The Witty Dynamic Duo!

The chemistry is fire!

This is a story regarding a brilliant but flawed lawyer and his by-the-book assistant.

Yoshio Haneoka is brilliant and has a photographic memory. However, he suffers from panic attacks whenever he is under severe pressure.

Shoko Ishida on the other hand has failed her bar exams 4 times. However, it is not because she is dumb. I will not spoil the reason as the reason itself is considered a major part of the plot.

They both now work in Ishida's father's law firm, taking on a variety of cases. The question is : can this flawed duo actually solve any of the cases that they take on? Can they overcome their own weaknesses and fears in the process?

Every episode deals with cases involving different scenarios and it's refreshing to see how the duo uses different approaches to solve the cases.

There's also a romantic angle involved but it doesn't overshadow the main story so it's really well done in that aspect.

The acting is top notch, as expected from the likes of Kasumi Arimura and Tomoya Nakamura.

Watch it, even if it's just for the lit chemistry between Kasumi and Tomoya.

Charismatic Dynamic Duo solving common folks problems.

Completed: 10/9/2022 - 8.25

If I remember correctly, “Ishiko to Haneo: Sonna Koto de Uttaemasu?” is my first Japanese legal drama. I picked an easy and fun one to watch, which focuses on one case per episode. The cases here are all about the regular people. We can probably look around our own circles and find people who experience or know of someone who experiences similar legal issues. In that sense, this becomes an easy watch and most of the legal terms used can be understood by us regular folks without a legal background.

Even though the cases are simple, each has its own flavor and twists. I am not an expert in legal dramas, but I am always pleasantly surprised at the end of each episode when the truth is revealed. Sometimes the truth is heartbreaking, but oftentimes, it’s heartwarming. I am not usually a big fan of episodic dramas but this drama keeps me interested from start to finish.

The main attraction of this drama is our dynamic duo, Haneoka (ML/lawyer) and Ishida (FL/paralegal). I love their bantering and fun interactions. The chemistry is great and there’s good character development for both of them. They both appeared to be smart and capable, but deep down they are dealing with their own self-esteem issues. The way they work and complement each other is the best part of the show.

If you are a romance lover like me, you might be disappointed here. Yes, there is a side plot of romance, but it’s not really done very well. The ‘ship’ that I was rooting for didn’t set sail. I would say the romance is my biggest criticism of this drama. I would rather they take the whole romance plot out of the drama and just focus on the camaraderie and friendship of the three leads.

Acting is great all-around. I’ve seen all three leads in other dramas before and it’s nice to see them again in different roles. My last drama of Armura Kasamu (FL) was “Chugakusei Nikki” where she plays a high school teacher and is attracted to her student. These are two very different roles and she’s excellent in both. My last drama of Makamura Topoya (ML) was “Kono Koi Atatamemasu ka”, where he plays a cool CEO, very different than the flamboyant character in this drama. There are a few somewhat serious scenes in this drama and he did a fantastic job.

The regular supporting cast is small but mighty. It’s so good to watch a drama without any annoying characters. On another note, I don’t remember any songs from this drama. We also have some interesting fashion choices, especially the colorful shirts that ML wears in the beginning of the drama. You can see how his fashion sense changes as his character develops. FL has some nice outfits as well.

It seems like there will be a short spinoff season but the focus is on FL, the soba shop owner and the customers, and not the two MLs here. Speaking of the soba shop owner, what is up with the large quantity of food here? I’ve never seen such HUGE portions of food in a Japanese drama. Did you see the mountains of noodles and rice??

The courtroom drama Ishiko To Haneo was pretty much my favorite show of the past season, and tonight the final episode wrapped in the same way it has been throughout its run- intriguing and FUN and with a whole lot of HEART!
Everyone in this show was great, from the spazzy Oideyasu Oda, to the “puppy-dog nice guy” Eiji Akaso, and the doddering but kind and thoughtful Masashi Sada, but the duo of Tomoya Nakamura as Haneoka and Kasumi Arimura as Shoko might be the best pairing EVER!
From the beginning it was hilarious watching the two butt heads and bicker about their very different sensibilities, but it was even better as the two grew to respect and look up to each other, as as the show progressed, they became a true “ii combi” who, when partnered up, became a team no one could stop!
A drama that really made me feel good, and I’m sure you will too!

