Loved It!!

I jumped into this Drama without much expection at all. But this surprised me with how quickly I clicked on next episode after the next, and soon the whole Drama was binged watched by me till the very end. Mind you, it had nothing especial or out of ordinary in it, and yet the story was sweet, endearing and entertaining. The ML was especially good. He played both characters of an Aclaimed Hero and Tutor/Warrior from the Past quiet believably. The time I spent on it was totally worth it. Loved the Drama !

Totally underrated!

I really don't get how this masterpiece could be rated at 7.9. This is a hidden gem. The story got me crying for one third of the drama, whereas the comedy was super witty as the dialogues have insinuating meaning lol. The misunderstanding was so freaking hilarious with the implied meaning behind it (ep25).

Characters were multi-dimensional and fleshed out with outstanding acting from the talented cast. Although i don't like ML when he's being insensitive under the guise of his emotional incompetence, but he has other redeemable qualities to make up for it. FL was not my favorite at first because she was a crybaby on ep1, but she grew on me immensely later because of her maturity and depth, her equanimity in the face of hardship and injustice, not to mention her talent and resilience. I also love the side couple, especially FL's sis, for her mature perspective, bravado, and proactivity in her romantic pursuit. I also friggin love FL's dad cuz he's the coolest dad in the cdramaland.

In terms of plot and chemistry, although it was slow-paced, it doesn't feel draggy to me. And that's the reason why the emotions in this drama were thoroughly and masterfully underscored, which shook me profoundly to my core. The progress of how the leads fell in love feels super natural, convincing, and thoroughly fleshed out with sufficient buildup, in addition to their sizzling chemistry, insanely hot kisses, and swoon-worthy lines. The plot were layered and novel in a non-cliched way, despite some moments that really vexes me as ML was being a total insensitively ignorant jerk (ep21-23). The ending was hasty and should've been further elaborated to make amends for what FL had to go through. That said, this drama is totally worth watching and rewatching.

TL;DR: this drama is an angsty ballad that got me crying so bad (ಠ_ಥ ). Totally should be rated at least more than 8.1. It's a solid 8.5 for me.

It was actually pretty cute.

To my surprise I found Be my Princess pretty cute. I was a little shocked because of the mixed reviews, but I guess the storyline and acting just worked for me.

The first thing you have to do is get past the bad dubbing. Sometimes dramas have good dubbing and sometimes, it's just very awful. Like, the loud background noise and loud footsteps, you can obviously hear it's been done in a sound studio, but I get it, this was a lower budget drama.

I watched this drama for Jeremy Tsui and I was disappointed they didn't use his real voice, only because I heard his voice in The Autumn Ballad, which I enjoyed a lot. I understand his voice is a little higher pitch, but I felt like it would have complimented his acting better. I really liked the FL, but her being 23 and there's a 15ish age year gap between the FL and ML in real life is a little icky, but that is just me. Overall, they had really great chemistry and even though the FL is young, she didn't act young.

I especially loved the second couple, I'm a huge fan of Hu Yan Hao in Love is Deep and I'm disappointed he hasn't had a ML role since. I'm rooting for you! I thought the second couple had cute chemistry and I enjoyed their story line just as much as the main leads.

A lot of reviewers had issues with the second arc of the story. They thought the ML pursuing the FL was a little too long and and they wanted the original ML to come back. I, however, LOVED the second arc. I was engrossed with all the cuteness and how he chased after the FL. I thought that was the heart of the drama.

I also enjoyed the back and forth storylines between the past story and the current story. I love watching historical dramas so I felt like I got two dramas in one. I also liked the last two episodes where they clipped all the historical drama scenes together for a mini drama.

Overall, it was a low budget drama with a A list cast in my opinion. They reused the clothes a bit and the dubbing wasn't so great, but the acting and plot was where it worked for me and I guess that is what truly matters.

I want to be loved and protected by Jeremy Tsui too!

