I remember watching Secret Garden, and thought, "wow this kinda tv show would never be produced in america". Why? Because it's basically Sexual Harassment 101, stalking, #metoo and everything. The ML pursues the FL in such a way that there is a criminal code for it in most countries.

It's not that old, just 10 years. E-Asia is a bit different of course culturally, and when it comes to womens rights, and how that kind of harassment is viewed.

But I enjoyed Secret Garden. :) and I'm curious in these out-of-touch kdramas.

Another is Sweet 18, a high school girl in an arranged marriage with a 10 years older man, highly resistant at first, but after some consideration she loves the idea. Not something socially acceptable in the west.

Goong is one too I believe, the FL is basically treated as a furniture almost.

I'm curious to watch more of these. Not historical kdramas from joseon era, but more contemporary, 10-15 years most old.
I think the newest kdramas have been quite westernized when it comes to these things. But I love to explore them as they give such a cultural shock really :)

There are plenty of western shows with taboo relationships, abusive relationships, stalking, harassment, sexual assault, gaslighting, , etc. You, Hannibal, Killing Eve, How to Get Away with Murder, True Blood, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Game of Thrones... the list goes on and on.

Arnia, i think that there is no difference between Asia and the West on how women are often treated.

The difference is that in the West today there is a lot of propaganda about the rights of women, gays and more but only as a fashion, then nothing changes, we exaggerate where it is not needed and nothing is done where we should intervene.

You mentioned Sweet 18 that i have recently seen. Arranged marriage or not, what man in the West after married would not pretend to have sex with his wife until she is ready? I think few, unfortunately. And anyway it was the girl who wanted to marry the boy, she wasn't forced.

Don't we have little girls in our West who sell themselves to buy some clothes or something?

Maybe they don't put them on TV series or rarely ... but they are there. We have gotten better at hiding things

Personally i find a nice romanticism in Asian dramas, which in Western products you have to go back to the years before 2000.  Now, looking at Western products it seems that love is only sex.

Doctors+1 - I truly found the whole love story weird. Taboo in my view but the way it was framed as normal was crazy to me.

Watching Noble, My Love.
Wow this is so much like My Secret Romance, lol, the FL even has hickups. The ML is almost the same character as in My Secret Romance.

@Lugh

I can't remember when I last watched a romantic drama or movie made in USA. Everything is violence now, superheroes, guns, and such. The romantic/comedy genre no longer exists in USA.

Take the movie Pretty Woman as an example. It was made over 30 years ago. Today that kind of movie would never be made, never. A rich guy falls in love with a prostitute? Romanticizing prostitution.  Total taboo today.

I enjoy watching these goofy korean romantic comedy dramas.

there are two of us then :)

But i will tell you that seeing as the phenomenon kdrama, jdrama etc ...    is taking hold all over the world (MDL is one example)  think many people are fed up with some kind of entertainment

Yea, I became fed up with english language content (american made) when covid started. I had to work from home for  a long time and needed something to help me cope. There was nothing interesting for me to watch anymore from america.

I gave a korean series a try (crash landing on you) and became hooked, only watched kdrama after that.

It's exactly as I described.
The ML is so arrogant and harasshes the FL, until the FL just somehow surrenders and becomes submissive. Quite silly to watch actually. I think this series was a pilot series for My Secret Romance, they changed the style and story a bit so it's not so obnoxious, but the characters really stayed the same.
Feminists would get a mind meltdown watching this :)

For me the You are My Destiny (Japan 2020)/Fated to Love (SK 2014,) you 'series' didn't work for me. I watched You are My Destiny Japan and got really annoyed so I didn't watch the original or the ones I think might be remakes. I don't think I can handle them. I think these kinda fit what you are after, though maybe not. I could handle Noble My Love, Secret Garden etc, this one was  just too traumatic by the end and not so funny so maybe it doesn't fit.
