Both series revolves around a survival game, to which the final victor will be given to have one wish granted. In both cases, whatever happens during the game will affect the real world. In both series, players that ended up being killed during the game will disappear in the real world, but in Geats case, it was less harsh as players who were disqualified from the game end up only retired and returned to their normal lives.
Arisu Ryohei—a listless, jobless and video-game-obsessed young man—suddenly finds himself in a strange, emptied-out version of Tokyo in which he and his friends must compete in dangerous games in order to survive. In this strange world, Arisu meets Usagi, a young woman who’s navigating the games alone. After a dangerous game which tests Arisu’s limits, the two set out together to unravel one mystery after another as they risk their lives and confront what it means to live. You must fight if you want to survive.
Both shows focus on a group of characters given special items (a deck of cards and a VR headset, respectively) by a game master, who is prodding them to kill everyone else to receive a reward. With a lead character whose conscience is too strong to kill anyone.
Alternate worlds are present in both premises. Versus Road having VR and Ryuki having a world on the other side of the mirror, with both of them being the setting for (most of) the fights.
