Rui Yoshida's 11th instalment of his tour of Hokkaido's port towns takes him to Tomakomai, a town known for its delicious hokki (Arctic surf clam)! Tomakomai is about an hour and a half south of Sapporo by car. Bar poet Rui Yoshida wanders around Tomakomai, which faces the Pacific Ocean, in search of delicious sake and snacks. He is accompanied, of course, by HBC announcer Kanako Muroya. Once again, there were lots of smiles! It was an enjoyable trip. Tomakomai is Hokkaido's representative industrial and port city, but it is also a treasure house of delicious foodstuffs. Hokki accounts for 10% of the nation's total catch and is a speciality of Tomakomai. First and foremost, hokki. In the morning, you will taste the famous "hokki curry" filled with fresh hokki. The two of them were already in high spirits after the sumptuous breakfast, which included fresh fish and crabs. After filling up their stomachs, the group will try canoeing at the foot of Mount Tarumae to enjoy the great outdoors. The air and water were clear and refreshing. Tomakomai is also famous for its skating rink. While being taught by ice hockey players, we glamorously ...... fall down on the ice! This time, after much frustration, they composed a haiku on the ice. Hungry from all the exercise, the two enjoyed the classic beef stew and meat croquettes at Daiichi Western Restaurant, which has been preserving the taste of Western cuisine for 90 years. Surrounded by a modern atmosphere with a sense of history, the food and wine are rich in flavor. In the evening, we visited a restaurant specializing in grilled fish that is popular among the locals. Fresh fish caught off the coast of Tomakomai is prepared in a unique way and served as a flavorful delicacy. Both Rui and Ana Muroya were impressed by the taste, which is so simple that it cannot be cheated. They hit it off with the regulars and enjoy the charms of Tomakomai.
