 | Shěn Lí 沈璃 - The demon phoenix was born with a bead in her mouth and was the strongest general in the three realms. She was unrestrained, free-spirited, deeply ashamed of the fact that the people of the demon world were servile to Heaven realm for thousands of years. She tried to escape from marriage, was seriously injured in the struggle and reverted to her original form while she fell to the (mortal lower realm) earth. Being in a coma, she was plucked and caged as a chicken or pheasant by a vendor, and then bought home by Xíng Zhǐ, who lived in seclusion in the world. Shěn Lí (沈璃) name is playing on 神 Shén "god" sound, while also sounding very "fluid" as 沈 can mean to "pour" and 璃 lí can mean glass or glazed tile. Lord Bì cāng (碧苍王 which is Shěn Lí's title, sounds very martial and cold with its meanings of dark blue and green jade colors and the rank as 王 "king". In answer to wizard Fú Shēng, she stated that she was the "Demon Lord of Chaos". 碧苍王 can be simply translated "Azure King". But despite she was the strongest general of her realm, with her powers and "Red Plume" spear, when she felt the need to defend the realm from an attack by monsters, she had to disobey orders that had her grounded in the palace. A scorpion tailed monster, Qimei (奇美), swallowed her but she hacked her way out of it. Xíng Zhǐ arrived and treated her injuries in three days, and next cured her of the poisons while ordering her to accompany him on his inspection of the seals on the Abyss. Although free-spirited, she took everything very seriously and chose reason over sentiments: if she could not give in to those, she'd try her best to protect the one she was partial to. She was relatively tolerant of children and pets, such as her "parrot" Shush and Xíng Zhǐ's "lion cub". She did not know ladies' arts and crafts, but was a fearsome warrior, a charismatic general leading her armies, who appreciated good food, especially that made by Xíng Yún for her. She battled against the wizard and Mò Fāng until she disappeared in flames in the East SEa (ep.23). But the wizard had her helpless body brought to his cave, chained and tortured to give up the fused "pearl" that was a sort of demon core. Mò Fāng freed her and flew her to a refuge on the shore of the sea. XZ caught up to her and nursed her back to better health, before taking her to the Snowy mountains to get the necessary and rare medicine that would restore her powers They became lovers, despite the opposition of both Divine and Immortal Realm. |

 | Xíng Zhǐ 行止 - The last ancient true god in the world, with extremely noble status and beauty, was the only source of stability for the people of the three realms. He seemed gentle, lazy and careless about world affairs, but in fact he was cold, distant, arrogant and sinister. He had ordered the demon world to guard the Xū Tiān Yuān (墟天渊) abyss, and "rewarded" Shěn Lí, their prince, by bestowing a marriage contract with Heaven realm, mistakenly thinking the name randomly chosen from a list, was that of a woman. Shěn Lí was extremely hostile to the imposed husband, whom she had never met before, but Xíng Zhǐ had no interest in investigating the matter, he only wanted to stay away from matters and did not want to see her again, after they met and got to know each other in mortal realm. But he was alerted about the failure of a seal he had put on the abyss, came to investigate, witnessed Shěn Lí's valiance, gradually felt sorry for her, liking her eloquent and unrestrained temperament, and he fell head over heels in love with her. He liked to tease and joke with understated humor, once even hiding behind a Monkey King (famous Joker in Chinese culture!) mask, so Shěn Lí had trouble understanding when he was serious and when he was not, with his contradictory actions and statements. He liked luring Shěn Lí with food or revelations, or sit idling with her under the Flame Red Phoenix flowering tree in his garden of Mortal Realm, that reminded him of the one in the West Garden of Heaven where he usually stopped by near the Gods Memory Hall. He felt compelled to stay near and keep Shěn Lí safe while telling her and himself why he could not be swayed by sentiments and love which was tabooed for high gods that could get stripped of their powers if they gave in to such. As the last god, he needed to stay detached. He helped her escape in the prologue by stabbing her, wounding her seriously but non lethally, so she wound fall to mortal realm and gain time there. He was infatuated with Shěn Lí and jealous of Xíng Zhǐ, but accepted her rejection ep9. His body had reportedly been "devoured" by monsters in the attack on Immortal realm (ep.22) But when SL gave chase to the wizard, it was revealed that he was the "young master" that the wizard was priming to defeat Immortal realm. He refused to kill SL, but SL killed him before engaging the wizard in her last battle and sacrifice, burning the East Sea as a phoenix.(ep.23) But... was MF dead? No, the wizard had the "power of revival", and took possession of MF's body, although MF fought to keep some free will flickering on and off, let go of SL and regain his independence! |

(It is funny that the very long list of candidates he had shown for the marriage deal may have been that of his male descendants! #33 was the number that Xíng Zhǐ, out of boredom had haphazardly chosen.) He only looked forward to celebrations and banquets in airy Lingxiao Hall, so he was taken aback when Divine realm was attacked. (ep.9, 11-12) But he was not totally bad, as his rising to help a Mortal city showed (ep.13) and he tried to help her in Divine realm when she came for the Hundred Flowers banquet. He was granted more power to purify by XZ, who he tried to help secretly (although Yōu Lán spied on him). After trying to purify Mò Fāng of his possession by the evil wizard, he persuaded Tiān Jūn to let him go with the Immortals to fight off the threat of breaking open the Abyss in wait for Divine reinforcement troops, which he finally went on to lead himself. |
