BL Short movies and Mini dramas - Thailand

Mini-drama.

Two-part mini-drama. 

Absolutely stupid and quite crappy--but the only point was to milk the popularity of the Mean-Plan pairing, so I guess it's fine... I do like these two together... :P

For fans of these guys--sure, check it out. But if you're not familiar with them, it's a rather pointless watch.

As of the moment I'm writing this--this title hasn't actually aired, but it's labeled as a "special" and supposed to only have one episode so it's very likely that it belongs in the "short" category.

Short documentary about the Thai BL industry.

Longish short-film. (40 minutes.) 

I haven't watched this, so I base this on the synopsis;

I think this probably belongs on the list even if there is a sex change involved. (If he would identify as a woman but likes a guy--he would be straight = not BL.)
Because as far as I understand; the choice to change sexes is not really based on gender identity but a wish to get the guy he wants. (How fricking horrible is that?!) I.e. he's gay.
It depends on how one sees it and how the piece portrays it.

I won't watch this because I think that I might end up VERY upset and angry. This plotline is absolutely disgusting, whether it would end up being because the producers are extremely disrespectful towards the whole issue of being Transgender and transitioning--or whether it would be because I want to cry at the thought that anyone would be insane enough to change their gender physically in order to get a person they're in love with.

There is no point, no story, no time. It couldn't possibly be GOOD... Take it for what it is; fanservice with Off & Gun. Who are always cute.

Very long short-film. (52 minutes.)

Installment of three connected mini-dramas, each one about different couples. 

Episode runtimes are full-lenght (aboutish 45 minutes each) but episode counts are short. Three or four episodes per series. 

Haven't gotten as far as to watch the third one, since I absolutely HATED the fírst one... This second one was okay, but forgettable.

A full lenght drama series for this couple (from "Love Mechanics") is coming up 2021.

Last installment in the series of "En of Love" mini-dramas. 

Oh, God. Where do I even start? 

The reviews for this first of the "En of Love" trilogy of mini dramas--were a slaughter-house. But I'll watch (almost) anything once. If for nothing else--at least to be able to trash it. I mean--it couldn't be QUITE that bad?

It was.

First cringe; A crazy, squealing fan going bonkers in an (utterly uninteresting) video rant. I don't want to see it in a shitload of dramas. (Which we do.) Second cringe; The intro song. (The whole OST is awful.) And thus began the major cringe-feast. 

Keywords; 

Cheesy. As in drowning in a swimming pool-sized fondue pot level of cheesy.
Far-fetched. As in--the assigned bottom (sigh), even giving in to the out-of-nowhere courting, was about as believable as Kim Jong-Un's unicorns.
Win. (In the role of Gun.) Who casted this guy?! He's about as good an actor as a some poor kid assigned to play a tree in a school play. Stiff, flat, monotone and (I'm sorry;) came off as more than a little bit... intellectually challenged. Both the character and the actor. And (if to be even more mean;) he's not fit for the role of a supposedly super-hot uni idol that people will walk over corpses to date. I actually LIKE non-gorgeous leads, but it just becomes weird when a whole school shrieks and faints over a really plain, clumsy, dorky dude who just screams "Forrest Gump".

Techs and production were fair. Acting from everyone else, varied between "uhh" and "totally okay". Folk (Bar) has promise, with a bit more experience. He's definitely the one redeeming factor of this crap.

But overall, this was just awful. A corny, sleazy, syrupy, illogical mess.

However--I don't hand out "1" ratings, unless it's an absolute catastrophe of epic levels. The extremes of "1" and "10" should be very sparsely used, IMO. A "4" is fair, taking everything into consideration. I.e.--significantly below average.

This isn't BL, this is Gay themed. Nothing fluffy about this--it's about real guys, real life, real stories and issues. And it's very good, if you want something more serious than cutesy fairytales.

The only reason I don't rate it higher, is because the entertainment value, such at it is, isn't all that high. It's rewarding, and definitely worth a watch--but it's so realistic that it becomes... plain? It's definitely one of the best Gay themed things Thailand has produced, and I recommend it to anyone except Fangirls/boys who exclusively want BL fantasies. It's just that it's somehow a bit TOO realistic to be something one gets all hyped up about. 

Which ever way I put it, it sounds like I'm complaining--but I'm not.
It just gets down to one's cravings, I guess. If you're in the mood for chocolate cake--you don't go for rye bread. But you go diabetic if you eat cake every day. Something like that.

