A Historical Drama with a Family Twist!

When a man’s fragile ego is bruised, he will go to any extent to humiliate the person responsible for his hurt!

The storyline of this historical is centered around King Tae Jong’s efforts to antagonize his loyal wife and her family. Set in the Goryeo period, the show focuses on Queen Won Gyeong rise to power as her husband assassinated the former Crown Prince and usurped the throne. While they were an ideal couple before that (or Prince Yi Bang Won was good at acting docile, we will never know), the King’s intentions change on ascending the throne. As it’s heart, it might seem like family drama, but the show revolves around the political tyranny and rebellion that occurred not once but twice in that era, before King Tae Jong rose to power. A husband and wife’s squabble might not seem that interesting; especially when all he does is take multiple wives to displease her. But the show is more focused on Queen Won Gyeong’s dominant personality, which the King is unable to accept.

An Entertaining Ride Indeed!

It’s been too long since I watch a crossdressing romcom this good!

Channel A’s new weekend romance “Check in Hanyang” hugely revolves around Yongcheonru, a fictional guesthouse set in the Joseon dynasty known for its grandiose and mystique. You can call it the equivalent of modern five star hotels, the guest is literally the “King” there. The show focuses on the youthful journey of four new interns who join Yongcheonru for different reasons. Starring a talented casting that includes Bae In Hyuk, Kim Ji Eun, Jung Gun Joo and Park Jae Chan, the story hints at the budding friendship and inevitable romance between the main leads. Frankly, they are chaotically hilarious and the first two episodes were a breezy ride thanks to their rambunctious camaraderie. Each character has a different personality, a storyline and a varied past. Combining these three, the storytelling offers a fresh perspective into their current lives where they struggle to settle down in Yongcheonru.

A Beautiful & Emotional Journey

What will you do if you are left stranded on a deserted island for 15 years?

tvN’s latest musical sojourn “Castaway Idol” attempts to answer this question in a lighthearted yet emotional manner. Starring Park Eun Bin, Kim Hyo Jin, Chae Jong Hyeop, Cha Hak Yeon, Kim Joo Heon in pivotal roles, the drama chronicles main lead Seo Mok Ha’s (Park Eun Bin) journey to normal life as she returns to the mainland, after being stranded on a deserted island for 15 years. The precociousness of the storyline, coupled with some excellent performances from the leading cast, lends a beautiful vibe to this somber melodrama. I have been religiously following the social media updates by tvN since the drama was announced. The initial posters and the trailers created enough buzz to keep this ship floating. The first two episodes are high on emotions, as we are introduced to the two main characters in this drama- Seo Mok Ha & her classmate, Jung Ki Ho. Now, you won’t find any information about Ki Ho, simply because the character’s current whereabouts are still under wraps. The drama heavily leans on the emotional trauma faced by these two characters as they fight for survival. Now, let’s get to know more about them before we dive headfirst into the storyline!

An Insterstellar Romance at its Best!

Lee Min Ho & Gong Hyo Jin in a cosmic romance, what could go wrong?

One of the most expensive Korean dramas to be produced in a long time, “When the Stars Gossip” has one thing working in its favor- a brilliant casting. Starring Lee Min Ho, Gong Hyo Jin, Oh Jung Se & Han Ji Eun in lead roles, the storyline showcases a romance in the midst of interstellar adventures. Set in the mystique world of outer space, the show focuses on survival instincts and mostly, reproductive abilities, especially in a scenario where resources are scarce, and they have to battle zero gravity on a daily basis. The challenges aligned with conducting research based experiments forms the core of this story. The varied characters play their role well, driving the narrative in an intriguing manner. Lee Min Ho’s Gong Ryong is an adorable personality with a tinge of rebellious attitude and oodles of fear+anxiety. This was my first time watching Lee Min Ho quiver on fear and to say, it was interesting wouldn’t suffice!

An Endearing, Heartwarming Romantic Comedy Indeed!

“Who is She”- I was stuck by this odd question when I saw the interaction between O Mal Sun & Kim Ae Sim.

What happens when a yesteryear’s star meets a older lady who desperately wants to sing her debut single? A modern retelling of the popular film “Miss Granny”, “Who Is She” focuses on Oh- Mal Soon, a grandmother who magically transforms into her 20 years old self; the only glitch being that her younger self looks exactly like Emily, an aspiring trainee at Unis Entertainment who has gone missing, just days before her debut. The premise did remind me of “Miss Night and Day” where the protagonist transforms from a young lady to an older one. “Who Is She” uses reverse transformation, but the base concept does sound similar. Oh- Mal Soon wanted to be a singer, a dream she shares with her granddaughter, Choi Ha Na. As she gets a second chance to pursue her dreams, the show will focus on her personal growth as she reignites her passion for music.

An Entertaining Watch Indeed!

Antagonism can lead to many things, specifically romance!

SBS’s new weekend offering “Love Scout” gives a dogmatic preview into the life of headhunters, most are perceived as immoral businessmen poaching talented people from well-known firms. That’s the general perception, “Love Scout” breaks into this mold by planting a firm female protagonist, Kang Ji Yun who is popular for scouting talents and helping them transfer to companies where their skills are better appreciated. She does it for money, but she has morals and principles. Like most people, our male protagonist, Yoo Eun Ho (who has just returned to workforce after a paternal leave) mistakes her intentions, he even goes to the extent of antagonizing her; only to land up in soup when circumstances force him to join her company as Ji Yun’s new secretary. The “Enemies to Lover’s” trope is rife and there are sparks flying even when our main leads are arguing. Let’s get down to the business of reviewing!
