Novoland S01 EP01

Feng Yi Tian seems to have been in love at first sight when he first saw Yi Fuling. The actor/actress playing these roles really made the characters come to life!

ep 1 spoilers ahead

Characters:

'The God of Shooting Stars': Descends upon earth once every century. Her birth is easy to spot because shooting stars will fall, and she has a grey birth mark behind her ear.

Star Court/Master of Star Court Xing Ching: Seems to be a mediator between the two Lan Clans

Yinchi: A teacher at star court

Rui Zhu: A country girl who comes under attack literally as she is giving birth. Can shoot needles at pressure points (or it could be poison). mother of the goddess

Blue Eyed Man: Someone the Queen is in love with. He married Rui Zhu because he was too low of a status to marry the Queen. Is a student of the Star Master. Father of the goddess.

Humankind Maiden, Fu Ling/Ling'er: the little girl, all grown up, unaware of her identity

Chishu: Ling'er's butterfly companion

Bai Ting'Jun : Prince of human kind (no wings); seems to be the proper kind of guy who follows the rules and is thoughtful and is described as being 'kind and not overbearing' (I bet he is hiding a darker personality)(come on Ling'er refers to him as 'Brother' second male lead!)

Feng Tianyi: Emperor of the wingkind (which would make him the son of the princess from the beginning...): seems like an aggressive guy with high emotions (and extremely pretty eyes) and more pushy--

1.The show opens up with a brief prologue explaining that the two clans on Lan, a continent, have a long history of war. One clan can fly, given them certain advantages, the other cannot. Finally, they agree to a weak treaty to not attack one another.

2.The next scene opens to a pretty woman in the throws a very painful birth. Outside a man with blue eyes nervously waits. In the distance soldiers race towards them. It seems the man with blue eyes has been expecting this: he pulls a few things and a series of arrows hit these soldiers, but it isn't enough to stop a woman clad in white. She is even more pretty than the woman giving birth, and she is a princess seeking the girl child that has just been born.

3.Incidentally we learn that there is some kind of unsaid history between the princess and man. She seems to be in pain (perhaps she has feelings for him?).

4.The man tries to escape with his wife and child. His wife shoots needles (these could be poison needles or needles sealing pressure points, I don't know). They are stopped by a cliff, and here we learn that the man and princess have a history, that he married the country girl because he had no hope of a future with the princess (or so says the country miss)

5.The princess laughs and points out how happy he is, even having a child. Soldiers attack, and the country miss is killed. The man appears to be heartbroken before grabbing the infant and leaping, it seems, to their death. But the woman doesn't think they are dead. She wants them alive, and sends soldiers to find them.

6.The man visits the Star Pavilion and begs his master, the Star Lord, to help him but his master refuses, maintains that his role is that of mediator, and to not become entangled in the conflicts of the two Lan clans (he also gives us a little history lesson on the star goddess)

7.Man with blue eyes begs for a piece of Shura Cinabar--it will altar his appearance. It seems he will go into hiding....

[18 YEARS LATER]

8.Humankind Maiden Fu Ling is sent a message by TingJun (butterfly messenger) who does not give her the red bean she wanted but instead a dagger, and apologizes he wont be there for her birthday...Ling'er is irritated because the red bean symbolizes longing, and seems to represent her feelings for him (?)

9.Change scene: the star court. Xing Ching is ready to officiate a tournament held annually, the 7 Lantern Ceremony that is between the Wingkind and Humankind. Whoever wins gets to light the lamp. TingJun is here, as the prince of human kind (does Ling'er know?)

10. Feng Tianyi (he has to be the male lead--he arrives late and strides in and I can see him as a perfect foil/ I already call out Tingjun as being the second male lead). he essentially throws in the towel as if to say that the ceremony symbolizes peace and so isn't worth fighting over, just let Ting'Jun light the lantern. This makes him look good however it makes one wonder what his motive is...(come on there is always a motive)

11.In what seems to be a cleverly orchestrated plot, the lantern falls under the weight of Ting'Jun lighting it. Tianyi uses this as an opportunity to explain that the heavens must have been upset with his peaceful choice to avoid combat. Thus, even when Ting'jun assumes responsibility (clearly knowing this is a set up) Tianyi insists that he be punished for going against the heavens (I think the implication is that the two clans are expected to fight one another)

12.Bwahahahaa the star court is not to be taken for fools. The emperor is chastised before they show him what they knew all along: footage of him planning for this incident. This is designed to humiliate him, teach him a lesson (This guy has to be the main lead)

13.Ting Jun and Tianyi have a small confrontation and essentially they go after the other's weakness: Tianyi calls him out for being a mere prince (a.k.a. his mom is in charge) and Ting Jun calls him out for lacking military power (a.k.a. the wing kingdom can't afford to go to war with their small man power)

14.Meanwhile, Ling'er decides its a good idea to see Tingjun and climbs a mountain (I like her already, she's impulsive and not the brightest bulb)

15.(o yea these two are totally going to hook up) She isn't supposed to be on the mountain, and Tianyi is looking for Jade Cave (I have no idea why he is here, and I don't like his costume). She makes up that she is looking for a cave, takes advantage of his confusion, and uses her new dagger to threaten him to help her escape. Instead, he forces her against the mountain, makes it look like they are making out, and humakind soldiers leave (she drops her pretty new dagger...)

16.Ling'er looks pretty angry, and we are treated to the typical 'how dare you' and he plays it off in a cool way, continuing to take liberties that make her uncomfortable because she has to be a maiden of purity (sigh i hope the rest of the series is not like this). When he learns that she is looking for Tingjun he agrees to sneak her into the Flower Chase Festival (they pinkie promise)(she isn't completely dumb she expresses doubt over trusting him but she doesn't have much of a choice). he pulls her into his embrace for absolutely NO reason before strutting off (these kinds of arrogant characters I kind of hope something bad happens to them they just seem really one dimensional

17. OMG this has to be a teen drama, they have an 'elite club' that the emperor is in charge of and I guess he makes guys go through grueling tests to join. it feels like F4 I really, really hope that this drama doesn't go that route...

18.She accepts a special grass from the winged people that is supposed to make her fast enough to break into the star court (Rule 1: never accept food from strangers) this is given to her by a guy trying to get into this elite club

19.She breaks through, but naturally is arrested for breaking rules. Tianyi again sets Tianjun up. The star lords automatically think Tianyi is responsible because, well, he usually is. Ling'er punches a star lord out and she seems dizzy, and is imprisoned while they investigate.

20. The episode ends with her in prison.

_____________
Other than the pretty cast members and interesting opening, this show has not impressed me much. The dialogue has been pretty...meh, it all seems fairly predictable. I don't have high expectations but I hope it improves.