Has a sequel season but episode count and runtime are slightly longer, so I won't list that one in this list. (7 x 45 minutes.)

For this short a short--you need to do something that's so poignant that it really pops out. This doesn't. It's cute, yeah, but it's also pointless.

Completely pointless mini-drama. I watch only to see guys smooching and that's pretty bad feedback for the producers.

This... is what it is. 5 x 25 minutes of fanservice. A bunch of cute teen boys who aren't very restrained when it comes to finding reasons to act out their innate BL tendencies with each other--here, there and everywhere. It's retarded and cheap, production is crappy, plot is idiotic and acting wasn't that awesome. These boys have shaped up during the past couple of years and are considerably better in later roles...

Reasons to watch; 

1) Cute guys making out, stripping and being all kinds of outrageous and naughty.

2) Newyear. I'll support any BL actor who's brave enough to be out and open and refuse to hide their sexual orientation in fear of not getting roles. (Which he didn't, before this one. He got refused because he was openly gay. Thank God this is starting to change.) Besides, he's a decent actor and he's cute to look at. 

Don't expect greatness because this is pretty much junk. But the reasons above are enough for me, considering the short runtime and few episodes. But I'll rate it accordingly.

There is a sequel season but I won't list it since it can't quite be counted as a mini-series. Even if the second season is aiming for "serious", I'd rather rewatch this one ten times before I force myself to watch S2 again. I hated S2...

Okay... this is questionable for this list, since the episodes are about 1 hour each... But the episode count is only five eps. 

And I just can't NOT recommend this drama enough. It's... WOW.

The insane ratings made me a little bit suspicious. I did think it sounded interesting when waiting for the release, but I'm always sceptical to crazy ratings, so I didn't except quite this level of awesomeness. 

I was blown away. And THAT does not happen often. With BL--practically never. Sure, I can adore BL series and movies--but I seldom think they hold exceptional quality in terms of story and direction. This did.
As a BL--this is a fricking 10/10. No... it's actually 11/10... (I kid you not.)

But thing is--this holds the quality of being close to flawless as a DRAMA. Not just as a BL such. I'm very restrictive with my 10s. But I can't--just can't--find anything to motivate anything other than a "masterpiece"-stamp of approval. The 0,5 point deduction is not really based on anything particular--more, like, a moderation in case I find some tiny flaws when rewatching...

This should finally convince those BL-fans who diss and label (all) Thai productions as "cheap", "commercial fanservice", "run-of-the-mill" and alike. There is true quality stuff in Thailand.

This is one of the most realistic, tender and engaging coming-of-age stories I've ever seen in the department of BL. Relatable to anyone who is, or once was, a teen--gay or straight. The insecurities, infatuations, search of self, impulsivity and intensity. 

Exquisite athmosphere, masterful direction based on careful script and planning, wonderful pacing, beautiful visuals, bulls-eye score and music (too cheesy for me, but always perfectly fitting). And the acting is absolutely phe-no-me-nal. From almost every single actor. Chemistry is outta' this world...

Yay ;D I mean, they are the main reason one would watch the two first seasons of the "Kiss" series... lol... 

In case you aren't familiar with Thai BL, or perhaps just this particular couple; They're cute.

In case you want to see more of these guys--they're a side couple in the first installment--simply called "Kiss - The Series". In S2, "Kiss Me Again", which is a prequel season (from which the scenes in this title are compiled), they have a much bigger part and their pairing is one of the main ones. In the last installment, "Dark Blue Kiss"--they are the main couple and 90 % of the drama, is BL. See further notes in the complete Thai list and Asian BL list.

Very long short--or very short full lenght movie, depending on how one sees it. (1 hour 6 minutes.)

A commercial worth watching. Such a thing does actually exist. 

Okay, to be fair, the story is far from WOW, but it doesn't really matter--the reward here is the guys. Every minute of Singto and Krist together is awesome and most BL fans would agree on that since they're among the most beloved BL couples ever.
(Btw, one can't really avoid comparing the story to Singto's actual ghost-BF-story "He's Coming to Me"...)

I do love the characters they're assigned here because we're not really used to seeing them like this. Krist being a joking spazz and Singto being a serious nerd. They also get to show off their comedic sides and they really do have those even though we haven't seen all that much of them in their previous work. Even the actual commercial parts are kind of hilarious because they're so exaggerated. 

