Story:
Honestly, I find it hard to give a proper review of this drama. The first part of the drama started off pretty good, the story was interesting and it followed the original story of the novel. But then they suddenly started a completely new story in the second part of the drama. Although the first part of the second story was pretty entertaining as well, the second part and the ending was quite disappointing. It just seems the writers and director didn't really know what they wanted to deliver, which ended in a messy ending of the story. For example the role and purpose of the guy (Tian Ru Jing) in the story seems a bit forced. Since he played a big part in the novel, it seems the writers were forced to put him in the second part of the story as well, but weren't bothered to come up with a better story/role for him. He just comes up out of the blue during the story a couple of times.

I wanted to give a higher overall rating, but the last couple episodes just ruined the drama for me. In my opinion, the writers wanted to end the drama in line with the novel, which resulted in a messy and confusing ending. It would've been better if they just chose to either follow the original story of the novel or change up the story instead. Overall, it was a light and entertaining drama to watch, I would rate the first story and first part of the second story a 8,5 and the last couple of episodes a 6,5-7.

Underrated drama

Untouchable lovers is one underrated drama. This isn’t your usual cliche love story. I must admit that for the first few episodes it’s boring and you might drop it but don’t…trust me. I have rewatched this drama like 4 times because of how interesting it is.

What people find it not interesting is the fact that the storyline changed later when both ML and FL lost their memories. Also I’m sure that most people don’t know that ML at the end regained his memories from the past / beginning of the story.

It actually my first time writing a review. I just finish this drama in just three 3 days although it has been on my watch list since its airing days while waiting to have english subs.

I love chinese and korean historical love story drama. As of now apart from Eternal Love this will my second favorite historical drama. Although the actors portraying the roles are still young they somehow didn't disappoint me. I love the music, political plot/strategies and costume although the hairstyle is kinda distracting as I imagine it might be heavy wearing those hair accessories.

Song Wei Long (Rong Zhi) maybe young but I think the role suit him well and he did a great job. I checked his profile and he is learning Kung Fu since he's a child so I gave him credit for the sword dance. Guan Gabrielle (Chu Yu) also did well on her acting. I really feel the emotions they wanted to portray. I was somehow disappointed after reaching episode 17 and Chu Yu was send for marriage alliance because they didn't remember each other and I thought Rong Zhi love Concubine Ma but as the stories goes on though they didn't remember their past memories but they still rekindle they love. Hence, I want see more of their intimate moments and express their love for each other. Though ending was too short in the last 2 episodes. But I am still glad that its a happy ending for them.

If you like Eternal Love, you will most likely enjoy this drama too.

I have no words to express my views towards this drama .....What am I thinking to watch drama completely different from what was it?
First of all too much conspiracy starting to end then too much misunderstanding starting to end and which create too much confusion starting to end for the viewer (talking about me).....It took starting 6 episodes to get understanding the theme of the drama .. then drama goes in a flow till 18th episode but increasing too many "WH " questions in my head and I think this the reason I had completely watched this drama so I can get my answers but nothing happened my questions remain as it is in the end with again WH question that is What is this ?This is ending.....What ..... My question arises with this question that is 1.where is the other queen went to whom led actress replaced (duplicate character) ,what had happened to her ,is she died ?Is she captured ? What is her story .Then lead actor make his fake dead scene in front of heroine to make her realized that how much he loved her and left her in guilt, grieved as well as he wanted her to remembered him forever while the time his trust worthy person who knew everything about him.By cheating inject him some type of drugs which make him forget all his past story because that person following the instructions of his sister who want him back to their reign . Then 2nd part of the drama start where both actor and actress get married we know that he forget his past but how she forget about her past ,know again question s 1.at the end of drama he said to her that he always wanted an empire but after she come in his life ,he wanted to live with her . But at the starting part of second part showed that he love other girl wholeheartedly and ready to leave the empire for her ...But how come he using every person for his profit ...2 .I am waiting for the scenes when both of them come to know about their past and secondly there is not much romantic scenes between them because he starting take first step towards her and she push him away from her and when she tried so he push her away from him... 3.the person who make him consumed the drug(medicine) to forget his past would reveal the truth between them but instead of revealing the truth he never seen in 2nd part of the drama.
By watching this drama I thought that director finished up the drama so fast with no sense ending...
All I can say starting 15 episodes of the drama is good but after 15th episode .......

Bai Lu is the reason I would keep watching

The overall plot is actually not bad even though the ending episode was a bit rushed. Some reviewers didn't like the political rivalry and scheming in the plot but I find they are actually quite interesting. I enjoyed seeing how the political characters developed and guessing what they are up to.

