CAUTION CAUTION
this movie has strong depressing themes and a lot of brutality, rape, war, self-harm even human humiliation, so if you want to watch it, you need to know.
a movie about a girl who is 15 years old that gets taked by the japanese army in occupied korea in 1943.
along with many other girls who are her age and younger, they get raped, tortured and killed by the japanese troops, while most of her friends died, she survives and manages to escape, While in present day 2015, she is a halmoni now and she meets a young shaman 16 years old who suffered a similar fate of getting raped and later starts living with a shaman, the young girl helps the halmoni to go on a journey to send the lost souls of her old friends ( who got raped/killed in 1943) to a better place.
the movie did an excellent job in being both gloomy, dark and melancholic from minute 1 to the end of the 2 hours. I was in fear and agony all the movie. the writing, the cast and the entire production is damn marvelous. ill never rewatch this. but its a MUST watch even though its gruesome and just depressing.
Based on similar real case called the Nanking rape.

The movie makes me felt extremely sad. The way the Japanese army treated the Korean girls was so cruel and merciless. I sincerely hope that there will be a person to lend a helping hand to the girls. Despite living in such worse situation, the girl did not give up on her life. She was strong in continuing her life by overcoming all the problems. I was so impressed with her determination. In conclusion, the movie Spirits' Homecoming was truly heartbreaking and meaningful.

After I watch this movie, I feel like this was a heart-breaking movie. I feel very sad and angry to watch this movie. I feel very grateful that I was born in an era of peace. During the Japanese occupation of North Korea (1905-1945), the Japanese army began to "kidnapped" young girls to use them as prostitutes and one of the victim is Jung-Min. At the beginning of the movie, we can see that Jung min lives in a complete family and lives a carefree life every day. However, Japanese soldiers had taken her away to become the prostitutes when she was 14 years old. In that time, she is still a minor woman. It make us very angry to see this kind of situation. I remember that at the middle of the movie Jung-Min suddenly passed out and was taken to the medical room. The doctor judged that she was fainted because of the first physiological period. This happened after he was taken away. From my opinion, Jung-Min mother would have taught her how to deal with it and would not lead to her own fainting or not paying attention to her first physiological period if she was not taken away at that time. Not only that, the Japanese soldiers are so disrespectful to girls at that time. Every day, they beat the girls without any reason, forced them to work hard, and also sexually assaulted many underage teenagers. This really makes me feel very sad and disappointed. But from another perspective, we found that Jung-Min is a girl who is very friendly and very kind. I remember that part of the movie was when Jung-Min took his friend to run away, and a friend of Jung-Min accidentally got caught. At that time, Jung-Min chose to run back to accompany her friends and get caught back instead of leaving his friends to escape. This is the only thing that makes me very happy to watch this movie.

First, I would like to thanks Ms Kim Hee Jung introduce us this movie. From my view, this definitely referred as an emotional movie for me leave me feeling drained afterwards. The brutality of Japanese soldiers showed to the girls make them desperate in their life. However, there is still a value which we need to be learn for, Humanity. There is one of the Japan Soldier shows care and did not behave like others do to the girls. The girls much appreciate to the action of the kind soldier. Unfortunately, the kind soldier was killed by his serjeant due to not follow his order. For any of you who tend to tear up during sad films, bring lots of tissues as you’ll need them.

And the last thing I would like express from my on view is to be a man, we must learn how to respect and other people most importantly, woman. Never forcing a person to do the things they are unwilling with it. Every person have their own will and right to choose what they really want. Therefore, people around the world should avoid negative thinking and always learn to be positive in every aspect. Thank You

This is a very heart-breaking movie. In the movie , I feels angry and very sad when watching how cruel the Japanese soldiers treat the young girls. Even the young girl was 14 years old, they also didnt even let her go. By bullying and rape the young girl, it will cause serious depression inside them forever and ever. The girl is strong to overcome the problem. Big salute to the girl in this movie. In the end, i think Spirits' Homecoming was very meaningful and i learn many lesson from this movie.

This movies is the movies that make our cry and feel very sad. In the beginning of the movies, it was so heartbreaking when jung-min was tobe force go away by Japanese soldiers. It is emotion when jung-min parent express their disappointment with their daughter. What makes us angry is that Japanese soldiers rape these women. The Japanese soldiers without human nature hurts these little girls by beat them. Conversely, it also make us feel some humanity. The one scene that show for the one Japanese soldier which named Danaka , he no insulting jung-min,but also help her to run away by give her the map. Furthermore, we feel that very cruel when these soldiers kill these innocent girls. In this movies, we also feel that treat others with the sincerely, this is because the jung-min treat the young-hee very well, it show the true friendships. When the screen that the grandmother meets again with the jung-min after many years , it really make us sentimental. This movie makes us have a lot of emotions, such as touched, angry and sentimental. In overall, this is a movie that worth to watching.

This is by no far something a person of weak heart can watch. It is by no means graphical like many other movies but yet very disturbing. It shows the sad life of Korean comfort women.
As a fellow woman this story resonates within you. Your heart goes out to the countless women who were tortured. The brutality they faced cannot be just driven away by a simple forgiveness. For me I did not feel anger to the Japanese but pity, pity that they had their lives like that. Pity as to what went through their heads to become such inhuman beings. While reading of the Nanking Massacre this turned even worse for me. It made me think what kind of retribution they would have had after this life( Being a a Buddhist karma is something I believe in but this is entirely my own thoughts). The story had a single glimmer of hope within the story in the portrayal of Danaka and I was sad how he ended too. Being a romantic I couldn't help but wish he had reunited with his family or Jungmin.
Like I said this isn't for the weak heart, I was utterly sad by the end and had a very hard time coming back from this film.

After I finish watching the movie, I feel very sad and this movie very touches my heart. I'm looking forward to seeing “Spirits’ Homecoming”. Perhaps, it is because of the theme of "comfort women" that the film has been on the moral high ground from the very beginning. Compared with the common life theme, it can easily impress the audience with a little effort on the subject. However, in this movie, to my personal feelings, I can only count it as qualified. Comfort women were victims of world war ii. We should give them more sympathy, understanding, and respect. Japanese soldiers are cowards who bully the weak. The historical damage brought by the Japanese invasion war concerns the happiness of the people and the unity of the nation. Women should never forget to stand on their own feet and become stronger because the people with power in this world will become bad and the bad guys will bully the weak.

This movie is really make me cry. this is a spirit for survive.
Spirits’ Homecoming also surprised me by showing some positive examples of humanity. Small kindnesses. Loyalty. And even one example of a soldier who was human and decent. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a brutal film to watch yet it also shows hope and compassion, especially in how the girls treated each other.
Speaking of the emotion, it permeates the film but some scenes seem to bleed it despite their on-the-surface normality. The scene with the grandmother in the tub, when the camera traveled across the sea, or the butterflies – out of context, none of those should cause tears to stream down your face but they will. Because context is everything in this film. For any of you who tend to tear up during sad films, bring lots of tissues as you’ll need them.

Story of Korean sex-slaves during World War II. Somehow doesn't make the Japanese evil gruesome enough, but I guess they wanted to make it easy enough viewing without rubbing the horrific details in everybody's face the entire movie. A gripping drama connecting the tragic events with how one of the victims deals emotionally with the shame decades later. A important movie, though not a total homerun.

I was angered as thinking about those many women forced into sex slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army during the World War II. I was infuriated about how their dark history was clumsily and blatantly presented through rote storytelling and incompetent filmmaking. Feeling depressed and disgusted more and more, I constantly sighed to myself with resignation during the morning screening on March 1st, which happens to be the Independence Movement Day in South Korea.