Best Legal Team!

It has been a long time since I've seen such a fantastic, strong team within the legal field! The last few legal drama's I've watched (including police/detective) were fascinating as well but, including this show, I've only seen 3 legal dramas focusing on the courtroom (i think it's 3). This story was intense, relatable, genuine, and one of the best I have seen all year... and its only October!

The teamwork between Arimura Kasumi, Nakamura Tomoya, and Akaso Eiji was wonderful to watch; it was as if they had been partners within the business for a long time! Each story had so many twists and turns, I'm glad the legal terms weren't as confusing as I thought they would be because I would have been lost. I never once predicted how a case would end, and the last few episodes had me on the edge of my seat with the wind knocked out of me!

The cases for this show were very unique, I don't remember seeing anything like them before unless it was a specific case focused on throughout the whole drama/movie/special. There were some familiar feelings, but not too strong that I felt like I was watching more episodes of a show/movie/special I had already watched. Mostly, I think, the familiar was with a scene or two that reminded me of another show in its entirety, or a specific moment in a case that reminded me of a certain actor/actress.

The music was really nice. Very calm, clean, and absolutely perfect for setting the tone and mood for either the next moment or the next episode(s). It was also nice to see actors/actresses in roles (good, bad, genius, powerful, weak, etc) that I wasn't used to seeing them as. In America we have the habit of "type casting" actors/actresses in to certain roles for their entire careers, or at least good portions of their careers; so it was nice to see, in Japan, the way these actors/actresses that I am familiar with and follow their careers that they have this strong, raw, beautiful talent of blending in splendidly with their characters and roles during a show/movie/special.

This story was very raw and honest. I could feel the strength of emotion through the screen! It didn't get too dark or overly cheesy with dramatics, which it could have a couple of times so that was surprising! But, please, don't let that assumption persuade you not to watch or that this show is "happy-go-lucky" within the law/legal genre, because that could not be further from the truth. The strength, power, and intensity of this show is insane! A very strong story was brought forth by a very powerful, beautiful, magical story cast, writer(s), directors, and support staff! This show is a powerhouse!

Refreshing drama

This drama had everything I want in a jdrama. The best quality of it i could say that the script is really strong. You can see how much work went into it. This drama felt so refreshing because of the writing itself. It mainly focuses on the main characters "Ishiko" and "Haneo" as their nicknames. They are very opposites to each other, both in their personality and work ethics but due to that, they compensate for each other in work. Ishiko's hard headedness and emotional nature really supports Haneo and the client and Haneo's intelligence and wittiness saves them a lot of times too.

They both fill in each other's gap and their relationship is such a delight to watch because they always bicker but also start to act like dorks together and start to trust each other a lot. You can see how slowly they start caring for one another. It's a beautiful development of a relationship to witness and what made it beautiful was the fact that it was all platonic. Usually, dramas tend to write off every good relationship between a man and woman as romantic but that's not the case here which is what I love the most about it. Yes you can love a person and that person can be very important to you without it being a romantic relationship. The way they both respected each other despite Ishiko being a subordinate and then having different opinions was also refreshing.

The side character of Oda Ao was a delight. He brought an innocence and cuteness to the show. I loved him so much. The way the writers added his story to add him to be the part of the team was great.

The drama is great because it has episodic format for each case but these cases are not really the cases you see being portrayed a lot. These all are very odd cases as our protagonists are "local lawyers" but the portrayal of these cases is so important but they feel so much more humane than just a bunch of murder mysteries jumbled in a episodic drama. This drama shows that being a lawyer is not just about fighting in the court, most of the time, the lawyer should try to solve the issue before the case gets into the court through settlement ( the good ones i mean). All the cases are refreshing as they are something new, they always have a good amount of mystery to them and the show so provides a good amount of social commentary without making it look preachy.

It really mixes everything really well. I think everyone should watch this drama if you want to experience good and refreshing writing. For example in one scene, the main characters say "Cheers" and then drink it like that because it's too overfilled to put it up and I think that's the most realistic portrayal of humans in a drama I've seen haha

So yes I just loved it all. The characters were lovable, especially the main trip and it was a delight to see them grow gradually throughout the cases and the bond they developed.

