Amazing music, good acting, cute leads

I watched this ages ago. Thus:
1) I wasn't actually aware of who Joy was at the time and thought "Wow! She can sing." and was completely in awe. Her vocals are fantastic and yes, a quick Internet search told me who she was. Sorry for my ignorance haha.
2) I liked it a *lot* at the time since I was younger and hey, it is still a great k-drama. The main couple was so, so sweet and it had the "typical" events in a k-drama romance-- second love interest + jealousy, moments that are too cute (and cliche) to be realistic or relatable, misunderstandings + bad timing. It may be a bit frustrating to watch because c'mon get together already! but the ending is so fulfilling and rewarding.

I can easily rewatch this and I do find myself having the urge to... just for the warm feels.

I think it's ideal for new k-drama watchers or the audience who likes cheesy (but wonderful) shows but if you're not into romance or music much, I would say pass.

I watched this months ago so on one hand I don't remember too many specifics, but on the other hand, what you remember about a drama months later can really reflect how good or memorable it actually was. So here's what I remember liking:

1) Crude Play. I loved the fictional band in The Liar and His Lover. I loved their friendship and the storyline about their struggle with their company. I also liked their songs and listened to them on Spotify for weeks after the show. They're still on my playlist. (Also, Kim Sung Joo plays the lead singer, which led me to discover his kpop/cpop group UNIQ.)

2) Shi Hyun (the aforementioned Kim Sung Joo) and Soo Yeon's storyline is SO CUTE and I have rewatched their clips on YouTube before.

3) I recall liking Yoo Na's storyline a lot. It was very emotional and I thought Hong Seo Young did a great job.

4) Most disappointing was the leads and their relationship. So Rim (Joy's character) was kind of silly and foolish, and Han Kyeol (Lee Hyun Woo) was a dummy. And then you had to feel bad for poor Chan Yeong because he was totally talented and deserved a chance to succeed.

So I wouldn't say this drama is a waste of time - I would totally watch the Crude Play and Shi Hyun/Soo Yeon parts again.

I was looking forward to this drama, as it is based on a good manga and the lead actor is one of my favourites. However, it didn't progress as good as expected. The first episodes were really good, with the romance developing in slow tempo and the drama being highlighted with the struggles of the inspiring students who want to debut as a band. However, the drama started falling apart after the first half. The romance was not as strong, as the guy constantly made the girl cry, and the girl simply and very idiotically, for me at least, kept coming back. There as a nice love triangle, that, again, couldn't be developed because clearly the girl was obsessed over her first love interest. The performances were okay, but not as good as they could have been, and the songs were nice. So, 4 out of 10.

I'll start with the story of this drama, honestly if you're looking for light romance with a simple story this is perfect, but it wasn't my type of story line, it's repeated and there wasn't anything unique about it, the roles of the main characters were poorly written and for the female character, poorly acted as well, her being the gullible, poor and kind high school student, and him being the cool, cold and a bad boy, the problem with these types of dramas is that it becomes annoying after a couple of episodes, especially her lingering and clinging onto him, she became quite annoying and pathetic , I had the phrase "doesn't she have any dignity?" in my head all the time, I was embarrassed for her, and of course I had the extra thoughts of what I would've done if I was in her shoes, I'd punch him in the face for fucks sake, that's the type of feeling you'll have at the second to third episode, kind of reminds me of heart strings vibes.
As for the acting, who doesn't love lee hyun woo, I really liked him in moorim school, his acting is good, the role sucked though, I didn't like how he was an ass at the beginning and for no certain reason, to his friends as well, taking into consideration that they show you how close they were in the past, he went overboard, but he's bearable, more than the female character, joy.. oh joy, I first saw this idol in clips of her drama tempted with doo hwan, to be honest with you, except for IU in my ajusshi and moon lovers I haven't seen any idol, male or female, including joy who knows how to actually act, I know that directors use them anyway for more views, but it just kills it, she acts like a child, I mean no offense but people should stick to their jobs, but I wasn't expecting anything so I wasn't disappointed, also hyun woo's acting covered it up, as for other characters, I didn't mind the existence of so ri mi (joy)'s friends, they were light, that goes for hang yul ( hyun woo)'s friends as well, except for chan young ( lee seo woon) -I just learnt about his sexual harassment when I searched up his name yikes his career is killed- anyhow, the character was quite annoying, he kept butting in ri mi and hang yul's relationship, instead of a supportive friend I saw an obsessive controlling creep, if you change the soundtrack in his scenes with so ri mi to a horror's movie's background music, my my I'd feel tense, without him hang yul would've been their producer and trust me that would've saved us, many, many episodes, I had a soft spot for CEO Lee, but CEO Yoo was a plain sellswoman, another character I thought was completely useless is Che Yuna, well she was good at being an idiot.
The music was good, the OST's and the songs so ri mi sang were actually good, but the problem with the songs in this drama is that they are all recorded at studio and then used in scenes where she's supposed to sound natural, for example she's singing on the roof and her voice is perfect, all clear without a sign of the air, it's so perfect that it's become unrealistic, what were they thinking, they could've shown us how good she is when she sings on stage or in studio..
Overall, I don't recommend you to watch this, it's nothing good, but if you want to pass time you can use this for some laughs, also if you're like me, if you just want to think about something else, I highly recommend it.

