xiao Zhan and Wang Yi Bo embraced their characters and grabbed tight hold of subtle cues. I interpreted Wei Ying's and Lan Zhan's relationship as something past bromance, and the actors did a great job giving the viewers a soulmate impression. They're an absolute joy to watch together.

All the actors did justice to their roles and really brought the story of Untamed alive. Everything down to the minute details in this were perfect. I really can't say enough good things about it. Don't hesitate to watch this treasure.

The Best thing to Ever Exist!

If there was one drama that deserves a 10/10 in history (and possibly forever) this is it!
This drama truly has become a part of me now and will forever be <3 I have never gotten attached to any drama/movie! but this drama and Xiao Zhang took my heart away. I did not skip one scene ..not even the beginning theme <3 and never have I wanted a 50 Ep drama to be longer.. never ending to be precise :) <3
I will just never move on from The Untamed/mdzs and can't put into words how I feel about this drama, the love story, the sibling bonds, how LZ acted with his eyes and cut deep through our souls and how beautiful and BREATHTAKING my Wei Ying was ...

This indescribable Gem is full of life lessons and is far more than just a drama! It full of life lessons, life-changing quotes and leaves you to think deeply and reflect on yourself and the world around you. The Untamed truly changed my life for the better like nothing/ no one else ever has! Wei Ying became my role model and hero in every way and I learnt patience from Lan Zhan. Before getting to know Wei Ying, I did not consider myself as "patient" and I deeply cared about my image and what others thought about me. However, through this journey I went on with The Untamed, I was able to become a better version of myself :) I became one of the most patient people and did not even give a x what others thought of me which was unbelievable xD. And as I went through this Journey I realized why Wei Ying was able to transform Lan Zhan too...
It is very hard to put into words how much The Untamed/mdzs, Wei Wuxian, and Wangxian mean to me.
Thank you thank you for this Gem ??

Awesome story, but sometimes show is too draggy..

Compared to the novel, this story line is more wholesome in a sense that expands on a lot of the side characters whereas the novel is concentrated on two main leads. Especially liked the extra scenes for Wen Qing and Yan Li definitely a bonus.

Acting is pretty on paint for most of the cast, Xiao Zhan pulled off Wei Wu Xian well with such a bright and mouthy character. Wang Yi Bo didn't have many lines as Lan Zhan but acting managed to relay the important emotions.
Rest of cast is good too.

Production and costuming for the drama is really beautiful, lots of aerial shots of mountains and waterfall.

Music for the show grows on you over time, good chinese style music.

Drawback : the production spent too much time on scenes with too many staring and pauses. Felt quite lazy and fighting scenes is minimal compared to novel.

Also, for those new to Xianxia type story, it was very hard to understand the cultivation worlds rules and settings. I think the show doesn't really explain too well on the types of ghouls, spirits and other netherworldly incidents, it leaves the newly initiated with a lot of questions on why cultivators do what they did. Reading the novel aided me in that.

Overall, I enjoyed the drama most of the time (minus the long draggy conversation scenes)

I truly love this drama & didn't want it to need. This was probably one of the best Chinese drama of 2019 with such a great story line, I've seen so far. BL or Bromance you choose it for yourself?
Based on a BL xianxia novel Mo Dao Zu Shi by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, starring Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo.
They fit the role perfectly and the chemistry is as dynamic as the story line in the novel.

But surely you'll never gonna be disappointed. Wei Wu Xian and Lan Zhan are Yin / Yang due who complement each other in every possible way.

The fondness and bound these two mean characters form along the way in this drama is so elegant and eternal. It's a story about friendship, brotherhood, adventure, thrill, Struggle & so much more.
But mostly about seeing things for what they truly are in the end and how it's pretty hard to distinguish right from wrong? or black or white? when you judge things so singularly .

Every character here is worth admiring and also the inner back story's are as critical for the viewers.
Thank god !!! NO cliffhangers otherwise I'd just die for curiosity.
Not to mention the cast and crew were well put together.
This fantasy world they created is much beautiful that you don't mind getting lost in it. BUT I WANT MORE o(╥_╥)o

This series is literally a master piece!!!

Where should I start, from the amazing acting done by the cast to the fantastic story line and beautiful music. I started watching The Untamed in 2019 and put it on hold for a while because I was so busy I just didn't have the time. I finally finished it in 2020, I then proceeded to watch the animated series and then The Untamed spin-offs; all of which were beautifully written and executed. Not only does this series make you feel their pain and anguish it also makes you understand them; where they are coming from, why they do the things they do, how they got to were they are. You are left wondering how anything plays out in the ending. The ending of the final episode is also so well done that you just know that they will cross paths many times over. They built great friendships and did what was best for everyone. I love Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji but Nie Huaisang is actually my favorite character. His personality leads everyone to believe he is this naive and innocent person and for the most part he really is innocent but he is so intelligent and cunning in a good way. How he did some things is still a mystery but I don't really need all the details to know he is a true hero just like Wei Ying, Lan Zhan and Wen Ning. The story line keeps you hooked and it definitely a binge worthy series if you have the time to watch all 50 episodes. I know this review is kinda all over the place but I just don't know how to explain just how good this series is to watch. Some parts are funny, some are sad and some will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. I don't know if it's just me but I think if you watch enough dramas you can find little clues here and there to decipher who is a bad guy in disguise. After watching some episodes I started to get the feeling that Jin Guangyao was not a good guy but I didn't know to what extent until I watched the whole thing. His character sure is something though and I kinda can sympathize with his character but I think in the end he let his insecurities take over and control his actions. All in all this series along with its spin-offs are a must watch!

