How to top an already phenomenal first movie.
Brotherhood of the Blades 2 is one of those rare second movies that I liked better than the first (which also rocked). In this prequel, the younger Shen Lian stumbles upon a larger political conspiracy in the middle of an assignment to eliminate a controversial artist. The plot falls more along the lines of a mystery with just the right number of plot twists and betrayals. While the action scenes are still bloody, intense and masterfully choreographed, there is a better balance between close up lethal swordplay, suspenseful cat and mouse evasions and gripping high speed chases. The plot in the prequel is easier to follow and more interesting to me. The cast is stronger and the characters are deeper and have to grapple with more inner conflicts. The three main characters - Shen Lian (Chang Chen), Lu Wen Zhao (Zhang Yi) and Pei Lun (Lie Jia Yin) have agendas, loyalties and morals that are at times in outright conflict, making them alternately allies and adversaries. Yet they are bound by a certain code of conduct and mutual empathy shared by those who are ultimately just expendable chess pieces. Chang Chen's Shen Lian silently brimmed with intensity from barely suppressed defiance, to lethal violence, to cold calculation and to longing and desire in this movie. Lie Jia Yin as Pei Lun was his perfect foil with his nonchalant mocking insolence and casually deadly innuendo. Their chemistry as both friends and foes was spot on - I could not get enough of them. In the first movie, the third male lead, his sappy love interest and the female lead were insipid superfluous characters. This second movie doesn't have any notable weak links in the cast. In fact all of the supporting characters were exceptionally well acted.
Also two thumbs up for the strong, yet paradoxical female lead character - a brave and independent woman with a voice that will not be suppressed but who yet loves not that wisely. Ever at fault with a damsel in distress, Shen Lian's reluctant yet burning infatuation with her had me squealing with delight. I was shocked however to discover Yang Mi's truly awful real voice - it is thin, reedy and at odds with the strong character she portrayed. She pretty much owes all her success to her voice dubbers and undoubtedly this is why she hasn't graduated to the big screen despite her popularity and success. Still there is something inexplicable about her that connects with all her leading men and Chang Chen was no exception here.
Overall a fantastic movie to revisit, one that is hugely satisfying for any Chang Chen and/or Lie Jia Yin fans suffering from withdrawal after 2019's top dramas.

A Worthy sequel but didn't top the first movie for me
When I finished watching the prequel about 6 months ago, I was immediately jumping up and down in excitement. I rated the first movie a 9.0 (which is high for me). Coming into "Brotherhood of Blades 2", I had high expectations but I didn't end up jumping up and down in excitement.Acting continues to be stella and its strength. The cast is full of veterans. I was mesmerized with Chang Chen in the prequel, and he continues to deliver in the sequel. He took center stage in this movie, surrounded by an outstanding supporting cast. I enjoy the introduction of the character Pei Lun, played by the excellent Lei Jia Yin. His frenemies relationship with Chang Chen's character is a joy to watch. I would have loved to see more scenes between Shen Lian (ML) and Lu Wen Zhao. The introduction of two female characters, Yang Mi's painter Bei Zhai and Xin Zhi Lei's assassin Ding Bai Yi, makes sense to the plot and they are not there just because we need a female presence.
Although there's a tiny romance element to the movie, it's very subtle and lovely. It adds another side to Shen Lian's character without making him go all lovey-dovey and becomes a different person.
I love the hard-hitting, gritty fight scenes. You can see the dedication all the actors put in. There's no flailing, twirling, flying here and there or just standing there to wait for someone to attack you. Each fight scene is choreographed well and each hit is impactful.
However, compared to the first movie, I find the story a little more confusing. There isn't enough time to explain more about the political maneuver behind the scenes, when the majority of the time is spent on Shen Lian trying to run away. Viewers have to really pay attention as a sentence spoken could be the answer to your confusion. I want to know more about Bei Zhai's drawings and their role in the rebellion. What's the backstory between Bei Zhai and the main person behind-the-scene? A 2-hour movie is not enough to answer all my questions. Maybe a drama would do! Oh wait.. there's a drama version now in "Pledge of Allegiance".
Completed: 4/30/2023 - Review #303

When you only live to survive
Even when I finished watching the Brother hood of blade, I don’t feel the urge to write anything. Only after I’m done with Brotherhood of blades 2, which is considered the prequel of the first one, then it gives me some motivation to put down some thought.
In Brotherhood Of Blades 2, our main lead Shen Lian( Chang Chen) was caught in political conspiracy with his assignment to kill rebel painter Bei Zhai ( Yang Mi) , whom he later fell in love.. Later, the story revealed with more plot twists, schemes, betrayals and everyone met their loose ends.
As the same in the first movie, the second one was also packed with so many spectacular action scenes. Those were shot in wide frame, presented in continuous shots, thus it is more realistic effect.
The fighting scenes were also raw and original, this is a truly original Wuxia that your eyes were feasted with tension and captivating scenes.
Also, I still think this part is even better in term of dynamic plot and character developments . The love between our main lead develop slowly, subtle but you can see their eyes communication speak louder than words.
And of course, the success of the movie also lay in the stellar performance of castings : a cold, calculated, but also yearn for love Chang Chen’s Shen Lian; a funny, witty, brave Lia Jie Lai’s Pei Lun, and a vulnerable, but brave and independent Yang Mi’s Bei Zhai.
Overall, this is such a wonderful movie to enjoy and another great movie of Chang Chen

Interesting if unremarkable
A cop caught in the middle of a conspiracy fights to survive.A simple premise, starts off strong and finishes a bit melodramatic and unevenly.
I enjoyed the acting, it looked very pretty and the story was decently written, even if some moments had a bit too much unearned pathos.
There is one exceptional fight scene, while the others are just serviceable. There is at least one case of shockingly bad CG that seriously took me out of the moment.
Overall a solid way to spend a few hours.

This movie should've last longer
This movie should have lasted longer in my opinion. The storyline was just too short. I love both main characters. The ending was great! A life spared. I would've enjoyed this if they made this into a drama series. The visual effects were good for being 2 hours. The sword fighting was excellent. I need to view more of Chang Shen's movies. I watched this before I watched the first one. He has a lot of movies but some have not been released as of yet. Yang Mi I love so there is nothing I could say about her even when I didn't like the "Negotiator".Was this review helpful to you?