This drama is pretty underrated. Also it is a feel good drama. If at the end of the hard day you want to watch something to pep you up this is a drama for you! This is a multi character drama of the k pop music band. I loved the story and cute moments in the story i still go back times to watch some of the scenes. I liked the music too in this. Story is about a band who the band leader who is so perfectionist that he fakes some of the aspect of the band, it is about the members who wants to work hard and prove them selves and how competitive the world out there is. It has a love triangle of kids and adults. It has many funny moments and heart touching moments. I loved how kang and yoo soo rim's relationship develops. I liked acting of Lee hyun woo in this and after this i watched couple of his drama which i liked. Choi jin hyuk is competitive but towards the end he realizes the true sense of music and protects that essence of music. I think i liked this drama because i like music. It's a journey of many character and how they fail or successes in this world of music and their interpersonal relationship with each other. It's cute !

The liar and his lover ,drama didn't match much with the title ..there is no such big lie in the drama which can create a suspicious love story which I expect with the drama .
It is a slow but can't say a boring story but at same time little bit loose which do not connect emotionally with the character .Drama shows the hardship faced by the celebrity after getting a success to maintain this fame ... It is story of a musical band and their hardship and their love story ...No excitement ,no funny moment ..onething i like about the drama is the last part that is ending of the drama to show happy ending by bringing everybody at one platform.

I started watching this drama after I found out that Lee Hyun Woo and Joy were in it. The plot of this story isn't anything amazing but something I really liked about this kdrama (I haven't watched a lot i'm a new fan) is that the girl is pursuing the guy first. I'm really drawn to dramas like that. I started getting tired of the basic guy is always chasing after the girl. It's more interesting to me when it's the girl pursuing the guy. The way they met was very different to me and I actually really liked their interactions. It was interesting enough for me to continue watching.

The obstacles they faced along the way to me was more then just people getting in the way of them. Yes, there was some of that, but it was also battles they faced with each other and with themselves. It was interesting to me how the male lead (Lee Hyun Woo) came to appreciate everything about the female lead (Joy).

The acting was really good. The friendship groups they all had made this show really heart-warming. The show to me was also sad at times. I can get really emotional so some parts of the show did make me cry. Especially when it came to them talking about struggles they're dealing with. I'm a fan of kpop so this kind of made me think about the idols I admire.

My overall thoughts is that this kdrama is pretty good. The way they met and everything they went through together and how it leads to the male lead finally realizing his feelings and not feeling trapped anymore. How he finally realizes his mistakes and matures enough to know how to take responsibility for it. How his friends helped him through it even if there were some bumps along the road. How the female lead shows her care and how that helps him grow and realize what love is. It was all so heart warming. It was interesting to see how they battled with the struggles they had to face and the jealousy that other people around them had.

It was also more then just that. Something else I want to add is that the growth the male lead has is great. In the beginning he's blinded by his own ego and in a way sees everyone around him as a puppet for his own music. Its not that as soon as the female lead shows up he changes right away. It takes time for him to realize the blessing that has come to him. In the beginning even he is just seeing her as a puppet that he can control to get what he needs. It's also not that he's a bad person. He's gone through things that we get to know throughout the drama that makes him like this. He's stuck in a deep dark hole and just needed a push out of it. This was my interpretation of his struggles and feelings and you might feel a different way but this is what I thought of this drama and the actors.

Boring and long but still kinda fun

I started watching this drama by myself just on a whim while browsing Netflix, I stopped watching midway through because i got bored, I didn't find any of the characters very interesting and didn't care to see where the story was going. Then one day my friend who has no interest in k-dramas said she wanted to watch it because she was curious of why I enjoyed k-dramas, so i said why not.
Then it became more enjoyable because we just made fun of it together and criticized, our favorite character to make fun of was Chan Yeong, it was all his creepy advances to the Fm that we would always made fun of, its also worth pointing out how very clearly uncomfortable she is whenever he makes advances to her, an example being when he hugged her and she not hugging her back making it a very awkward moment and you can see shes clearly uncomfertable, we laughed a lot at that scene specially when they replayed it three times to make it more dramatic XD.
This show also shows how manipulative your superiors can be when it comes to work, and how they'll wanna take advantage of you, as seen with the president lady and ceo who make the characters compromise with their morals for a bottom line (music miming) we had good a conversation about having to draw boundaries when it comes to work. I liked the side characters, her two child hood friends who are always there for the FM, the manager lady and her love subplot with the led vocalist (i ship it) and the other crude play band members.
The music was overall pretty good, my friend specially liked "shiny boy" and jokingly said shes into k-pop know, the cinematography was also pretty good and the story and message weren't too bad.

