Meh

"My Man Is Cupid" presents an intriguing premise with the character Cheon Sang Hyeok (Jang Dong Yoon) as a cupid on his 28th reincarnation mission to mend his wings. His matchmaking endeavors, particularly with Oh Baek Ryeon (Nana), a charming yet unlucky-in-love veterinarian, offer a unique twist. Despite its interesting mix of fantasy, mystery, and romance elements, the series falls short in its execution. The portrayal of Korean police as stupid may be resentment from writers and producers, and the abundance of plotlines, including mythical creatures, reincarnation, and murder mysteries, feels disjointed and overwhelming. The drawn-out crime and past-life mysteries, coupled with insignificant characters, detract from the overall viewing experience. Ultimately, while the show has its entertaining moments, its lack of cohesion and excessive subplots may leave viewers feeling frustrated and disconnected from the central storyline. The addition of unnecessary and uninteresting characters that contribute little to the overall plot, making an already convoluted storyline even more overwhelming. The inclusion of multiple cupids and a love triangle is deemed tiresome and unappealing. The recurring theme of pets becoming victims in the series is discomforting.

Despite these shortcomings, the main couple's chemistry is a standout feature that kept me engaged until the end. The lead actors' performances and the background music are highlighted as the show's redeeming qualities.

However, I find the ending lacking in originality and excitement, and I feel that it falls short after a promising buildup. The repetitive nature of the conclusion is noted as a drawback, leaving me unimpressed.

In summary, while "My Man is Cupid" struggles with superfluous characters and a cluttered narrative, the strong chemistry between the main leads and their performances, as well as the soundtrack, elevate the viewing experience. Despite these positive aspects, the unsatisfying and repetitive ending detracts from the overall impression of the drama.

this drama could have been a 10...

Overall this drama was really my style. Without doubt one of the best thriller subplot I have ever watched in a kdrama. The killer mystery was just the best ever, and the police team among my favorites for this genre of kdrama. The chemistry between the two main leads? Incredible. The slowburn? Great. But... what was that end... I was really disappointed by the end... like up until episode 15 I was so glued to the screen my eyes were hunting. Episode 16 felt directed by a whole different person I don't get it... I love this drama but will forever be bitter but that rushful and exaggerated ending. I wanted the two have a happy ending however, there were so many other ways they could have done it without ruining it so much.

interesting story line!

hello just finished this drama! it was very bingeable and cute! loved nana in this i felt like i could really relate to her character. i loved how she was chasing cupid so cute teeeheheh. and her quirkiness. the inevitable murder mystery case made it so annoying tho????i hate murder stuff in a rom com and WHY THE HELL DID HE NIT GET CAUGHT. like it’s not that hard. how did they not catch him when he got in the prison… bro had my anxious as fuck. but yeah. cute couple (kinda) i saw the chemistry a little bit when they’re like fooling around but other than that it got a little awk in some scenes. idk. some gaps in the story too like what is that little stone thing sanghyuk had?? and did he know that all 3 girls were the same person?? like didn’t make that much sense…. ok. but done. average drama i think

The start was good but it didn't stick the landing

The plot had so much potential but I feel like too many things left unanswered. I didn't like how they wrapped the second lead' storyline at all. The main plot also started getting weaker towards the last few episodes and it felt rushed and unsatisfying at the end. It's a shame really because the idea of it was so good, the story could have been amazing if they handled it differently. I liked the cast, the acting was nice, so it made for an okay watch overall.

Plot was chaotic. It could not decide what it wanted to be.

6/10 is my rating. This is a 2024 South Korean fantasy romance drama with, 16, 60 minute episodes.

First I provide a unique synopsis then review

Synopsis

Cupid’s arrow never fails. So when Cupid, Cheon Sang-Hyuk (Jang Dong-yoon) accidently shoots himself, he falls in love with a human woman, Oh Baek-Ryeon (Im Jin ah;Nana), is a veteranarian who is so physically alluring men cannot helpbut fall in love with her. But due to a curse, or maybe just bad luck, every suitor has a close brush with death which causes them to leave her. But there is a much longer relationship between the two of them than either is at first aware. Can a human and a fairy find lasting love?

