There were too many times when a misunderstanding occurred between the main couple. There was overuse of phrases like "my destiny is to..." "but I want to live like this, but I've got no choice" " I must avenge my father" "I love you" then "I hate you" (Lol. They probably ran out of lines to say)
I was like, I get the idea, the characters are confused due to what they've been though but it was over elaborated and it felt over complicated.
Add in a few extra plot twist and unnecessary new inputs to the already tangled plot line, you get WTF IS GOING ON?
However, character development is shown as the drama proceeds. Basically, all the chaos and pain is caused by the idea of revenge and betrayal, which got really really annoying since one moment everything is fine the BAM!-- it gets worse, then slowly everything is peaceful BUT NO some other trouble stirs it all up again and again and again.... and that kind of replays that through the episodes.
There were sweet and funny moments with Ye Kai and Ding Ling Ling which were really cute. There were nice fighting scenes and special effects. Costumes were really nice too and the music was alright, that middle eastern tune was overplayed whenever they danced. I also liked the casting and felt they did as best they could with the role given.
The ending was so FRUSTRATING!!! It was really sad, disappointing and a little confusing.
I watched 50 episodes and this is what I end up with? I guess the unhappy ending is refreshing....?

I really liked this drama but I didn't at some parts.
Story: it starts off super interesting and appealing but as the episodes went by it dragged a little bit and I agree with the other reviewer that there were too many repeating phrases and the same crap over and over. However, I still liked it a lot. I watched the original version of this from HK and the storyline is quite similar except the biggest difference is the romance. Also, I wish whenever they added more misunderstanding between the main couple they should at least address it but no the couple just briefly overlooks the problem and then gets back together and then leave again which doesn't really bother me that much since I wanted him to end up with Cui Nong lol.. And the plot is so unjust to Cui Nong because she suffered so much and sacrificed herself silently for everyone she loved but in the end I never really saw anyone show deep gratification for her actions... In fact, they didn't even know half of the things she did. ugh. and the end is really sad but I'm not bothered because I wanted him to end up with Cui Nong so yea haha...Acting: this drama is notable for its actors and actresses!! AMAZING performance. I will check out all of their future dramas bc they all acted great! Cui Nong was amazing and I honestly think her performance was better than Viann in this drama ... Viann somehow annoyed me throughout the drama idk if her character is supposed to be this annoying or she can't really act lol but yea I really wanted Cui Nong to end up with Fu Hongxue because they were perfect for each other... But Cui Nong was way too selfless and gave her everything for Ma Fang Ling her little sister. So that was very sad. Personally I think Fu Hongxue has always loved Cui Nong and the reason he loved Ma Fang Ling was because he felt bad and responsible towards her. Also Cui Nong lied to him that she was already someone else's wife. In the end I believe Fu Hongxue loved Cui Nong up until her death although not as strong as before because he got closer to Ma Fang Ling. I feel so bad for Cui Nong. Anyways, this drama has amazing actors/actresses I highly recommend it because of this.
Music: I liked some of the music and some was meh.
Rewatch value: If I do rewatch it's only for Cui Nong and Fu Hongxue together LOL
Overall: I recommend this drama. I really liked it.

I don't really like ma fang ling. Seems too cheap. She gives her all to guy who doesn't even clearly love her. She is beautiful indeed. That guy just keep his rockface all the time. Don't know weather Fu Hong Xue really love her or not since MFL keep kissing him first and FHX seems can not reject her just because he is 'man' but no love include. Maybe he is afraid of her mother or maybe the actor. And for Ye Kai, he does not looks really care about MFL or has any feeling toward her. How could the synopsis said that Ye Kai falls for MFL? BUT I think Viann Zhang looks really pretty on period drama costumes. Her acting is not something awesome though. I keep fast forwarding and skip some episodes :) Was this review helpful to you?

Watched this when it first came out. I did not expect to like it nor did I know any of the actors except for Vincent Jiao who I watched a few of his works when he was younger. I ended up enjoying this more than I thought. It is your classic enemies to lovers plot except more angsty. I read the novel before too and watched the original with Wallace Chung so I had a lot to compare it to. The plot shifted a lot and so did the love line. Originally, FHX and CN was lovers-and I love them in the novel. I hated that they chnaged it to FHX and MFL. In addition to that FHX and MFL had too many miscommunicatio- or non communication at all to the point where it was getting annoying and frustrated. Have to say my favorite character is Cui Nong and will always be Cui Nong. They should've just let her die in FHX's arms and leave it at that. Watching this drama gave me sooo much headache and stress. LOL. But because of this I became a fan of Zhu Yi Long. Rewatch Value for me is 1/10. Was this review helpful to you?

Wasn’t much of a fan
To begin, my memories of this drama may be hazy as it’s been some years since I watched it but I do still remember some of how I felt while I watched it.So this is definitely a remake of the magic blade and seeing as I’d already watched the magic blade before this, I couldn’t help but compare the two and the result was I wasn’t a fan of border town prodigal. I didn’t like how they changed certain plot lines and introduced new characters leading to what I felt was an over complicated plot. The magic blade had its twists but it was pretty straightforward. In BTP I felt they just kept adding unnecessary stuff and the love triangle was just irritating.
Honestly most of my dislike for this drama stems from one character that is Ma Fangling. first off in the magic blade she didn’t even exist then she shows up in this one all entitled and irritating. I felt she was too self centered and pushy on Fu Hong Xue and basically forced her love on him. Like girl have some pride. I much preferred Cui Nong. The ending was expectedly irritating. I was prepared for it but it was very disappointing in terms of the love factor. I’d love to explain what I mean by that but I’d be majorly spoiling.
I haven’t read Gu Long’s works so I’m not sure which between the two stuck to the source material but in the end I still prefer the magic blade.
Despite all this, the soundtrack was amazing, the cast were gorgeous and so were the visuals and costumes but I’ve never been able to bring myself to watch it again.
