So Much Potential, All of It Wasted

Project Wolf Hunting had the cast that it needed to become a hit, but the scriptwriters squandered its potential.

A group of despicable Korean criminals – rapists, mass murderers etc. – are being expatriated to South Korea from the Philippines by cargo ship. When one of these notorious convicts, Park Jong Du, sets his plan to escape into motion, all hell breaks loose on board.

This premise, while not unique to the genre, is solid. Had it been well executed, this movie would have been enjoyable, especially if action is your cup of tea. The scriptwriters made a mess of the story, though. The script is all over the place. It can be used as a guide to how not to write action:

1. Do not complicate the story too much.

In action movies, the bulk of the screen time is devoted to action scenes. This means that if your movie is two hours long, you have an hour or less for plot, so your approach has to be realistic and economical. You should not attempt to cram the story with a zombie-like monster, sci-fi tropes, and dystopian world-building. This is enough material to base a whole series on. You should not try to fit it into a movie about notorious convicts escaping captivity because the result will be absurd, disjointed, confusing, and boring.

2. Do not kill the most interesting character in the first half of the movie.

Nothing adds as much flavor and thrill to an action movie as a charismatic main character. What would Pirates of the Caribbean be without Jack Sparrow? It would be what this movie becomes without Park Jong Du. Evil, creepy, and completely crazy, he catches your attention immediately and does not let go of it. You are torn between hating him and being entertained by his murderous flamboyance. Most importantly, you become invested in his fate. Whether he will manage to escape is the question that keeps you watching. When he clashes with another convict, Lee Do Il, sparks fly, and you are promised a great dynamic: chaotic vs. lawful evil. Then, Park Jong Du is suddenly killed.
Scriptwriters, why did you make such a poor choice? If you wanted him dead, you should have killed him in the end. Instead, you made us viewers lose interest by answering the question way too early. Furthermore, you tricked us into thinking that a character is important only to kill him off like an extra, not even halfway through the movie. The only difference between his death and those of the extras is that sad music plays when he dies. Underwhelming.

3. Do not introduce two-dimensional characters only to utilize them as one-dimensional extras.

It is nothing new, of course, that in action movies many people are shown just to be killed. However, there is no reason to waste screen time on lines and scenes for these characters if they will not contribute anything to the plot. You do not make the viewers sympathize with them. You make them wonder why these characters were introduced if they die quickly.

Overall, this movie is not worth watching unless you are into plotless, extremely graphic gore – Squid Game level gore, if not worse. It does not deserve the rating that I am giving it. I would have rated it lower, but the actors all delivered brilliant performances. Seo In Guk is phenomenal as Park Jong Du. The unhinged look in his eyes alone deserves praise. Such great acting should not have been wasted on this mess.

Just as described and much more

Starting with the description “Hard boiled extreme survival game movie” “Project Wolf hunting “ a movie never seen before.. Well this movie is like that, you have never seen anything like it, even if you think you have, I assured you, there is nothing like it, and if you think you are prepared, you are not.
Director Kim made used of tons of fake blood, so it is a very bloody and brutal movie. Director Kim also shows evil human nature, what happens when heinous criminals are trying to take over, what happens to a body or part of a body gets smashed, cut, etc.. The movie has lots of twists and turns, unexpected situations, and a beyond evil character, who has not a single drop of humanity, but it is only filled with rage and cruelty, a beast like killing machine. There are no heroes, you never know who will survive and how, the movie keeps you in your seat, time flies, there are funny parts, there are really extreme intense parts, and some parts where you will be screaming “No”, also you will be closing your eyes a lot due to the nature of the movie, but it is all part of the experience..
The acting is top notch, so many scene stealers, Seo In Guk transformation is absolutely fantastic, the way he plays a criminal is superb. Park Ho San, Sung Dong Il, Jung So Min, just to mention a few, they played characters never seen before.
All in all, this movie is a must see, but just be aware, it is gory/brutal to the extreme.

Very Brutal....

I think it's after Witch, i saw a Movie which has so many violence sequences. It's not a new thing in the k movie world. But it's been some time since a movie like this out from korean and don't think that it's an easy going film. It's very brutal after some point also disturbing.

The whole story is happening on a ship. A ship with a bunch of criminals who was transferring From Philippine to korea. Started slowly but after some time some unusual things will fall under the place, from thereon it's horrible.

