In 1867, Shin Jae Hyo leads the Dongrijungsa which teaches pansori (traditional Korean musical storytelling). A young girl, Chae Sun, who wants to perform pansori, appears in front of him. Chae Sun has dreamed of performing pansori since she first heard Shin Jae Hyo perform when she was little, but Shin Jae Hyo turns her down because women are not allowed to perform pansori. Chae Sun then disguises herself as a man and enters the Dongrijungsa to learn pansori, but Shin Jae Hyo doesn’t accept her as his student. One day, he hears Daewongun, the most powerful man in Joseon and the father of the King, is going to hold a national competition of pansori performers known as “Naksungyeon.” Shin Jae Hyo decides to teach Chae Sun who has a true voice to perform “Chunhyangga.” If anyone finds out that Chae Sun is a woman, Shin Jae Hyo and Chae Sun will both face death. (Source: CJ Entertainment) ~~ Based on the true story of Jin Chae Seon (진채선), Joseon's first female pansori singer in 1867. Edit Translation

Gender bender historical musical romance.
It's the 18th century, Suzy plays an orphan brough up in a gisaeng house, Suzy grows up listing to jae hyo sing pansori an old joseon era kind of songs which can be performed only by men, so she starts cross dressing and takes the audition ( 18th century auditions were lit )
With a lot of romance and one of the most beautiful cinematography this movie was a delight.
It shows how women were discriminated against in olden times.
The beautiful thing is pansori are songs that need to be sang in the nature so you're always witnessing some beautiful scenery.
The art of pansori used to give Suzy a reason to live for in her hard days as a kid, so she wants to sing it so she can help heal other people as well.
The movie focuses more on the beauty of art rather than gender inequality and what not.
Which made me enjoy it a lot more.
Highly recommended for historical movie lovers
This shampoo sealed it with 8/10
PS: suzys best performance for me.
Movie quotes:
"In a poor world like this, common people can't survive"
"The fate of me being born a damn woman"