Review

Disappointing. I liked so many elements of this. Liked the premise, am a fan of Jang Dong-yoon, like serial killer stories, always up for romance and find supernatural interesting. But the plot was all over the place chaotic. It was like it could not decide which one of those things it wanted to be. It was okay, not completely unwatchable but with so many better choices out there it ranks low on my list. I would not seek it out nor sit down and watch it if someone else was. I do not recommend it.

Spoilers

It ends happy in the sense the main couple get together. They even give a little after story to show they had kids and remained happy.

I liked Dong yoon’s acting. He is a great actor. I thought he made a great Cupid and a detective.

Nana’s acting was fine I just disliked the character she played. I do not like overly clingy females it is cringy. And she was super clingy. When she let the serial killer trick her I could not believe someone bright enough to be a skilled veterinarian could be that stupid. It did not fit the character. Then she gets a brain injury and just acts weirder than her normal weird.

I thought it was going to be a movie about cupid and it was sometimes. Sometimes they do the cupid thing. Then oh wait it is a serial killer thing. Oops it is reincarnation story. All of the could have worked together but the writing did not accomplish that.

Her friend An Do-ra (Gong Min Jeung), falls for the weird cupid. Then weird cupid disappears but then reappears but they don’t get back together. So why did we spend so much time on their odd relationship? And if he knows he might disappear why does he not pay up front? It was also not credible that she believed he was a Cupid so quick. That whole part of the story seemed unnecessary.

Why did the other cupids hang out with main guy? He dissolves, they all dissolve, then he comes back and so do they. What is their role with him? Never fully explained. Will the one fairy quit being a dog?

The serial killer story was interesting but it was an awkward fit with the rest of the plot.

It was a show that could have been good but wasn’t because of a chaotic script. It would shift and be all about the serial killer, then hard shift and he is on the roof shooting Cupid errors, then it’s date time. It was weird. It was like they could not decide if it was a serial killer show, supernatural story or a romance and they did not blend them well or otherwise all of that could have worked.

The whole she is my woman and he is my man was just strange. I do not know many couples that refer to their significant other that way. It seems territorial like you own the person. Do not like those terms and I am not a feminist.

#MyManIsCupid. #JandDingYoon. #ImJinAh. #GongMinJeung

Drama with no boring episodes

Disclaimer : It's my own pov so please don't judge as everyone has their own taste.

My man is cupid , this drama I agree there's some overlapping plot like past life connection but the whole drama was a 9 / 10 because I have seen many dramas like King the land , A good day to be a dog , My demon I dropped these dramas mostly at ep 8 or 9 because i found the storyline to be repeated somehow or there wasn't any spark to keep going . Past life connection is a trend these days in k drama but we shouldn't judge the drama because it has this plot , a good day to be a dog and mg demon has past life connection too but the story line isn't worthy enough. My man is cupid has NO BORING EPISODES !!!! It's such a crucial point to have no boring episodes because people do drop dramas due to this thing. The way how each episode kept me awake , made me use my brain cells to solve the mystery . It's a very good drama to watch if you need romance but a bit less and a good storyline to keep u invested throughout the drama. Because sometimes in a drama only romance drops Its points. Ahh for the rewatch I think i would rewatch it again after 1 year or so..

Can Cupid also fall in love with me? Asking for a man

Whenever I watch a drama, I look for three things:
1. Is the story good?
2. Is the acting good?
3. Do I want to go lie down on train tracks?
And believe me when I say, it’s only a ten if number three has a 60% chance of happening.
In conclusion, My man is Cupid is a freaking good drama. I love the actors, the story of their forbidden love, and how, even tho both of them know they are possibly going to be hit by a white truck in the near future, they still fight for each other.
In addition to a good chemistry between the actors, the story itself is pretty good. Good mystery elements, funny moments, and romance filled scenes.

The chemistry between ML and FL is amazing.

The chemistry between ML and FL is amazing. Episode 1 was disappointing, but the story gets more interesting from episode 2 and the characters of the two main leads are worth enjoying. The setting, which twists the story of Cupid and Psyche, and the two lead actors fit so well together that it's a pleasure just to watch. The setting of choosing the person you love and rejecting the fate that someone else has decided for you, as well as their acting and appearance, all work together surprisingly well. If I were the director, I would have deleted the funny Cupid outfit and Cupid's friends' jokes. But ML is beautiful. He is an actor who can speak with his eyes. FL finally met an acting partner who matched her and blossomed. FL and ML are giving emotional acting that adds depth to the light drama. I hope I like the ending of this drama too.