No story or screenplay or even performance stand before the violence. The way they captured those bloody Brutal and bloodsheding violence is unbelievable to watch. Very creepy and definitely 18+. So watch it own your risk. Surely you will get a different experience just like Witch Part 1

This is what they sent to international film festivals?

I think I can say with total conviction that this was probably the worst 80s revival splatter movie I have seen, well since the 80s.
What was that? And even more important, why did several really fine Korean actors take part in this? And most important: there is tons of really fantastic Korean movies that could represent the unique quality of storytelling and actors abilities to the world to be send to international film festival and of all the great stuff that is there coming from Korea they chose this movie? Why?
But let me sum up why I am saying this:

Storyline:

well, there is none really, and I mean none. A short glimpse back to 2017 where some severe criminals should have been transported back from the Philipines to Korea. And there it starts to get funny. So they plan to transport the most severe criminals fom one country to another and do what? They showcase them like on a red carpet in front of non-checked audience and one of the audience members has a bomb? Ok, totally unrealistic.

Cut, it's 2019, they make another try to transport the criminals back to Korea. And what would you do if you would plan this? I tell you what you would not do. You would not just put some little handcuffs around their wrists, leave them all together on that ship with no restrictions? If you would plan to move so many of the most dangerous cirminals you would, in the year 2019, not 1959, of course have them heavily restricted, not only with handcuffs. You would have single closed cells on that ship where every single one of them is confined for the whole trip, just a small box opening to get them food. But no, here we see how they are just let them onto the ship, they can all sit together on the ground just their hands cuffed, and waiting to get loose. How ridiculous is that?

The police staff, I really had to laugh at some point. Most of them don't have guns to start with (very unlikely again on such trip) and those who have them, esepcially Jung So min, an actress I normally adore, is probably doing the most senseless and unable things imaginable. She is a times standing around like a deer in the spotlight, awkwardly holing a gun and - not shooting it when all hell breaks loose =D

The movie has no real dialogue except for foul mouthed slang and cursing and hissing all the time, very chliche, and the movie very soon turns into the most ridiculous splatter festival. And not even that is good! They totally overdid it for the sake of being supercrass which I found totally annoying. So there is like single blows to body parts and the next moments around 200 liters of blood spread like heavy rain through the whole room=D And very soon there is nothing else anymore in that movie, just lots of unrealistic 'i want to be so crass' splatter nonsense.

I started fast forwarding at some point and all of a sudden some super human blood covered 'thing' shows up and simply kills everyone in the most gory way, I didn't even get why but I really started laughing.

conclusion:

there is at least four actors and actresses in this movie I normally really like a lot and all of them are excellent actors in other productions. What made them think to say yes to such a trashy scipts is beyond me, I really can't understand it.

I seriously hope I can see all of them in better productions in the future, where they can show the quality acting they are all able to deliver easily under other circumstances.

irdk what to feel after watching the movie. maybe i just expected so much from the movie after reading its synopsis. it kinda felt fast-paced to me, i get that its a movie but idk. ik the whole story in the cargo ship was a set up for the plot (abt jang dong yoon’s character) but i think the story wouldve been more interesting without that plot or the zombie thing? idk its just me. the most interesting character also died mid of the story so??

its still good tho and the casts’ acting are all great!

waste of my 10 bucks lol

tldr, dogshit movie for being so hyped up by advertisements. even alienoid was better than this

we expected tasteful gore with intense crime/noir type setting, but turns out it's just one blood splatter after another for basically no reason whatsoever, with creature stuff. really shows how money really can do anything.

their acting was really good though. a fucking pity the movie fucking sucks because seo in guk went absolutely crazy in this one

literally left the theater devastated, the only other people in there were two couples, it's a surprise they were even able to make out with this fat pile of shit playing in the background

Lots of bloody violence

This show is ok. I actually watched it for Seo In Gook as I am his huge fan and his movies are always lit. To be honest I don’t mind horror movies and although the amount of violence was unexpected I enjoyed it. Everyone played their roles perfectly especially Seo In Gook, as usual he never disappoints except for joong so min, It seemed as if she was forced to act that role. I kept hoping her character was killed earlier cause her character was too dump and annoying but overall I liked the show.

It put the "over" into "overkill" and the "E" into "evolution"

WOW this was an awesome ... bl00dy and gory ... but mind blowing movie.

