I recently finished watching Hero, (2001, 2006, 2014, and 2015). They were fun to watch, I’m sure I’ll look at those again in the next few months. All the episodes have substance to them (Congratulations to the writers!), and the ensemble acting was superb! My only regret is that I have to watch the series with the subtitles; I’m not a native speaker but I totally got the funny parts, cried at the sad ones, and felt a bit of disappointment that Kuryuu-san didn’t even hold Amamiya-san’s hand when they said good bye.
The 29-year old Kimura Takuya in Hero, 2001 was, and still is, pleasant to the eyes. His facial expressions communicates a lot but that’s what a good actor is about, isn’t it? Perhaps he’s gotten to the pinnacle of his acting career, a goal that actors would love to achieve. I look forward to seeing him in other roles as well. The cast was well chosen; more than that, the directors had a vision, created the success it was (2001) and 16 years later, I saw all four and was touched by the timeless words in the show. I must admit that the series and the movies slowly pulled me out of a darkness and inspired me to write again. Thank you!
We go to see the performing arts to be entertained, to forget the challenges we face. There, we can see our wishes for beautiful, fulfilling lives coming true. Thank goodness for films, we get that vicarious experience of solving problems, of joy, for an hour or two. Thank you to the actors who make those wishes come to life; thank you to Kimura Takuya whose acting shows what it might be like to be present in the moment, to be a participant in life.

It is hard to explain to someone why HERO is so good, considering it's release date and video quality. But at the same time, the answer to this question is very straight forward: HERO is so good because it is too simple.
It's core elements are pillars to any drama/movie: acting, character development, soundtrack and plot. It is clear that at the time HERO didn't have a "crazy" budget but yet, with an incredible cast of actors, they manage to deliver one of the best acting I have seen in a screen, and that's not exaggeration. If you're a "movie head" like myself, you are going to love the acting here, specially when it comes to Kimura Takuya. This man alone is worth the watch, as he delivers EVERY SINGLE EPISODE.
Basically, if you appreciate good-quality dramas, with a superb acting, soundtrack, characters and plots, there is no way you should miss HERO!

What was/is it about this detective-type drama that makes the feeling of nostalgia resound so deep within me? The story is quite simple, yet chalk full of life lessons that you soon won't forget. That combined with a perfect OST (I can hear Utada Hikaru now) and Kimutaku (he is so charismatic I just cannot) made for a memorable drama full of charm and HEART (something I equate with jdramas in general). The rest of the cast was cool too, but I didn't really care for Matsu Takako that much.
So HERO is about this unconventional prosecutor named Kuryu Kohei who shakes things up and challenges the way cases are solved at a detective branch that he's been transferred to. His coworkers are not used to his unusual ways and are weary of him/ don't take his seriously (at first). And with each episode, Kohei tackles a new case, and each time it shows what an excellent prosecutor he is. Each case deals with some type of issue, and you can bet there will be a heartwarming life lesson at the end of it.
At the end of the day, this drama is not all that spectacular. BUT it left me with a good feeling in the end. There's a reason HERO was Kimutaku's highest rated drama. The combination of all the factors I mentioned earlier (simple story + OST + life lessons) was put together so perfectly the way only jdramas are. This was a solid 8 in my book. If you are a Kimutaku fan, I urge you to watch.

I expected more
Yes i know, this got so many good reviews and I really hoped to enjoy this as much as I enjoyed the Hero SP (sorry, I started in mixed order). Sadly I barely made it through the first season. I know this series is 20 years old and many behaviour and talking were normal to that time. But I had a hugh problem with the sexism in the prosecutors office and the way everyone bossed around Amamiya (even Kuryu. He was the worst of all. Physically and verbally). This was not funny and I'm sure I wouldn't have laughed back then. I missed the light comedy from the SP very much. Whatever. Some scenes were cute and some cases super interesting. I liked the court scenes in general. After all, I won't rewatch this. Even if it's with Kimura. He has better series imoWas this review helpful to you?
The storyline is easy to follow and there's nothing too intense so it's such a nice lighthearted drama to watch. I love the aesthetic of it and the acting of all the characters are impressive. There are top notch actors such as Abe Hiroshi, Kohinata Fumiyo, and of course Kimura Takuya.
Honestly there's nothing much I can fault and it's extremely satisfying to watch and rewatch!!
Definitely recommend if you're trying to learn Japanese too :)