Jang Dong-yoon and Nana, Charming chemistry of different types of looks and acting styles

When I first saw the poster, it was so weird. But after watching episode one, I understand what the poster means. In episode one, the curator explains a picture of a girl who rejects Cupid. It's like she rejects Cupid but still pulls him with a smile. Like she's afraid to fall in love but still wants to love.
In the poster, M.L. looks like he's pushing away F.L., but on the other hand, he smiles. He can't help but be smiling at her with her eyes closed. The poster is a reversal of Cupid's photo. It shows the emotional relationship between the two.
The most impressive part of the drama was Jang Dong-yoon and Nana's teamwork. The two create an attractive chemistry by perfectly combining different looks and different acting styles.
Nana is having fun playing the loveliest, slightly eccentric character of all her works. Jang looks like Cupid itself, an adorable, but a little stubborn fairy. His performance is very natural and makes Nana's rather exaggerated performance feel natural. Jang and Nana both have delicate facial expressions and unique sense of humor, which are cute and lovely, but very exciting and fun at the same time. I love this tempo. It is sometimes admirably beautiful, as if the faces of two different types appeal to how great chemistry they can show. The supporting cast of this drama, however, is not powerful. Other supporting cast members are anachronistic, except for the only YouTuber who lives with Nana to show unique performances. Past episodes of Cupid's friends and detective friends have been really bad.
The drama is getting more and more interesting as it goes through parts 3 and 4. The police officer who is in charge of one of the pillars of the love triangle seems a little dangerous. But even the man who cheated on me is suspicious. I think there are a lot of stories left about my past life.
The first Cupid story I expected was about a human woman who was destined to fall in love with Cupid, but it's a more interesting setting than I thought when I watched the drama.
Cupid only helps you fall in love with the god who decides your fate and connects you with the thread, but love is short and has no effect on those who are destined to be connected. So, even if a threadless FL is connected with a thousand prayers, it will not be directly connected with Cupid. At least not in the beginning. Cupid knows that because of the destruction caused by her love, she cannot still look away from her. Given that Jung-ah passed away 29 years ago, and Baek Ryeon is 29, they are probably reincarnated as the same person. This may mean that Cupid has continued to have feelings for her unconsciously.
This drama is likely to focus on the will of love chosen by lovers rather than the thread of fate that God has made for a long time.
I hope this drama will tell this story well but the script is half great and half just so.
However, I believe that the chemistry created by the acting and appearance of the two main leads will successfully imbibe the drama.

Very catchy romantic and fantasy series, with Jang Dong Yoon as ML & Nana as FL.

PLOT: The ML, Cupid, was cursed 500 years ago, for falling in love with a court lady (targeted by the king). He had to transform 29 times to undo this spell (cast by the God of Fate). He is almost at the end of his 29th transformation when he meets FL, a veterinarian, whose suitors all have accidents. She wants to cleanse this bad luck by going to pray 1000 times on a mountain. However, the CL reunion is disrupted by a serial killer and a police officer (the reincarnated king).

PROS:
+ an excellent CL (Jang Dong Yoon & Nana), with very good chemistry and lots of kisses. JDY has still a bit of a poker face, but that fits the character.
+ the 2ary characters are endearing, well developed. I love Cupid who turns into a dog ;)
+ The story is creative, coherent, intelligent. We're left with plotholes at the ending, but it's not frustrating.
+ Good balance Thriller / Romance / Humor.
+ Good OST (It's a K series :)
+ Satisfying ending.

CONS:
- We once again have an all-powerful Villain and capricious and authoritarian Gods.

## The gods are obviously not benevolent in the Korean imagination...

*********************************************************

There's more things I dislike about this drama than like

As my heading hints, I wasn't impressed with this drama. Honestly, the only reason I kept watching was to find out who the murderer was. Unlike the romance, the murder mystery was interesting...when they got back to it. I was not interested in ML/FL's romance AT ALL. Here's what I didn't like:

