❤️beautiful though too short GL story in old China

🔆this will not be to everyone's taste as it may seem slow and the characters not very dramatic、 do not be misled by the fierce opening scenes since although there is partly a court battle background most of the story plays out as a gentle comedy of manners with same sex attraction MLs。 I love the characters 〜the eccentric apparently slow-witted magistrate Tao Mo who actually has laser-like intuitive wisdom and the cool intellectual Gu She hiding passion deep inside、as well as their jealous retainers quarelling with each other and the various others on the make around the town and court〜and seeing how they relate and develop and there are law court sub plots as well as the background political intrigue to vary the story〜the final episode is very moving and confirms this as a GL story (maybe most openly so Chinese one I have seen)〜 it is a pity as others say that the series does not continue longer especially given most Chinese dramas are usually 30 episodes at least (maybe for political reasons ?)🎼special mention for the very fine singer of the main theme

Surprisingly good.

I almost gave up after watching the first episode because the MCs character was a bit too timid and stupid. However, I decided to give it a chance and I am so glad that I did because the story got a lot better.
The story mostly focused on the relationship between the two leads but you could also see an underlying plot. Unfortunately, the episodes were too few to fully uncover the mystery. One can only read the novel to satisfy their curiosity.
One of the most impressive things about the show was the cast. Each member seemed to be born for their role which was a very good thing to see. The costumes and makeup were perfectly done which added a lot of aesthetic value to the show. Finally, the acting was also very good and lacked the awkwardness that we usually see in BL shows.
The music was a bit of a disappointment though. I would have preferred each episode to end with a song but they ended with dialogue spoiler of the next episode. The opening theme song wasn't that good also, it was quite forgettable.
The chemistry of the two male leads was clear to see from the very first episode and it only got better as the story progressed. Finally, the last half of the last episode was definitely my favourite. I really loved the wedding disguised as a banquet.
I am sure to rewatch this show in the future.

The end is what we don't ever see!

Before anything else, I always start with; It’s a Chinese BL. And Chinese BL have tons and tons or red tape! Saying that, this is a great BL, the cast was incredible, and the acting was on point.

Everyone points out the low budget effects and etc. but instead of saying how bad some props were, you had to admire how good they did with such limited money. For what I understand from hardcore BL novel readers, the story is very chopped. But this would be obvious since, again, the limited money and censorships. For such, they had to cut many scenes and back stories, but even if you don’t know it (I don’t), they did a great job on explaining it! Originally it was planned to have 28 episodes but ended (censor) with 12 episodes. Even the weeding part was planed to be on the 28th episode.

There are two things that really made me happy: 1) the secondary characters were awesome! They really did justice on the acting and the amount of time they gave them, 2) The ending is a weeding! Even though I wanted to see what happened at the end, for what I could gather, this BL got censor. And if you have seen it or will see it, they really didn’t show anything what you would have seeing in a Thai or Philippine BL (and you know how hardcore they are). For such, they decided to give it a very happy and unexpected ending that nobody (Chinese BL) has done before!

See beyond the low budge and the long political and complex story that they try their best to explained it in a very short (12 episodes) time.

I really enjoyed this BL. It’s just lovely and pure.