Bai Lu delivered for me again but she only starts appearing in later episodes (around episode 15?). I absolutely love the character of Huo Xuan and would probably have enjoyed the series a lot more if she were the main FL. However, the character of the FL (Liu Chuyu) is really irritating and annoying for me like in many other Chinese dramas. I just find she is too naive and selfish like a smart ass teenager, and her character only finally developed into someone of more emotional maturity in the last episode. It would have been much more enjoyable to watch if her character started developing early on in the series. As a viewer, I really don't want to have to endure that much of the childish tantrums and pranks she throws at Rong Zhi because most of them are not even funny. I also can't quite stand the same childish look on Guan Xiaotong at every closeup and wonder if someone else like Peng Xiaoran would do better.

Star-studded drama

This is a star-studded drama. Aside from the leads, the attractive Guan Xiao Tong and the handsome Song Wei Long, you will see a lot of familiar popular faces, including Xu Kai, Bai Lu, Wu Jin Yan (Wei Ying Luo from Yanxi Palace) and the handsome Merxat Yalkun (Mi Re Xia Ti).

Unfortunately, this drama does have some glaring flaws. Episodes 1 to 16 are fantastic as the story is original and different from most Chinese dramas I had watched. Guan Xiao Tong acts the arrogant, promiscuous Princess ChuYu who is the emperor's favourite sister as well as Zhu Que, a look-alike assassin trained by the Tianji Sect. Engaged by the princes who are unhappy with the Emperor Liu Ziye of the Liu Song country, a cruel and psychopathic youngster, she is assigned the task of assassinating the emperor. The Tianji Sect plots to let Zhu Que impersonate ChuYu. ChuYu has a harem of male attendants which Zhu Que has to deal with; one of them is the shrewd, perceptive and mysterious Rong Zhi. These episodes are full of suspense as Zhu Que attempts to get close to the emperor while avoiding discovery that she is an impersonate, as well as hilarious as she returns to her palace to be surrounded by men trying to serve her.

The only complaint I have in these episodes is ChuYu's weird hairstyle which looks like an oversize sweet potato sticking on her head - the only competition is Medusa's hair of snakes. ChuYu's hairdo would have been more appropriate in some fairytale stories for the fairy godmother and not quite fit for a period drama.

From episode 17, the story suddenly takes a turn. From this point onwards, the story changes its setting in Liu Song to Wei, a rival country which is often at war with Liu Song. Here, ChuYu (Zhu Que) arrives as the princess sent as the bride to forge a marriage alliance and brings about peace between the two countries. As it turns out Rong Zhi is the Prince Regent in Wei and he marries both Prince ChuYu and Ma XueYun acted by Zhao LuSi on the same day. Neither Rong Zhi nor ChuYu seems to remember their past encounters. This has prompted comments on YouTube that it is a repeat of the Goodbye My Princess story. Also, ChuYu (actually Zhu Que) seems to have suffered a setback in intelligence and a personality change from a trained assassin to a clueless princess.

The only link between the first 16 episodes and the rest of the story is the lame appearance of a story-teller who says he is going to send ChuYu to Wei as his audience are unhappy on how he ends the first part of the story. This transition is very awkward. The cast is almost entirely swapped and from this point onwards, the popular stars appear: Xu Kai, Bai Lu, Wu Jin Yan, Merxat. All the momentum build up during the first 16 episodes are lost and the story starts anew. It is almost like there are two separate stories with some very loose links between the two, and ChuYu's harem of male attendants have all disappeared except for Rong Zhi.

There should have at least been some explanations why ChuYu and RongZhi do not remember the past but it is lightly glossed over. The drama seems to have been written by two different writers. Other than this awkward turn in the story, both stories are quite interesting. And the second part is quite unlike Goodbye My Princess although the theme is similar and therefore lacks originality.

The chemistry between the leads is great. Song WeiLong looked very mature for his age in this drama - I was surprised how young he was when this drama was produced. And you have Wu Jin Yan as the cunning Empress Dowager befitting her previous role as Wei Ying Luo in YanXi Palace. Of course, the star-studded cast does outstandingly well. Zhao LuSi acts a psychopathic woman driven by jealousy, a departure from her usual characters.

Additionally, the Wei costumes for the ladies are pretty but rather monotonous - they are all the same with a stiff shawl and wide skirts. It is almost like the production budget has all been spent on the stars and they have to save on the costume design budget.

So if you overlook these awkward points, this drama is quite interesting to watch. I have given this drama a 8.5 for its star-studded cast, excellent acting and an interesting part 1 - higher than its current rating on mydramalist.com.

I debated about giving it up, as the story is all over the place. But I could not let it go, I have to keep watching it. There are numerous plots and it will require your full attention to concentrate on who is trying to kill who and who is plotting against which person.
I think the writer could do more with the script. They are a number of loose ends which need closure. It seems that the writer forgot to go back and review the numerous plots they started but not finished.
Overall though it is not that bad.