Humour & Heart That Grows Slowly

Found via Netflix Australia. Initially I dropped this after Episode 1 but returned a few days later. I LOVED it. Would very much like to see a second season with deeper character development. Part legal, part detective show ... All actors are all very charming, entire show is populated with gentle humour and pace is brisk. Legal topics are quirky and courtroom dramas restrained.
As the show develops, the audience learns of the various vulnerabilities of the protagonists. I believe there is potential for an intriguing love triangle. In particular, I enjoyed the show's suburban setting. This made a refreshing change from the typical "bright lights, big city" legal dramas. There are car chases, runs through the street, but also a great many plot twists and fabulous funny moments and great musical score to match the fast pace. The show's director has exercised appropriate degrees of intensity and restraint.
This series reminded me of an old 1980s show, "Remington Steele" where Pierce Brosnan assisted a lady detective, where he appeared to be the front of the business but in truth they were an equal team.
I would dearly love to see a Season 2 made, but as this was made in 2022, there not much hope. Well worth watching ... Vote UP and let folks know you want more!

It was ok

This is not the best Japanese drama I have seen, but I have to say that I really liked it.
The reason I started watching this drama was because it is a short drama and the story seemed kind of fun.
The cases were pretty simple, but I really liked that. It doesn't have to be complicated, and in real world most cases
are simple.
What I liked the most was the chemistry between the two main characters. They portrayed their characters really well.
What I didn't like was the romance between the female character and the supporting character. The chemistry between them was not good at all! They shouldn't put romance in this drama. The relationship between the two main characters was good enough. Not every drama needs a love story.
But all in all, I would recommend this drama. It is a short and sweet drama.

Uplifting legal drama with so much heart

I found this little gem while scrolling through Netflix. It's a heartwarming tale of two unlikely partners who find the courage to fight for the "weaker" ones in society and for what they want in life.

Ishida Shoko is a paralegal who works at her father's small law firm. Though a graduate from a prominent university, she has failed to bass the bar exam multiple times. Haneoka Yoshio, on the other hand, passes the bar easily due to his photographic memory despite finishing only high school. The two find themselves immediately at odds with each other when Haneoka is hired to join the firm. Through the course of the 10 episodes, they learn how to support one another and overcome their respective traumas and inner struggles.

There are plenty of darker, serious-toned dramas involving the legal process. This is not one of them. If you need something to lift you up and give you hope again in humanity, this is a nice, short one to enjoy. The cases are easy to follow and are interwoven with the characters' own stories as they progress throughout the drama. Arimura Kasumi and Nakamura Tomoya have excellent onscreen chemistry as our leads - it is almost a shame the drama did not make most of that and push their relationship together further. Shoko's fledgling romantic storyline with our second male lead, Oba Ao, really does not go anywhere. Akaso Eiji does a fine job in his role, but I just did not buy Oba's relationship with Ishida.

In my perfect world, there would be a special or second season to see our legal duo continue their bickering, common folk-helping ways. Alas, I will most likely have to settle for what we have here and rewatch their scenes together whenever I need a pick-me-up. Their quiet moments together are pure gold. Arimura and Nakamura seamlessly move between comedy and drama and ultimately move our hearts.

Really Good Drama

I enjoyed this show a lot. I wasn't sure about it at first, but it quickly grew on me and I found myself looking forward to each episode. I liked the main 4 characters the most but the guest cast also did a wonderful job. The storylines of the characters were interesting and kept you wanting to know more. There were a couple cringy bits (thus the half star drop). The ML and FL exude this vibrant sibling energy even though they are not supposed to be related and that was a great aspect to their characters. Overall, I really liked the way this drama unfolded and have already recommended it to a friend.

Easy watch

For me, it was okay. I felt like it couldn't decide if it wanted to be a comedy, serious, or straight up campy. With the mood changing, I had a hard time relating to the characters.

Both the ML and the FL were very good in their roles. The thing that impressed me the most was the number of lines they had to learn to make this show. They talked so fast!! Twice as many words as you normally hear in show like this, that's for sure.
