A tear-stained, blood-splattered odyssey
An odd mix of hardcore visceral action and contemplative sentiment, Night in Paradise suffers from being an overly long plod in need of some major narrative tightening and its occasional blasts of directorial panache that are ultimately squashed by its uncompromising fatalism. Melding the gangland revenge thriller and the terminal illness romance, there's real inventiveness to the way director Park Hoon-Jung wrong-foots the viewer and handles the operatic displays of gunfire and death, unfortunately, the connective tissue that the film only pretends to be interested in and beyond basic action sequences renders it rather dull. The production values are the best things the film has going for it, the photography is frequently fantastic and the music does a decent job of matching the dark tone the film carries with some decent acting all around to boot. Unfortunately, there's a serious lack of personality permeating throughout Night in Paradise, one that sometimes plays like a road trip, sometimes like a romance and sometimes like the idle imaginings of a serial killer. A tear-stained, blood-splattered odyssey in whether revenge is warranted or even capable of bringing personal satisfaction that could have been so much better. Was this review helpful to you?

Totally Recommend
I watched this movie because I saw it in the ‘coming soon’ section in Netflix about a week prior to release. I fell in love with this movie...and Um Tae Goo (recommend watching Save Me 2!!) Even when things seemed to not go the way viewers wanted, the plot switched and made us have a satisfying ending........................... ........................ ........................ ........................ ........................ ..filling up the 500 character minimum limit ........................ ........................ ........................ ........................ ........................ ........................... ........................ ........................ ........................ ........................Was this review helpful to you?
It moved you in a melancholy way.
The movie on the whole had bits that were predictable but it still had that element of suspense especially the ending. The way the movie has captured Jeju island is what made the movie a beautiful piece because you could see the sadness hanging in every corner of the island. The story between Ja-Yeon and Tae-goo was a memorable one, a gangster movie could not feel this edgy and aesthetic. It was somewhat smooth and grotesque at the same time, the language and graphic scenes of murder weren't off-putting rather they aided the emotion of the storyline. The rain and the silences were the most perfect thing for me in the film, even more than the dialogues. Tae-goo took our sympathy, empathy and respect even if he was a gangster; like there was something pure in his gruesome. Director Ma, though one of the antagonists was nothing but agreeable and man if Yang wasn't the epitome of scumbag. However, the gangs and betrayal plot might be cliche but the take from Tae-goo and Ja-Yeon's life made it unique and heart-gripping. It was like the music and the cinematography were in perfect sync. It was a piece of melancholy beauty for me.Was this review helpful to you?
Dark Film Noir That Breaks Your Heart
Explosively poetic! Reminds you of a Tarantino show. Love the emotions on display and the visuals are just stunning (no not talking about the looks of the main leads. Jeju is perfect for the sombre melancholic mood and very complementary to the story! On that note kudos to the cinematographer as well as the fight/shooting choreographer. While some scenes may look like a straightforward copy of some of Hollywood's melancholic and film fest worthy shows, this show held their own, just like the leads.
Their quiet and restrained show of emotions was just perfectly nuanced that viewers became so invested and can literally feel the lead's anguish in the last scene. Brilliant job and chemistry.
A must see!

Good Plotting but lacks a bite !!
I would say “Night in Paradise” is quite de misleading title 4 dis film...Wid its Jeju location & an intriguing female & male protagonist, this film adds new dimensions 2 de storied tradition of K-gangster films. 4 all de talking of this film, der isn't a single original line of dialogue. Or a unique mob character. Or a new way of doing a bloody hit scene. In some sense, I can understand this movie as a return 2 roots & a celebration of noir basics. But 2 many influences seem 2 b fighting 4 de same space these days. De 140-minrunning time isn't earned, wid de “slow-burning” atmospherics largely featuring de mourning man & orphaned girl who meet on de island 4 no reason other dan 2 lend meaning 2 de bodies dat will soon b tortured. De cliche of unlikely love blossoming btw 2 broken souls in an existential setting is so old dat it could pass off as a member of the British Royal Family.
// VERDICT // Der is no “paradise” in this movie, & u can bet der won’t b any 1 awaiting 4 the slaughtered wen all de scores r settled, every1 has gotten wat dey hve coming 2 dem.

Initially I started this movie without much expectation but at some point I just fell into a trance and the next thing I know "boom!!" it's over. Night in paradise is about guns, thugs, gangs, murders, gunfights, knife fights, fistfights, car chases,...(you name it, this have it). Warning, this is not about your hero saving the damsel in distress or the guy who saves the day. Is about losers fighting against another bunch of losers in a pathetic world of their own. and in the midst of it is the our girl like a broken kite.
You can also say it's about 2 broken people.....
This is not going to give you a rush of adrenaline but instead its going to leave you stone cold. But its not dark either, more like you get sucked into a void kind of felling.

Consequences hurt less than fate
I was looking for moody violence early one morning, and as my luck would have it I settled for Night in Paradise. With a slight art film vibe, it's all ride and die with no time for happy endings. It's about bad decisions, gang drama, and death. The ML and FL form a loyalty out of what seems like circumstance, but it is actually love. A sweet but so sad existential crisis triggering type of love. I found myself disapproving but not regretful of their choices. It is rare to have a movie that isn't perfect feel so perfect anyway in spite of random flaws. Bonus points, as it follows through with its appropriately bloody conclusion. Was this review helpful to you?

Mas me fez pensar nessas coisas.

Was this review helpful to you?