Beyond the ordinary

Very cleverly designed, unusual to the three-part conventional dramas we are accustomed. It was refreshing to watch different angles of the same history. The character development is flawless with loads of twists and turns, and the acting is superb.
Reiterating what someone wrote in the recommendations, every episode is compelling and has something to offer to the viewer. I absolutely loved it because it's so unconventional. I wish they'd make more dramas like this. The chemistry among the main lead actors is spot on, and at the end we are rewarded with a happy ending. What else would you wish for?

Here's the thing... despite all the issues I had with Untouchable Lovers, I still could not stop watching it. I loved the main leads and I was rooting for them. There's a lot of scheming in this drama and a lot of surprises (maybe I was surprised because I didn't care enough about those storylines to wonder what would happen next), and overall I thought the cast was great.

Having read some reviews/recaps, I half-heartedly watched episodes 1-16. I find what happens in episode 16 very bizarre and I don't like how the story barely connects before and after what happens. There were some characters that I wanted to see more of and I was disappointed that some did not return. At times, I wished Chu Yu would be more understanding and less naive, but then again, that's why Rong Zhi falls in love with her so I guess I can't complain too much. I just didn't like that she seemed so powerless all the time - it was an endless cycle of her being set up by others. Aside from the main couple, I loved Shen Yu and Qing Yue. The scenes with Chu Yu and Qing Yue were so funny and endearing.

I generally love the theme of destiny in dramas, but it felt underwhelming in Untouchable Lovers. Tian Rujing could have had a more powerful purpose in the show, but his scenes towards the end felt unnecessary...

Lastly, I don't know if it was deliberate or not, but after episode 16 Song Wei Long (Rong Zhi) looked really thin... maybe partly due to the character being in poor health but it was very distracting.

One thing is when one of the primary characters is evil and you hate him or her but it becomes excrutiatingly painful to watch when the main character is so damned stupid.

With only six episodes to go, weeks ago, this thought entered my mind: Do I really have so much life left in me that I can waste it watching a show I hated. But in reality, I didn't hate the show. I liked the plot, all the twists, and especially the handsome cast. I only hated one character and unfortunately, she is the lead. I liked the murderous evil scheming secondary ones more.

So, I feel compelled to ask writers, why is so much importance placed on a character who is so selfish, immature and blind? Why make her unbearable?

OKay so I just finished watching it, and let me tell y'all something... this drama was... kinda good and kinda weird at the same time? What was the point of the first 16-17 episodes if both the leads' memories were gonna be sealed?

One thing I really disliked about the drama is the fact that the 2nd female lead had way more screen-time than the actual fl. The writers focused too much on her character that it became overbearing lol.
I am not a big fan of the last episode either, everything was going downhill, and only in the last five (?) minutes we got some happy moments.

Thank you, this is the worst series I've ever watched

I will be extremely honest (And I will try my best not to give spoilers, I promise):

To begin with, this series presents us with 2 different stories. This series is actually a story that is being told by a man in the square. From episode 1 to 16 it is a story about a spy who is the princess's look-alike and switches places with her to spy on the palace.
For some reason in episode 17, the people who are listening to the story get angry, and say that the story "didn't end well!", so the man who is telling the story decides to start all over again, and tell a new story TOTALLY changing the story. origin and personality of the characters. It's no joke, LITERALLY THIS happens.
They completely ignore the story of episodes 1 to 16. There were people who died, there were moments when we felt distressed, but they simply said "That didn't happen, forget it, let's start over" and excluded these characters. In the new story they only kept about 4 characters (along with the protagonists), and the rest they threw away and changed the cast.

Now let’s get to the specific points:
* The main couple is only a couple out of pure convenience, as there is practically no romantic development for them.

*All the other couples in the series are better than the protagonists! It's no joke, any other romantic story within the series is better. Actress Bai Lu plays 2 characters with 2 romantic stories, and the 2 romances are better than the main romance. Actress Zhao Lu Si's romance story is also better, and the emperor's lover's romance story is also better... Anyway, even the TRAGIC romantic stories that happen in the series are more beautiful than the main couple's romance.

*The female protagonist is only intelligent when it suits her, she is completely stupid for most of the series, acting like a child, then when something goes wrong she becomes the reincarnation of Sherlock Holmes.

*Everyone in the series hates her and wants her to die or go back to her palace, even the protagonist acts as if "it doesn't matter" to him.

* The secondary plots are attractive, but the main plot is this nonsense from the protagonists and it's very boring. If the story were about General Feifang's story, I believe it would be incredible, but it's not. I only felt relieved when these other characters appeared on the scene. I might have been angry with them (since some of them were bad), but at least I felt something.

*GOOD SIDE OF WATCHING Untouchable Lovers:

- I managed to watch Zhao Lu Si playing the villain;
- Now I have a series to put on the podium as "Worst series I've ever watched". So, whenever I watch something bad, I can say: "This show may be bad, but nothing beats the HORROR that was Untouchable Lovers."