1) I loved this actor as Nokdu, but in this drama, he was an absolute sad sack, and I don't care for downer MLs. I couldn't get behind this century old love affair because ML obviously didn't want to be in love. He was forced into it by his own arrow. When ML is resisting for nearly the entire drama, how can you cheer for this couple when they finally get together? There was no chemistry because ML was constantly pushing FL away yet not giving her a firm 'NO'. Stop giving her hope, ok? Stop coming to see her at the vet, stopping protecting her from the killer, and for gosh sakes, stop kissing her! And ML was kind of dumb when he couldn't figure out that FL was his lost love until the hypnotist guy confirmed it. Then I guess he's okay with it since he hightailed it up the mountain and said silently to himself 'you're my woman'. Bleh. I really don't know how other reviewers can say their chemistry is amazing. It was tepid at best. I mean how can you build chemistry when we had to watch him mooning over two other women (yeah, they were supposed to be FL, but they had different faces so no, you can't build chemistry when you're kissing on Soo Hee and crying over the polka dot girl.

2) I hated how FL followed ML around like a puppy. I don't like dramas where FL is obsessed with ML, falls first or hero worships him because it immediately puts her at a disadvantage. I honestly don't know what she liked about this guy...other than he can't be hurt like her previous love interests. Also, the woman is dumb, ok? You don't go to an abandon warehouse by yourself because you get a text from the dead woman. You know there's a killer out there killing witnesses, you're the primary witness and yet you go ALONE to supposedly meet up with the dead woman. She deserved to have to crap beat out of her, ok? That's just plain stupid. I just would have liked her better if she wasn't so desperate to 'be loved'. It's pathetic. I understand that this is her first 'real' love affair, but she acts like a ten year old.

3) I 100% wanted FL with SML (the cop) but he did almost nothing to pursue her (it certainly wasn't much of a love triangle when one of the participants doesn't bother showing up) and ML wouldn't shoot that damn arrow to make her fall in love with him...even though I was screaming at him to shoot that arrow! If you can't hit her with the arrow, get the damn gun out, ok? And try more than once! Heck, the disapproving fairy/cupid could have shot her and saved himself the angst over ML's love life. Disapproving fairy was nearly as depressing as ML. It would have been more interesting if ML had shot her with the arrow & then regretted what he'd done.

4) Why in the world did they use a different actress for the two previous lives of FL? It made it seem like ML fell in love with multiple women when, in fact, it was technically the same woman. It just pissed me off to see him mooning over these other women. Sorry, I don't like seeing ML kissing other women. And, tell me, what was a grown man doing messing around with a school girl (1st reincarnation)? Ok, I suppose they had to do it so he wouldn't immediately recognize her, however, I think there was a better way to write this other than using different women. It killed the chemistry.

5) Falling in love by arrow. Yeah, I know that's what Cupid does, but it seems like a forced love rather than letting people fall in love with the person because they find something interesting about them (like the unattractive fairy & Do-Ra). The arrow love just seems shallow and superficial. I mean the only reason ML is hung up on FL is because he shot himself with his own arrow. Stupid. It doesn't seem like a real love at all so I couldn't really get behind ML/FL's love story.

6) The whole flow of the story seemed disjointed. It didn't have a smooth flow because it jumped around and introduced characters that weren't explained until later on (like the little kid).

7) The music was completely uninspiring and forgettable.

So, what's makes this drama worth watching?

1) Dong-Gu & Do-Ra's romance. Least two, at least, weren't hit by arrows. Dong-Gu was able to attract cynical Do-Ra's attention all on his own, which makes it all seem more sincere and authentic.

2) Dog fairy when he was in dog form. I mean, who doesn't love a dog, right? But, I didn't like the dog abuse in episode 14. Yeah, you don't see it, but it's implied. Use a cat instead or did FL only work on dogs?

3) I would have liked the cop/prince better if he'd actually made this a real love triangle, but he was too busy trying to discover ML's secret than capture FL's love. I felt sympathy for the Prince because Soo Hee was meant for him until that damn kid god & cupid got in their way. It's My Roommate is a Gumiho all over again. Her red string was attached to SML until that damn fox got in the way. BTW, I really like the red string of fate concept. It's so romantic; unlike those arrows.

4) The murder mystery, which was written a lot better than the romance. Unfortunately, it was overshadowed by all this reincarnation/cupid's love affair gobbledygook.

Overall, the drama wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. It was certainly nowhere near 'Strong Woman Do Bong Soon', 'What's Wrong with Secretary Kim', 'W', 'The Healer' or other dramas from the 'Golden Era' of Korean drama. It's just a drama that you watch and then forget.