Completed - 4/23/2022 - 8.25

“Be My Princess” is an interesting drama in a sense that I thought going in that this is a light, rom-com with lots of funny scenes. This is due to the fact that we have an amnesiac male lead thinking he’s a character of a drama. When you have a premise like this, one needs to forgo some common sense to be able to fully enjoy this drama. You can’t use the logical thinking that it is a totally bad idea to let ML continue to live in this fantasyland for a year and really not do anything to help him out, but let him fall in love with FL and vice versa. But give this is a fantasy rom-com, let’s just enjoy the ride.

What I Enjoy:

1. Jeremy Tsui - Probably with most viewers, we watch this because of the handsome Jeremy Tsui playing the male lead. I’ve previously seen him in “Novoland: Sky Castle 2” and the recently aired “Autumn Ballad”. His acting is definitely great here. He has the most interesting and expressive big eyes that can smize (got the Tyra Banks reference? LOL) at you and make you melt. In his previous role, he often plays the cool and aloof character. But here as Mun Yun, we see a sweet, cute, caring and slightly playful side of him. I am just as impressed and really, how can anyone not fall for the Grand Tutor who dotes on you like a princess? But then, I still can’t ignore his slightly slouching and protruding of his neck posture.

2. Ming Wei (FL) - Zhou Jie Qiong plays the character of Ming Wei pretty decently. There’s something about her acting that I am not totally sold on, but I wouldn’t say she’s bad. Maybe just not as natural? I can’t pinpoint. However, I really like the character of Ming Wei. She is somewhat quiet, not the loud, happy-go-lucky female lead. But there’s a quiet strength and stubbornness in her. She really has gone through so much in this drama, yet she remains honest to herself, rational and confident. She is no pushover and will fight back with punch lines that hit you thinking how a girl like her can come back with that! Gosh, I didn't expect to cry with and for her so much in this drama. The middle episodes just kill me! I was bawling worrying with her and for her about what’s to come, and we know what will come for sure.

3. Supportive parents - Hooray for supportive parents in a C-drama!! Haven’t we seen enough of parents emotionally abusing their adult children? Not here! FL’s parents are the sweetest and the most supportive parents. FL’s father dotes on his wife and his two daughters, and treats them like princesses. He’s so cute and sweet, and becomes a tiger when you mess with his daughters. ML’s parents might not be as sweet, but they are also supportive of ML when he has his amnesia and doesn’t recognize them at all. That has to be heartbreaking, yet they give him the space and time to heal.

What I Don’t Quite Enjoy or Feeling Lukewarm:

1. Main Romance - I don’t think there’s enough development between FL & ML and FL & 2ML for both guys to really fall in love with her. FL and 2ML barely have any interaction. FL and ML might have more scenes together, but I don’t think for a cool and aloof guy, there’s enough to justify his actions/affections in helping FL in the beginning episodes. What do these guys see in her already to be so smitten? I can understand the romance after ML becomes the Grand Tutor and is obsessed with protecting FL and then falls in love with her. Those episodes were the most fun and sweetest. As I mentioned, who doesn’t want to be protected and loved by the Grand Tutor? But the amnesiac episodes last too long for my taste. It doesn’t leave enough time for the last part when he wakes up. I want more episodes of him waking up and having a more complicated relationship with FL, and eventually wooing her back. The last segment feels rushed and I am not satisfied.

2. Pacing and Minor Plots - As mentioned above, I think the amnesiac plot is too long and the last arc is not long enough. I also feel that the last few episodes involving the Ming and Xu families are unnecessary. It doesn’t really add anything to the main plot and just wastes time. It seems to be creating conflict for the sake of it, and to fill more episodes. This drama could have been only 24 episodes + 2 extras.

3. Secondary romance - I am lukewarm about Ming Qiao and Xiao Zhao’s romance. They are OK together. I also don’t see why Xiao Zhao will fall for a young girl like Ming Qiao. Their scenes together are ok but not cute enough, interesting enough or fluffy enough. Just OK.

4. Dubbing - How I wish this is not dubbed and we can hear Jeremy’s sexy voice. But I have come to terms with that. Watch “Autumn Ballad” for the real actors' voices. I was hoping that in a modern drama, it won’t be dubbed. But what I dislike the most are the voices of the two female leads. They both have very young and cute voices. I just don’t see our mature and mellow FL having such a young voice. Maybe that’s why it takes me a little time to like Ming Wei/Zhou Jie Qiong.

