Yoshida Rui no Hokkaido Minatocho Meguri Episode 7
Hidaka Edition
The seventh instalment of bar poet Rui Yoshida's tour of Hokkaido's port towns! This time, we are going to the Hidaka region! The Hidaka region of Hokkaido faces the Pacific Ocean. Feeling the breath of spring, bar poet Rui Yoshida wanders around in search of delicious sake and snacks. Accompanying him is, of course, HBC announcer Kanako Muroya. Once again, there were many wonderful encounters.
The Hidaka region is home to thoroughbred horses that have produced many famous horses. This time, instead of suddenly drinking, the two enjoyed interacting with horses in the great outdoors. We headed to the coastal area, feeling the late spring in Hokkaido. Discovered the "Mother of the beach direct sales shop", where mother welcomed us with a pleasant voice. The store's speciality was hot, fluffy fish cakes. The best product was made from the ovaries of the willow octopus, called "tako-manma," which made Rui want to drink sake.
In the Hidaka region, sea urchins caught during this season are marketed as "spring sea urchins". At a restaurant, we enjoyed a sea urchin bowl with a generous portion of "spring sea urchin" on top. Alcohol enhances the rich taste of the sea urchin. Spring sea urchins grow on delicious kelp from the Hidaka region and are characterized by their sweetness. It is a taste that is only available in spring.
After dark, we headed to an izakaya in Shizunai, Shinhidaka Town. The building is an old private house, and the kerosene lamps create a nostalgic and warm atmosphere. The most popular dish at the restaurant is grilled half a young chicken over a charcoal fire. The secret of its flavor lies in its original seasoning, "Saturated Salt Sake". This all-purpose seasoning is made by dissolving salt in sake and adding Hidaka kelp extract.
Rui-san shares sake with patrons while savoring the full-flavored dishes. The " drinking friendship party" in Hidaka was also filled with smiles. The " haiku" was a fun one from a thoroughbred farm...