One of the best drama all universe all time masterpiece

Once you´re at the end, you´re at the beginning.

Thanks to the Novel, "Mo Dao Zu Shi" by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, this masterpiece was produced and released early enough to cure depression. Due to the 50 Episodes, it might seem like a long way to go but don´t be hasty with your judgement because your decision to not watch it, will leave an invisible scar in your creative mind. Not only are the actors superb - I am not only talking about the main cast here - and reliable in their execution of every scene, but also the plot is unique and will keep you wanting for more.

Initially, I wasn´t that excited to watch this series and spend 2.250 minutes in total watching it. If back then I only knew how wrong I was. Presently, I think I spend even more time being obsessed with it. Once you´re at the end, you´re at the beginning.

Starting off with the novel has about 130 chapters and thematizes the origin and the hardship of the "friendship" between Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian, which was implemented so well in the filming. (Once you read the novel, you get what I mean) While the original web novel depicted an explicit romance between the two main male characters, the adaptation was censored with homoerotic subtexts instead due to China's ban on LGBT portrayals in films. Nevertheless, it was portrayed well enough to not be disappointing, since the actors put a lot of effort to show their feelings without the need for physical touch.

Besides the tragic main plot of Wei Wuxian’s search for himself and the sacrifices he has to make, there are also side stories that make the Drama definitely worth watching. Especially the tragedy of Yi City. You just have to watch it.

The most interesting gift that this series gives you tho, is the ability to see through a monotone facade of "... is evil" or "... is good". I would say it is a life-changing and instructive drama than most of the dramas I saw. It will give you insights into the life of a wrongly accused soul, fighting their way to survive the hell of prejudices/being a villain. On the other hand, we have a killer, whose murder impulse got triggered by the unloving and mean environment.

A MASTERPIECE>>> LEGEND OF THE CENTURY

Let's keep it short. Let's start with the actors.
Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo as the main leads are too good and deserve the praises. The rest of the actors including the supporting and guests roles are also good. The plot is pretty surprising for me. Some of the people you expect to know nothing and act so innocent are actually the bad guys and will stab you in the back for power. I haven't read the novel but they all say that it was suppose to be a BL but what can we expect from Chinese dramas is that they censor all the BL scenes like what it should be in the novel. The music is also good the theme song is actually my fav song out of all the historical/fantasy dramas I have watched. I wouldn't recommend watching if this is your first time watching a historical/fantasy drama maybe watch something else like simples dramas I'm gonna recommend one that Xiao Zhan was on it's the Oh my Emperor! and its second season. Then maybe you can watch The Untamed. But if you want to be disappointed read the novel first so you know how different it is from the drama. Enjoy!

I'M IN LOVE!!

At first, I was hesitated to watch. I knew that the series was adapted from a danmei novel but was censored. What would the series be without lovey dovey scene?? After watching a couple of short clips on youtube, I decided to go with it anyway. I'm so glad that I did.

What I love about the series:
Acting: A round of applause for Yibo and Xiao Zhan who were quite young when they filmed this series.
I always have a soft spot for Xiao Zhan who always brings out different vibes for any character he played. Yibo is also awesome as Wangji.

The chemistry: Due to censor, the series leaves out all BL scenes. But I can clearly see how much love and chemistry there is between the two main characters. They don't need to hug, kiss or to have any romantic scene. They deeply care for each other, all expressed via action. I love everytime Wangji says "Wei Ying" and Wu Xian says "Lan Zhan". If you love the series as much as me, please also read the manhua which explains more on how they fall in love with each other.

The side characters: The story of Yi City deserves its own spin-off series/movie. Xiao Xingchen, Xue Yang and Ah Qing almost makes me cry. I feel for Xue Yang when he cannot change.

What I don't like about the series: There are some plot holes with the storyline. I'm not that convinced with the ending. For instance, the one who masterminds the plan to bring Wu Xian back - it feels very random and doesn't fit that one's characteristic. Guangyao's character is confusing too (is he good, is he bad?).

Overall, it's a great series - one of the best I watched so far (Chinese TV series category). I'm excited to see more projects from Yibo and Xiao Zhan :D

I don’t normally write a review about shows, but for this one I have to. I love this show, it shows great family values and Friendship. But what I don’t like is that they only focus on Wei wuxian, I thought the special episodes was going to be about Lan Zhan Aka wanji

I was looking forward to what happened to Lan Zhan doing those 16 years, did he Mourn his friend’s death I know we only heard about he being punished but I wanted to see the whole story and how it came about. His side of the story would be very interesting and important.
Ps I also hated that they never really expressed their feelings. Even if they didn’t have the kissing part, they should just express their actual feelings to one another.
But over all great storyline and happy with the cast performance.