Other Observations:
1. I usually find love lines and love declarations quite cringey (words spoken by Mung Yu). But for some reason, when it’s spoken by Mung Yun, the Grand Tutor, they become sincere and lovely. I totally fell for it. There’s this innocence in him that I love.
2. Why are the shoes clacking sounds so loud in this drama?
3. The first drama about the Grand Tutor seems to be a typical historical C-drama: lovers can’t be together due to politics, married someone else but still in love with each other after all these years.
4. I like the honest conversations FL has with Mung Yu.
5. I find the whole drama too bright.
6. Only one annoying character in the drama.
7. OST - there are a few lovely songs in this drama, but I feel they are overplayed sometimes.
8. Episodes 1-28 are the real drama. Episodes 29-30 is the story of the drama, The Grand Tutor.

Honestly, I really did like the storyline. I loved how the writers went back n forth from the acting to the real world. Amnesia is real out here, my son has amnesia because of a motorcycle accident. He has full memory now. Thank you for the awareness of Amnesia. I watched Jeremy Tsui (why does he have so many aka's) in The Autumn Ballad and that was an excellent drama. I have also watched other dramas that they mentioned in his profile. He is an excellent and handsome actor. Zhou Jie Qiong (Ming Wei) was excellent. I would've been confused with who was who in with her beloved. Made me dizzy. She was adorable! I loved how she handle the role she had to play. Wu Jia Ji was so funny, strong, and cute. She did absolutely well in the part she played. Thank you to the rest of the team and supporting actors and actresses.

Great Cast But Disappointed

I enjoy the beginning of the drama, even as the ML goes thru the amnesia and becomes a character that he portrait. The idea that the FL falls for him just because he is the Tutor and treats her like a princess was to far fetch for me. She was in love with him before he had amnesia. The character of the FL is at first treated as a kind and true to herself, righteous person. Then you says yes, when she is offer a mansion and treated as a princess, leaving a beloved little sister behind and alone. The FL keeps telling the Tutor that he has to act like the modern world but she keeps him treating her like a princess (very Confusing). We all new that when The male lead would get his memory back that he would not remember her as a princess because they kept bringing it up. The truth is that you would not have forgotten the few month of activity as your memory comes back. This drama is full of cliché but I was hoping that with such good actors it would not have disappointed me. It could have been shorter. To make us wait a hole week to get the last 2 episodes of the same thing we have seen thru out the drama was even more upsetting. I thought they must be giving us more of the story after they finally marry but we were a fool to wait for nothing. The actor did their best in the performance but the writing could have been better and the direction of this drama stink.

One of the Worst Cdrama i ever watched.

Till the sixth episode I was confused why for such a good drama has this low rating but after I realized that this drama doesn’t deserve even 5 also. What I felt is before and after the ML’s head injury his character didn’t changed at all only difference is the memory loss. It is shown after the accident he becomes or remember only the character(grand tutor) he acted in his last drama but in that drama he (grand tutor)was a noble gentleman, descent and matured person but after the accident his attitude is exactly opposite to that grant tutor, he becomes mentally unstable person like jumping on the bed after seeing his mom or any strangers, I don’t whether the director wants to portray him like a child character but I felt like mentally unstable type. I really don’t know what’s there in the Chinese director’s head, when he saw his mom he starts to jumping in bed may be some excess current pass to his brain but for his mom it is an unbearable pain but here they given a funny background music like something fun is happening.
How come a selective amnesia patient acts like a mentally retard person, not only during recovering from memory loss but also before the accident and after his recovery also.

This review may contain spoilers
I started watching with some expectations. I decided to watch it because of The Autumn Ballad, I really have a crush on the protagonist.
I haven't liked it much since episode 1, but I had some hope that I would like it. I was expecting ML to lose his memory, but when he did it was even weirder. Clearly he was having psychological problems, and no one bothered to really treat him. And to worsen, FL got involved in it, and in the end already wished that ML would never recover its memory. This is strange to say the least. She even agreed to marry him without thinking about the consequences. It was actually a pretty weird drama to watch.

