Comforting sadness
Someone used the phrase "comforting sadness" in a DM conversation and that's stuck with me as an excellent description of something I'm drawn to in films and series. Someone else on another platform asked for recs to have a bit of a cry with and I stopped myself for a few because I wasn't sure how to describe the flavour of sadness or how intertwined the comfort was. One of the things I adore about Thai series is how very good they can be at surrounding big emotions with warmth, kindness and comfort so I wanted to offer those along with sadness.
This list is to help myself record these sorts of intangibles while they're fresh in my heart and mind after re/watching.
The Broken Us is on Thai PBS; link on the drama's page. Feel free to ask me for help if you run into difficulties with their streaming service. * The Library is on youtube. * I don't know where to currently watch We Made a Beautiful Bouquet or She Devil legally * Ghost Host Ghost House is on Vibie's youtube channel * The rest are on GMMTV's.
In reading this back, I realise how I've focused on just these aspects. All of them are more than that. Comforting sadness is part of a larger whole. I also recommend the first 6 whole-heartedly as quality drama.

1. Ghost Host, Ghost House
Thai Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
This looks like a cute BL, well made but from a small company promoting itself. It is so much more - full of emotional intelligence and vulnerability and the gentlest in its handling of deep emotions.
-
2. Moonlight Chicken
Thai Drama - 2023, 8 episodes
Interconnected stories of loss and healing amongst a found family of mostly gay men. P'Aof's use of music and cinematography to surround the emotions with warmth and support is exceptional.
-
3. The Broken Us
Thai Drama - 2022, 12 episodes
This is one I want everyone to see but hesitate to recommend to anyone specifically. The issues it depicts aren't easy but it tells its story so delicately and gently. Exquisite story telling.

4. We Made a Beautiful Bouquet
Japanese Movie - 2021
The story of a relationship and how it changes as the pair respond differently to life pressures. Japanese, with a different rhythm from Thai.
-
5. He's Coming to Me
Thai Drama - 2019, 8 episodes
Much delightful humour, kindness, warmth and a gentle crescendo to the biggest cry. It is so full of love.

6. I'm Tee, Me Too
Thai Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
That Thai way of surrounding deep emotions with warmth and kindness, except here the substance is surrounded and sometimes conveyed through light fan service comedy and some late lakorn. They make it work.

7. The Library
Thai Movie - 2013
A short story with enough depth and richness to be a full length film. But everything is told through a look or a few words. This richness and brevity make for an emotionally powerful story. Quietly, gently, heartbreakingly beautiful.
31 mins, available on youtube, directed by Nattawut Poonpiriya, a master of the short film.

8. The Eclipse
Thai Drama - 2022, 12 episodes
These boys are so vulnerable in their own individual ways as well as being 18 and gay.
Less comforting sadness and more comfort + sadness. Perhaps useful if you need a couple of big cries and are bouncing off the gentler series.

9. She Devil
Thai Movie - 2014
This is more mystery/some comedy/some horror-ish in tone but in the end there is both gentle sadness and comfort.