Unforgettable Journey ?

This show completely captivated me from start to finish. I mean, 50 episodes in just 4 days??
It's safe to say it became a part of my daily routine, and I never once got bored or lost interest. It absolutely deserves all the praise it gets?

Sure, I was a bit confused by all the names and clan references at first, like with any Wuxia drama? But once they delved into the flashbacks, everything clicked into place, and I was hooked.

The plot was just... wow. I can't even find the right words to describe how much I enjoyed every second of it?
The cinematography, the epic battles, the gorgeous costumes – it was all top-notch. And the characters? Don't even get me started. I felt like I knew each and every one of them personally, thanks to the incredibly detailed storytelling.

And let's talk about the actors – every single one of them delivered outstanding performances that added so much depth to the story. From the seasoned veterans to the newcomers like Sizhui and Jin Ling, each one of them found a special place in my heart❤️

But all good things must come to an end, and sadly, The Untamed is no exception. I'll definitely miss Lan Zhan's stoic demeanor and Wei Wuxian's mischievousness. But hey, at least there's a Special Edition to look forward to!?

Speaking of the end, I can't help but wish for a bit more closure. Like seeing Jiang Cheng and Wuxian finally making up, or Wei Wuxian taking on the role of the uncle. It would've been nice to see those loose ends tied up.

Oh, and can we talk about the flute music? I've always been obsessed with it in Wuxia dramas, but "Wuji" took it to a whole new level✨That tune is permanently stuck in my head now, and honestly, I'm not complaining?

In short, The Untamed was an unforgettable journey that I'll cherish for a long time, and I'm so grateful to have experienced it?

5th rewatch and I'm still here

Wei Wuxian's story deeply touched me. I really could feel his sacrifices, his love for the people around him, his regrets and remorse... When his sister died, I cried a lot. He blamed himself so much to the point he could see nothing but red. Also the leads relationship is just unforgettable, I love WangXian so much!! The way Lan Wangji went from a stoic, young boy who is unable to express his love for his Wei Ying and just wants him to stay by his side and on the "right" path to a grown, mature man who lived by his dead love's memory -- to always be there where the chaos is, and also became someone to stand by Wei Ying, making up all the regrets he had during Wei Ying's past life. The casting for this drama is also perfect and the acting also delivered. (Can I also just say Xiao Zhan is so handsome?!?!?!)

Although there are flaws both in the storytelling and directing, the way the story was delivered overshadowed these flaws. This drama is one of a kind and I will hold this close to my heart forever.

I wasn’t going to write this review. I watched the drama months ago, after having watched the MDZS donghua last year, I’m elbows deep drowning in MDZS content. So I thought “who needs another Untamed/CQL review? especially from someone who has Wei Wuxian as an icon atm?”. This review might be, at this point, very late.

However, when you continue watching content and you find yourself comparing most media you come across to this one, you start to think you have to put out there how good it is. It deserves at least that time of my day. And, also, I think Xiao Zhan right now needs all the praise he can get, because he also deserves it.

Even having seen other versions, I still fell in love with this story all over again with the drama. I feel like each adaptation of this work has its own identity, in a way, that derives of several things, like what the medium itself can offer, who portrays the characters, what the adaptation is allowed to showcase due to censorship, etc.

The drama version is, possibly, the furthest from the source material in various instances, but I feel that only adds to the fun of hearing the story all over again. Because this is, I assure you, a story worth hearing several times, not only because it’s very good but also because there are a lot of characters, time frames, mysteries and elements at play, all handled beautifully in the drama.

You can’t make a version of Mo Dao Zu Shi without two good leads that have chemistry. In the case of the drama, it was even more important, because some of the things other adaptations can show, in different degrees of explicitness, the drama cannot. So it falls on the directing and on the acting to convey the relationship that is the foundation of the story, with whichever elements they’ve got. And Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo are just perfect in the roles. They understand the characters, the relationship and the story, and it shows.

The entire cast is like hand-picked to perfection. Even if some characters have variations with other versions in terms of characterization, they all do such a great ensemble job that it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the roles they’ve got. Marius Wang deserves all my praise, because Jiang Cheng is such a complex character to portray, and he does it amazingly, his emotional scenes annihilated me.

This drama is a different version of the source material yet it has in it the essence and foundation of it and works with amazing scenery, incredible production design and the music, which is such an important part of MDZS in every version, is sublime.

If you’ve never watched a xianxia series before, don’t fret, I think this drama is a good first dive to it, especially because there’s so much more material to get into if there’s something you can’t quite grasp.

If you’re looking for lgbtq+ content, this particular version might be the less explicit but it’s incredibly emotional and has the positive vibe the subject matter deserves while having the relationship involved in a fantastic plot, with political turmoil, assassinations, mystery, action, amazing female characters (with more to do than in other versions of the story, congrats CQL for doing that) and an amazing cast.

Just watch it, basically, is what I’m saying. If historical fantasy and good lgbtq+ content is in your radar, give this a go.
