So far this is the most peculiar drama I've seen. As for genre, instead of life and drama, I'd say it's a psychological crime story.
The theme is suicide, so I guess numerous people will drop it just because of that. But it's not as gloomy as it seems at first. Actually it's very funny at times and the action scenes are the best!
The acting is superb. Every one of the characters is believable, you'll love them, you'll hate them, but one thing is for sure, you will not be untouched by them.
I recommend this drama for those, who are looking for an unique piece, and aren't afraid of heavy themes and the bad sides of people.
Also be aware, that the the story drags at ep 2 and 3, but after that the pace is very good.
Two more things I'd like to compliment in this drama; the writing is great and the music is very good too.
So for those who are looking for non-romantic drama, this could be a great choice.

I absolutely adore Ashita no Kita Yoshio. I have recommended it to several drama watchers including a diehard nothing's better than K-dramas person and they all loved it. Your heart can't help, but go out to the affable, down on his luck, curry loving Kita Yoshio played by the wonderful Kohinata Fumiyo. Ashita is brillantly written. I'm sorry, but no one tells a story and makes every moment count like the Japanese especially in 11 episodes. It might be a drama about a 40-something balding guy who plans to commit suicide, but it's life affirming. Yeah the drama may have some flaws here and there, but really who cares. It's a great drama and you do yourself a disservice if you don't watch it.

edit June 2020: Since I first wrote this review, I've rewatched Ashita no Kita Yoshio and fallen for it all over again. Part of me feels as if I should make the review longer, but honestly, it says it all.

Although extremely difficult to categorize (Is this a noir? Or is it rather a drama? Is it a feel-good story? Or rather a dark tale of personal growth? Or maybe...a little bit of all of the above, and then some more?), this is without the slightest doubt a deeply original and interesting dorama, featuring a very nice message, a pretty weird but solid script, some great acting (plus, there's Yoshitaka Yuriko, which is always a good selling point for me), some very good directing/photography, and last but not least, a superb jazzy soundtrack!
