Mary Cordery is a Canadian who has come to Japan for a report that she is doing at university on Japanese artisans’ skills. She has an intimate knowledge of Japanese culture, and is especially infatuated with artisans. Their skills and appearance bowl her over. University student Wada Takumi is asked by his university professor to accompany Mary. Although he is the son of a third-generation owner of a small workshop, he hates this unglamorous family business. At Mary’s request, Takumi goes along with her on a tour of Japan’s artisans. She is deeply impressed by the skills and spirit of the artisans of kitchen knives, ironware and kimonos that they visit. At first, Takumi shows little interest, and is told by Mary that he does not live up to his name. But he is gradually reminded of Japanese charm and drawn to the innocent Mary. Mary has an objective for coming to Japan. She says there is is someone she must meet. But there is practically no clue to search for this person. The only hint is that he is a Japanese artisan. Who is this person Mary is searching for and why is she trying to meet him so desperately? And Takumi’s dislike of artisans has something to do with his upbringing. Edit Translation