So yeah, it's a bit retarded. With a run-of-the-mill type of story. But for 17 minutes, it still has quite a lot of substance. And even if it didn't... it's 17 minutes of Krist and Singto, right. And since they are good enough actors to make even the worst crap watchable--this is pretty nice.

A mini-drama that could have had potential, but kind of belly-flopped. When you have this short a time to work with, you really need to make a clever script, and this unfortunately wasn't clever. It tells what it aspires to do, but it just doesn't make the best possible use of the time it's given. It turned out rather shallow and forgettable.

Mini-drama. Full-lenght episodes (50 minutes each), but only five of them. 

Anthology focusing on five (more or less) iconic Thai BL couples. Every couple gets an episode each.

Some are utter crap, some are Okay +. 

But it is what it is; a treat for us who want to see more of the couples we love.
(Mork and Tee from "'Cause You're My Boy", Kongpob and Arthit from "SOTUS", Pete and Kao from the "Kiss" series, In and Sun from "My Dear Loser: Edge of 17" and Pick and Rome from "Senior Secret Love: Puppy Honey".)

Mini-drama.

Three part mini-drama with different couples. (Of which one is Phun and Noh from "Love Sick".)

Uhh. This mini-drama thingy is absolutely pointless. I didn't expect greatness, I only watched for two reasons; 

One; A glimpse of Phun and Noh in uni--which was... slightly rewarding but mostly disappointing. Just random, shallow and... uhh. And when did Noh turn into a total sharp-clawed bitch?
(It feels like Captain couldn't get into his old role of Noh and accidentally got into his role of Sean, from "Great Men Academy"...)

Second reason; I really like all the four main actors in "Love By Chance", who are all present in this one, in the same two pairings--but as different characters... This would make for a very confusing watch unless one knows beforehand that their characters here have nothing to do with their characters in "Love By Chance"... 

It's shallow, it's stupid, it's more or less a waste of time--but I guess it gives us what it inteded to. I assume that there was no deeper thought behind this whole mess of a mini-drama--other than show off one of the most beloved BL couples ever, as well as give us some more of our two main LBC couples. And it did that. So I can't give the thing an absolute bottom rating.

I'm not sure if someone who hasn't watched the main drama, would get anything out of watching this one... Definitely not something that can stand on it's own, but rather just "extras" about the guys.

This is one of those that one isn't likely to rewatch unless in a mood for good acting--even if it's great. Because this is really uncomfortable, in a lot of ways. Because this is the other side and it doesn't get much darker than this. 

The themes are disturbing and regarding some of them, one can draw parallells to the scarier sides of BL fandom. The darker side of Social Media and Fan worship of people or couples, hasn't been explored all that much in tv. Usually we only see the "happy" side of fandom, but it can be really nasty. Cyberbullying, spreading of rumours, harrassment of BFs/GFs--whether they are real or perceived. I have seen creepy examples through the years in the circles of BL fandom--IRL girlfriends of BL actors being stalked and harrassed on social media, to the degree of their BFs and people in the production team having to plead to fans to please stop their behaviour. Some people seem to forget the lines between reality and fantasy. Here, it's the perceived romantic interest of an "university idol" who gets the flak when his fans don't like the thought of their "God" being "tainted". 

We see parental pressure slowly grinding down the confidence and psyche of an elite child. Possesiveness and jealousy leading to acts that destroy lives. Self-harm, suicide attempts, severe expressions of PTSD (extremely uncomfortable scenes). Broken people who break others in turn--and the stupid sheep who create the scene for where those things happen. 

There are lights in the dark, though. Beautiful friendship, great parenting and personal strenght. 

The ending is open--choose what you want to believe happened. 

Production isn't very high-end, but sufficient. Acting is REALLY good. Should not be missed. When you're in a mood that allows for pain.

Short-film that focused too much on aesthetics and forgot to tell the story in a way that catches the audience. Rather beautiful, but too empty.

There is also a special episode for this sequel season.

This is lovely. With a runtime of only 15 minutes--it feels like a full movie. There would have been enough to make one. And it would have ended up MUCH better than the majority of BL flicks churned out by Thailand through the years. A sweet, pretty deep yet easy-going coming-of-age story and a couple I really wish we could have seen more of.
Production is pretty standard for a short, but well planned since the story is well fleshed out for its short runtime.  The lovely little Boy Sompob song "Jigsaw Heart" fits the feel and story perfectly.
