Not so long ago, I watched My Only Love Songand really liked the romance between the princess and Moo Myung, so I was wondering if there are any other dramas that have such a couple as main characters. I'd preferably watch a sageuk, but alternatively would also be interested in a present day version with a bodyguard or something similar (I also watched The K2 recently and liked it a lot!).

To summarise, are there any kdramas out there who have:

  • a main couple that has a (male) bodyguard/servant + a princess/(female) master relationship
  • where the servant/employee has preferably a role to protect their master with bound agreement/contract (eg. not Healer/City Hunter)
  • or any case not a role that puts them above the master eg. not a teacher

If you know any dramas that fit these criteria, I would be so, so grateful! ♥

Try these out pls. These are old ones though.

In Thai there was a recent bodyguard drama named Game Maya. May not be exactly what you are asking for.

Saguek: Queen SeonDeok, Mirror of the witch, Queen Inhyuns Man

Modern: A Love to kill, 99 days with a suprrstar, My princess

Thanks for your suggestions! ♥

Witch Yoo Hee's plot looks really promising, but I see the reviews are unfortunately quite bad :( Have you seen it yourself? How did you like it?

My Fair Lady is unfortunately not what I'm looking for since the guy seems to be the one doing the ordering around (if the summary of the drama is correct!). Game Maya looks good, but I only watch kdramas nowadays :)

Thank you for your suggestions! ♥ Unfortunately, I already saw A love to kill & Queen In Hyun's Man.

I have a few questions about your other suggestions though:

Apparently, Queen Seon Deok isn't really about romance. How important is the queen/servant relationship in this drama?

Who would be the princess/master and who would be the servant in Mirror of the witch? According to the summary no character fits those descriptions.

I can't find any kdrama with the title "99 says with a superstar" :(

For My Princess, is there a love triangle? According to the summary, the romance seems to focus on the Princess and a chaebol. Or is the chaebol her servant/bodyguard?

To answer your questions with a bit of spoilers:

1. Queen Seondeok isnt romance centered, its political/royal power struggle with plot circling around two women who are fighting for the crown. Though the queen-guard relationship is very much in play. Yushin and Seondeok which actually starts out where seonseok (girl) is dressed as a boy and becomes one of Yushins men in his hwarang platoon. But as the story progress it is revealed that she is a woman, and then she is of royal blood while they somehow fall for each other along the way. Since Yushin is ultimately a hwarang, he is actually tasked to guard, protect and be a support to the Seondeok. But other than Yushin, there is another character in the name of Bidam who becomes a Hwarang by all definition in his guarding and protection of seondeok in her true ascend to the throne. This was the loveline that i truly rooted for... despite the ill fated relationship.

2. If 99 days with a super star is hard to find, look for it under Boku to Star no 99 Nichi. Its a japanese based drama but the main actress is Kim Taehee

3. My princess does have a love traingle... or more like a love square but it doesnt really have much weight or sway in the main love line. And yup the chaebol is turned into a guard for the long lost princess of korea as they try to re-establish the royal line. The family of the chaebol is tasked in protecting the royal line,

4. Mirror of the witch is about a fantasy drama about a cursed princess Yoonhee who needs to be hidden from a witch, and Heo Joon, the male lead will be her protection and boundary against the evild powers of the witch that has come to try to kill her

5. Reversed roles in master-slave: Damo, a historical drama bout a noble man and a slave as they carry out their duty as police in joseon time.  Also maybe wanna add Spy myungwol about a super star and his body bodyguard. The girl is the one protecting the guy. Same wit

Hi,

  I have seen Witch Yoo Hee and I enjoyed it.

My Fair Lady, the guy is the valet of the girl .She does the ordering but I dropped in between.

Hwayugi has a unique take on this.

You might also like Taiwanese drama the Masked Lover. The ML is a cop who leaves the force to go on a personal undercover mission to expose the female mob boss who was responsible for the death of his informant / friend. The FL is an architect abroad who returns home to take the place of her mob boss twin sister after she gets in a car accident that puts her in a coma. The ML becomes the twin sister's assistant / bodyguard. It's not the most serious drama out there, but it's a fun take on this trope.

I'm guessing you're not looking for these, but I can also think of a couple dramas where the second or third male lead has a self-appointed bodyguard role. If you're at all interested in those, the main ones that come to mind are: the Master's Sun, Gu Family Book, and the King's Woman.

@Czakhareina:

Ohh I love your description of Queen Seondeok! I'm not usually interested in dramas longer than 34 episodes, but this is very tempting, I might give it a try! :D

Ah I saw Boku to Star no 99 Nichi while searching for 99 days with a superstar. I thought you might have referred to a Korean remake perhaps. Unfortunately, I only watch kdramas nowadays!

My Princess & Mirror of the witch sound awesome as well, thank you!

@Ansuya:

Ok, thanks for answering my questions! :)

@AH:

Yeah, I started watching Hwayugi a few days ago, and it looks indeed like what I'm looking for!

I've seen the Master's Sun, and that's not what I'm looking for, unfortunately :(

Hi, I recently watched a Chinese drama titled Colorful Bone. It matches your criteria. The male lead is “ A Man of Sacrifice” ie a slave who would give up his life to save his master. The master being the female lead. Although the second male lead does grate on one’s nerves I would still recommend it. It’s pretty good!!!

Omg haha, I watched it all!! The Japanese live-action was so funny and the Korean one with Jang Geun Suk cracked me up!!

Didn't expect to see a notification for a post I had made 2 years ago haha
I guess it's a popular trope!