The beginning of the movie.
They definitely put the "over" in over kill ... it was saturated in blood and guts and bones and brain matter (。ꏿ﹏ꏿ。) Initially I wondered where the hell this story was going to ... I decided to stick around for two reasons:
1. Seo In Guk. OMG what a transformation!! He has such an incredible acting range ... it is always a pleasure to watch his work.
2. to see what the go was between Jang Dong Yoon who plays Lee Do Il and the "Korean-stein" ... as there seemed to be some connection there. I am glad I did.

The middle of the movie.
I found this to be quite historical and evolutionary. Historical because of the links to the Japanese Empire's Surgeon General Shiro Ishii and his Unit 731. They were infamous for diabolical and horrendous medical atrocities perpetrated upon civilians and whole villages throughout Japanese occupied territory in WWII. In an International Military Tribunal for the Far East, the United States Government gave Ishii immunity from prosecution of war crimes, in exchange for information and research for the U.S. bio-weapons program. A diabolical act in itself ... one that not only spits in the face of every single victim who was tortured and died at their hands but humanity in general. BUT here is the thing ... it is not just a Japanese thing, or a USA thing ... it is a 'any country' thing (as we find out later in the movie). The middle was also evolutionary as, at the end of the day, evolution is no respecter of persons, it really is survival of the fittest ... be it cerebrally or physically or both ... it will cut through egoic human pretentions like butter. Humans messing with human DNA ... evolution is going to kick in somewhere along the line and it may very well come back and bite humanity as it is.

The end of the movie.
The end was a bombshell. The ship - such a powerful allegory to the world - initially it was humans fighting humans on the ship ... then it was the monster fighting humans ... then the humans were all wiped out leaving monster fighting monster ... it was almost Tolkien, one monster to rule them all. The last scene ... so powerful ... the father of new life emerges from the ocean, as if in homage to that first primordial life form that first set its "foot" on land ... he walks into a new world passing by the refuse of the humanity ... the humanity that he and his kind will replace ... because it is survival of the fittest.

WOW ... this was an epic movie ... a multi-level plot that you could do a deep dive into if you wanted to ... brilliantly acted ... definitely rewatchable ... loved it.

Tidal Wave Of Blood & Gore!

19/01/2023

A group of prisoners being transported on a ship escorted by police officers, break free, only to unwillingly meet their maker due to everyone's worse nightmare lurking below deck who escapes as well...

There are some pleasant looking faces among some of the prisoners, ship crew, and police officers only...an hour in, most of them are goners including one or two of the main characters. However, it is great to see an elderly inmate make it as far as he did as in most movies he would have been the first to go or not too far behind.

Faces, in some cases, that were completely obliterated beyond recognition I might add.

I actually worked out something about 10 to 20 minutes into the film that was the case in the last 30 minutes or so.

Just so you know there is a lot of violence, blood and gore that never stops once it starts and that is from about 10-15 minutes in.

Expect rather brutal scenes that are quite graphic and disturbing.

If you after a movie that doesn't have an original story line, but is still full of action and gore then this is the right movie for you.

Seo In Guk did an awesome job as a twisted sadistic Psychopath - the tattoos on him were something else as was his violent outbursts and killing for the sake of killing.

Jang Dong Voon was exceptional as well in the role he played as was most of the cast!

If you want two hours of gruesome no need to be analysed entertainment this is highly recommended!

Bloody juicy cult film

An extreme cult film that serves a very specific midnight thriller genre. Even though it is so bloody juicy throughout the film with blood gushing out everywhere at anytime, those bloodshed are somehow bland and tasteless because of its absurd storyline that is hardly believable . When they put in gore in literally every scene, it just defeats the purpose of realistic violence and makes everything look cartoonish, but for anyone seeking a no brainer fun slaughter fest, this movie works as it is.

♥️

Confusing

I had started watching it due to edits on my fyp but it was super confusing I was only watching it because of the hot prisoner but he wasnt the main character which kinda made me lose interest, I didnt like his role as a rapist either. To be honest I don't even know who the main character was. Everything just started happening without a back story and it made it super confusing.. All I know was that these prisoners were moved onto a ship to go somewhere and out of nowhere they start killing the guards, I think they were a gang. But I had dropped the movie once the hot prisoner was killed. And then there was a prisoner changed up that looked like they were experimented on..? It made no sense at all. BUTTT it was still sort of good I guess..? wasn't really worth watching though.