Over all I wouldn't really recommend it, its just way too long, but if after reading this review you still wanna watch it be my guest. Id say I found it enjoyably nonetheless, my friend and I had a good time laughing at all the drama, and we now have a couple of inside jokes, and we constantly quote this drama all the time, my friend said she had fun but that she would not watch this or any other drama ever again, so make of that what you will.

firstly, this drama moves slower than others. It's not rushed though on the other hand it's not dead.
I appreciate that in a sense, sometimes the story of dramas moves too fast For you to take it all in - so it's a welcome change.

If you dislike drama for the sake of drama and tumultuous relationships then you are in for a pleasant ride. What I liked most about this drama is the fact the main relationship was steady, cute, not controlling and honest. i could have watched them for 16 more episodes as they grew musically together.

something I would have liked to see was a change up on the song performances. I know that writing a song is a difficult process, but having heard them play and sing the same song the entire time made me slightly bored.  Joy's voice was amazing though.

Lovely Love Lie (AKA The Liar and his Lover)

The alternate title sounds racier than this show actually is. It's a music industry story line with a girl in a high school band (think 19 years old) named Yoon So Rim (played by Idol Actor Joy from Red Velvet) and the superstar kpop producer Kang Han Kyeol AKA K of Crude Play (played by Lee Hyun Woo) who meet coincidentally several times and end up falling in love. There's also the base player from the fictional group Crude Play, Seo Chan Yeong (played by Lee Seo Won) who ends up being the producer for So Rim's group. There's some minor love triangle plotting going on, but mostly it ends up about being the trials and tribulations of the musicians - conniving music company execs, dating scandals, and industry scandals galore. Since it is technically a high school drama, it remains pretty firmly on the chaste side of things romance-wise. I feel like the story lost a bit of focus as it picked up various subplots and then dropped them just as quickly in several instances, but it remained cute and entertaining throughout. Even with several hardships thrown in for various characters, it never really loses its upbeat rhythm. Special shout out to UNIQ's Kim Sung Joo as Yoo Shi Hyun, the lead vocalist of Crude Play, and Jang Ki Yong as Crude Play's drummer Ji In Ho. There was never a point when I was watching where I felt like I was wasting my time, but there was also not really a point in the drama where I was overjoyed. This one's pretty middle of the line.

Firstly I wish to say that this show is by no means perfect. In fact I imagine many people will not like it. However for those who give it a chance and can connect it will be a valuable and worthwhile watch. It was a type of drama that made me think and reflect on my own values which is the only reason I rate it quite highly.

While searching for music related dramas I found this and was pretty impressed.

Let’s start with the story. For me it was interesting but also needlessly complicated. Half way through the drama I couldn’t help but think that there was just one too many love interests/ relationships. Plus each relationship was complicated and by episode six/seven I was frustrated enough to consider dropping it. Sometimes though frustration can be good, and this is where the show shines, because I was frustrated because I cared about the story and it’s characters.

The other great part about the story was what it had to say about the music industry and those who pursue a career in music. There were basically two views/ beliefs the characters had. One, music should be perused for love and joy. Essentially you should enjoy making music and not care about popularity, money or success. The second view is that making music is a business and you should be willing to sacrifice the things that you love in order for you to succeed. After all the music industry is a tough field to break into and not everyone can make a living as a musician.

Because of the complexity, it felt like characters had extra depth and I liked the fact that their was really no typical ‘bad guy’. Just a bunch of flawed people who did the wrong thing for debatably the right reason. By the end of the show every character has experienced some sort of character development.

Needless to say the cast of the show were amazing and enjoyable to watch. The rapport between the characters was believable and I knew that the actors were definitely enjoying their friendship. I just loved the clique and their interaction with one another.

Regarding music, I will simply say that it was pretty good and I will definitely listen to it for a long time coming.

The first few episodes were okay, i was starting to get into it and it just got dragged on and boring. The main female lead was crazy and whiney and stalker like (even for a 19? Year old high school senior) i felt no chemistry between the two leads and it felt awkward and forced. The story was all over the place and too many plot holes and not everything was wrapped up in the end, so the ending didnt feel satisfying. Shame, could have been so much better! I actually dug the crude play band and the characters for it!
