Gah. The plot is such a huge disappointment or maybe I misunderstood who the real protagonist is?

I got intrigued by this drama because it is based on a famous manhwa. A year before the drama got released, Nam Joo Hyuk was in talks of being Haebak so I got more excited. I tried reading the manhwa however there are like 20+ volumes with 30 chapters each and I cannot take it anymore so I dropped reading. I thought the writer and PD will adapt the plot from the manga but they decided to do a spin off in modern times. I crossed my fingers that the drama will still be fine without the sageuk genre.

The drama starts off pretty great but later on the story got dragged with the plot focusing in the human world.

I expected a clash between the deities but all I got is a series of contemplation of Habaek and So Ah whether to let themselves fall in love when they already know that their relationship will be short-lived. There are also lots of cute moments between the two protagonists that I got sick of it. Hu Ye joins them just to shake some things up.

I anticipated to discover the secrets each of the characters are hiding. But by the time the secrets were revealed, I just got more frustrated because it did not cause any major conflict to the story. The actors’ lines were also not that strong enough to give me the ‘feels’. I always felt that it’s lacking.

The only reason that I gave this drama a three-star review is because the final episode was shocking and astonishing. No one would have ever see that coming. I bet the writer submitted that idea and got told to just drag the story to make it a 16-episode drama. The ending also made me realize that the story is not really all about the the gods and goddesses, it is about So Ah – the bride of the water god. Everything made sense because of that finale.

I found the plot interesting to watch this kdrama, especially the back story of Habaek.

Partly, it is a story of gods/deities who are vain, greedy, vengeful, and selfish. Good thing its just a fantasy drama, LOL. They should instead have been depicted as goblins rather than gods.

The way the story developed was quite disappointing for me. Some episodes were engrossing but some were dragging as if they were included just to extend it into a 16-episode drama.

Although, there are two saving graces: the casts' visuals and the superb acting of Im Joo Hwan.

The cinematography is impressive.

Now, I understand the mixed perception.
Overall, I give it a 7.5 rating.

A lackluster drama

Well, this drama was a bit underwhelming, albeit still entertaining. The plot had so much potential, but it's not very well developed and ends up being just average. I wish they had shown more about the realm of the gods and how their society worked, but unfortuntely that remained unexplored, maybe even due to a limited budget, I don't know. The ending is also very predictable and the conflict was resolved in such a simple way I wonder if So Ah really needed to have used her wish for that. Also, the title of the show is barely justified by the story.

I mainly decided to watch this because of Nam Joo Hyuk, but his performance here is not as astounding as in other works I've seen him in, but it's not just his fault as Ha Baek wasn't that deep or compelling. Same for So Ah, not terrible, but not a remarkable character either. I felt they lacked a bit of chemistry, although they do share some nice kiss scenes.

The CGI was terrible and cringe-worthy, which makes me question why they did some swimming scenes with CGI instead of just putting the actors to actually swim.

A pretty forgettable show, I would recommend this only in case you have nothing else to see.

I really had high hopes for this drama. I seen clips on Facebook and wanted to watch this. However, I was disappointed! The chemistry between the main characters weren’t there. It felt forced, the 2nd main leads were annoying especially the female goddess. The characters were extremely immature. The ending wasn’t even good. They made all the characters the same. Immature, snobby, and rude. I was totally bummed. I really wished the storyline had a little more to it. Anyway if you still want to watch it you can on the Viki app.

People make it seem worse than it is.

This show is not a master piece by any means but a lot of people seem to like to complain about this specific show, when in reality there are shows that are many times worse than this but are well liked.

This show isn't really anything special, I am not saying that. But it was a decent watch. I will say that the first three episodes where slow and I skipped through then pretty heavily. It was just something cute to watch at some points and I like stories that have to do with different types of mythology but even that was perfectly explained either.

I enjoyed some of the story lines, like biryeom's and mura's but also found some other plot lines to be unimportant, like the story line with Ja-Ya. I also felt that some plot points that ended up being significantly important, like the one about her father. was under developed and was an after thought used to help along the ending of the show. The ending made some sense, but it felt like it was an after thought and was a bit weak.

With all of that being said to was an okay and mindless watch, something to fill time with. I think as long as you go in with a realistic expectation then it will be a decent watch. This show did have a lot of potential to be something more but this is what we got, so do with that what you will.

So I just finished watching the bride of habaek and I just don't understand where all the hate is coming from. Sure, it isn't an epic drama that deserves a 10/10 but it's still enjoyable at the least. It does not keep you on your toes or on the edge of your seat from start to finish but it had its funny moments and some suspense for the first episodes.
And I actually thought that shin se kyung's and nam joo hyuk's acting was good even though many thought the opposite.
After I read the reviews and comments, I was almost sure that I wouldn't be giving it more than 3 but it deserves the 7, I had lower expectations . It had its slow moments and was not that intense but it was an okay drama.
Many dramas were worse but did not get all this criticism ( heirs, madame antoinette, shopping king louis, warm and cosy, heartstrings, love in the moonlight and so on...).