I didn't like the backstory either, it was too tragic, I wouldn't watch a drama like that.

Anyway, I preferred him as Mu Ting Zhou. A story of them from the beginning would have been better. But if so, it would be another story.

The ending was beautiful, their wedding, touched me a little. And I feel a little nostalgia. It really could have ended in episode 28.

OST: I really like the music at the beginning.

It's alright

I was curious about this series because of Jeremy Tsui. It is a short series ( not exploding with extremely loads of episodes) but I would say the series is not that bad and not fantastic either. It is somewhat neutral for me. There are alot of cute and funny moments in this series but I would have to say that everyone of the casts did an extremely good job, especially Jeremy Tsui with all the many variety of personalities etc. They all really did a great job. Theoretically, the series actually ends by Episode 28, the last 2 is not really altogether related to the series but just the insight of the individual Jeremy Tsui became after he lost his memories.

The songs, in my opinion, are averagely paired. There are some nice songs inside but not all of them.

It is good for a first watch if you are interested in the series after reading the synopsis. The rewatch depends on how you feel about the entire series after completing it.

Unique and heartwarming story!

LOVE IT from the beginning to the end! What an interesting story, I have never watched something like that before !

This is very unique and heartwarming story, can't let go if it yet. It's so hard to let go of some dramas, especially if the acting is outstanding- the ML stole the show as always! He needs more recognitation and more main roles! I watched everything in two days, could't stop it, skipped less interesting scenes with SMLs;)

My Thoughts

Here's my thoughts on this drama, both the good and bad. I will say that I stopped watching at episode 13, but then went and watched episodes 25 & 26.

I originally started watching this because Jeremy was amazing in The Autumn Ballad, where his own beautifully deep voice was displayed. I'd never seen any of his other work so wanted to give this a shot. My first impression of this drama was slight disappointment because his voice was overdubbed.

However I kept watching.

He did his part well and so did Hu Yun Hao. The acting was fairly good, from the actors standpoint. I will say that I wasn't impressed by any of the actresses in this drama. Overall, I found them to be on the low side of average.

Moving on,

The story had potential. I liked where they did a bit of historical in the beginning and then switched to modern for the remainder. It's something I haven't seen before. However, the plot became repetitive and from the spoilers i read about the episodes I skipped, it continued to get repetitive.

This show could've been shortened to about 24 episodes and it would've paced better, because even in the parts I watched, it was dragged out a bit more than necessary.

Essentially, this show had potential and if you like this kind of stuff, watch it and make up your own mind, but for me, I just couldn't finish it. Sadly.

Would I recommend this? Not really.

Be My Big Mess

I am still a bit shocked at how badly this came together. It's a bit amazing just all the things that went horribly wrong here.

If I hadn't seen the actress playing the FL in "Miss Truth", and if I hadn't seen the actor playing the ML in "Autumn Ballad" previously, I would have said neither of them could actually act!

OMG, don't even get me started on the sound mixing. Dear lord!!!! Never, never have I watched a drama where the FL and ML were heard walking, when they in fact had stopped moving their damn legs!! Can you imagine how frustrating that is??! The FL walks up some stairs and, not only do the sound effects not sink up with her walking, but they don't even stop after she stops walking! And this happened so many times in so many scenes!!

The performances of the leads, and even some of the secondary characters were so terrible, that I can only fault the director for that one, as I have seen these actors do quite well in other productions. The guy playing the.... not really SML (ML's best friend).... more like TML role, outshone everyone else, which was hilarious to watch.

This whole show is like a bad satire of a C drama. Unintentionally hilarious in parts, embarrassingly vacuous at others, and boring throughout.

The screenwriters had to throw in some embarrassing melodrama near the end, because they came to realize that there was no longer any plot, and they were desperate to keep the conflicts going right through to the end of the episodes. They probably didn't even know they were going to have to keep the drama going for so many episodes.
