Tadao is a North Korean immigrant who works in a taxi cab corporation wholly owned by another Korean immigrant whose dream is to build a golf course. He suffers from chronic discrimination. Tadao's mother owns a karaoke bar. Connie, a Filipino immigrant, is the newly hired bartender who can fluently speak Japanese. Tadao pursues the homesick Connie to his mother's dismay. I understand this film was a cultural milestone in Japanese cinema, since it was the first movie that tackled racism in a direct manner and portrayed immigrants in a positive way. I think it would be worth checking out films released during the same period of time and see how the film industry in Japan evolved. I'll get into it eventually.