I was completely disappointed by this after watching the first episode and so I dropped it afterwards.

For those who loved it, I'm sorry for not giving this a chance. But the main reason why I disliked it after its first episode was because it strayed light years away from its original source material.

I have read the manhwa before this came out (and I probably shouldn't have since it resulted with a terrible reaction to the drama) and I loved it. So with the hype (and the poster) going around the internet before it premiered, I had high expectations on it. And it was such a disappointment to finally watch it only for it to deliver such a far off plot.

I was reluctant to continue watching the first episode but gave it a chance. However, its huge gap and differences eventually turned me off to the point of dropping the entire drama.

For one, the manhwa was melodramatic and tragic with less comedy in it. It was nothing like the drama that forces comedy in every "I am Habaek" introductions of the first episode.

The entire premise of the manhwa was far from the one in the drama. For those who didn't know and read the manhwa, here is a list of the differences between the source and the drama (as far as its premise goes):
1. Habaek's bride was supposed to be the sacrifice of her village in order for Habaek to end the long drought. Therefore, anyone could be Habaek's bride, not just So ah (as the drama highlights her to be his destined bride). He did not know who could his bride be until So ah arrived in his world.
2. Habaek was actually a little boy in the morning and his true, older self at night (and there's some background story that explains that).
3. The setting of the manhwa mainly took place in habaek's world and not in the mortal world. There were no "travelling betwen worlds".
4. The manhwa's a romance tragedy NOT rom-com (which has a very different tone).

Those were a few differences but it felt that the drama has robbed the manhwa with its characters and concept and created a whole new story, claiming it their own. It was somehow disrespectful to the writer of the manhwa (as how I saw it) to rewrite the entire plot and leave only the characters. And those who have actually read the manhwa will understand where I'm coming from.

Manhwa Reader's Don't Watch This Travesty

Bride of The water is a tragedy and example of human greed and loss of integrity. For one, the writer for this live action has worked on several famous pieces so I expected some things from this, not a sad piece of garbage with a messy plot, bad characters, and try-hard comedy. I was like, okay they are switching this to modern day...I can deal with that...it turns out I couldn't.

1. The pairing is horrible. Nam Joo Hyuk and Shin Se Kyung have no chemistry together. Nam Joohyuk also does not have a face that screams "water god" either. I would have liked a seasoned actor, one with Charisma and a more mature feel. I praise the actors for playing their roles, with what a mess it was. Props to them in that aspect, but The female lead's character was written so horribly I have to wonder just what the writer and crew were on when they decided to go with them. The male lead too was written so horribly I had to question...this is a god? Really? I am not degrading the actors for their acting, rather the script writers and those with authority who authorized the reality of these characters to occur.

2. From a beautiful ancient world, beautiful costumes, lores, and characters...the term "modernized" ruined the potential the story had. It's just so sad. Do you know how gorgeous Habaek is in the manwha? How beautiful the clothes So Ah wore was? How Beautifully sad the love story between Habaek's parent's were? The political war that tore heaven in two is? And from a beautifully complex, and hurt god that Habaek was...they make him a joke in the live action. They ruined the character of Habaek. They killed Habaek. The first official meeting between Habaek and So Ah was magical. The settings or ancient korea with the lotus lakes and the realm of the gods. How magical it would be if it came to life. Instead what we get is a sick joke of a scene where Habaek is in western like outfit and blue long hair as a god? I laughed my butt off because of how sad this scene was. If they had the ability to make a western Habaek, why didn't they just stick to the original Manhwa version of Habaek?

3. I would not be mad if THIS WAS NOT SO BLATANTLY LABELED AS THE LIVE ACTION OF THE MANHWA BRIDE OF THE WATER GOD! WHY SAY YOU ARE A LIVE ACTION IF YOU CHANGE THE ENTIRE PLOT, ACT AS IF HALF THE CHARACTERS DON'T EXIST, CHANGE THE CHARACTERS INTO COMEDIC JOKES FAR FROM THE ORIGINAL, AND DON'T EVEN HONOR THE ORIGINAL SETTING OF THE STORY? Thanks for telling me you want my money but don't care about honoring the original work.

Bride of the Water god has a big fanbase. They used the fans for views when the live action doesn't even deserve to be called a live action. And god I swear, even Netflix's death note did not change as much of the plotline as this piece of garbage did. I am sad the actors and actresses of this show had to work on this.

If they followed the original story, trust me, this drama series would go down in history. The world of bride of the water god is beautiful. The characters are beautiful. With a skilled and respectful enough crew, they could bring the series to life by developing the characters and adapting the settings and costumes. It'd be on par with Ten Miles of Peach Blossom. Korea hasn't managed to do that yet though. They haven't made a decent historical fantasy costume drama in long time. (I don't count Goblin etc, those are mainly set in modern time).

Jajajajaja.

¿Así que díganme? ¿Para qué sirve un dios sin poderes? ¿Sigue siendo un dios? xD
