The drama was very promising especially at the beginning. As a lot of rom-com dramas begin, the main leads met bickering at each other. Both the main leads in the present and past met that way. But apart from episode 1 and 40, we don't see the characters in the present time. The story focused on the characters in the past but what sucked was that Luo Fu Sheng, the hero, did not win the heroine's heart till towards the middle of the drama and the drama instead focused on the side characters. When they finally got together there, were hardly any lovey dovey scenes because the story then focus on the family feud and when that was solved, the Japanese spy invaded the story. At the end, Luo Fu Sheng died and so we're back to the present time. In less than an episode, the main leads of the present time fell in love, separated, reunited and decided to get married. So much characters development for the side characters but no character development for the present couple. Seriously, what's wrong with the writer/s? I know Chinese dramas tend to have bad or sad ending but at least they'd usually have some logic to the story. Zhu Yi Long acting as Luo Fu Sheng was just perfect. Too bad the storyline sucked. If you're a fan of Zhu Yi Long then watching this drama is definitely worth it since you can gawk at him playing the charismatic bad boy that is often times cute and adorable and at times badass. The soundtrack is good as well, since there's one sung by Zhu Yi Long.

So the first time I watched this (that is the first few episodes) I actually felt the story was too cheesy and not forget the bad CGI and I actually dropped the drama around 3 episodes in. Afterwards just in case I gave it a chance recently after seeing Zhu Yi Long again in the trailer of Story of Ming Lan and boy I don't regret it. Despite the really bad CGI and sometimes cheesy plot-line, the story isn't really bad. It's actually pretty good. The chemistry between the leads was really good and it was nice to see ZYL in a funny character after seeing him The Guardians. An Yue XI was cute here to and her acting was good. I actually liked her here than in Let's Shake it and The Endless Love. The only regret I have is the modern story (third life) it was far too rushed. I guess they did spend a lot of time on the past ones but I wished we got to see more sweet moments among those two and see them fall in love. It was too sudden for me. Other than that the story was pretty solid for me.

I have a high expectation for this drama to begin with. When i read the title, i hope that it would not turn to usual chinese republican era drama but things just don't work along with my expectation.

The story presented in this drama is typically a triangle love that many modern dramas have showcased. The only thing that differs is the time setting. A third story is written with consistent and good pace. And after that, the story progression seems to become slower. Although the pace is slower, the story and the pace are consistent. The first half of the drama is spent for the love story between the female lead and second male lead so don't be surprised if the appereance of the first male lead is not as much as the second lead in the first half. This drama isn't cringy but it's draggy. There are many plot holes but i still can grasp the story. Sometimes, the logic of the characters are illogical. The story is interesting but it lacks of details and it has quiet a lot of fillers. The ending is quiet good, confusing and rush at the same time. There are too many characters died in the end. The ending for this drama (republican era arc) is just the same with other republican era dramas

The casts' acting is good. I don't have any concern about it.

The music of this drama is quiet pleasing

If you're looking for romance drama with happy ending, i don't recommend you to watch it. But you can give it a try

Excellent melodramatic romance

This show is really, really tropey--misunderstandings, forced weddings, and terrible families abound--and as a person who loves tropes, I had a great time. Tianying and Fusheng are excellent characters and very well acted, and the minor characters (Xingcheng, Hong Lan, Luo Cheng, Lin Qikai, Duan Tianci, etc) were interesting as well. The plot constantly moved forward; there was rarely a dull episode. And of course there's the fact that my preferred side of the love triangle won out :)

Some things this show has include:
-Stolen dumplings!
-Singing opera during a one against many brawl!
-People getting stuck in a cave-in together after running from wolves!
-Tianying saying ACAB and being right about it!
-Slow burn character development, both negative and positive!
-Long lost sisters! and brothers and fathers and mothers!
-Literally so much drama!

I'm only a bit miffed at the last five episodes. Was there a reason to introduce an anti-Japanese espionage plotline that late in the show? I feel like I could have gotten into it if it had been incorporated sooner. As it was, it felt like the Big Bad not being the Xu family was a bit of a sudden swerve--and some of the deaths felt like arbitrary tragedy rather than earned tears.

First of all, I watched this drama because of the name and the cover picture. Like seriously why they gon do me like that huh?
I cried, who the fxxk wrote this drama, i need to slap some happiness into the writer's head.
The name of the drama and the drama is so metaphoric or whateves
Granting you a dream like life, What an Irony, Smh
I nearly brawl my eyes out just because there is always something to cry and get angry about, y'all got to be kidding me.
Everyone died, just everybody, nobody survived, it was so shitty at the end, I wanted to stop but couldn't i just need to watch them die, I didn't come here for nothing.
Ain't re-watching this drama again, no never.

STORY: Just your normal Circle love entanglement, with a bunch of angry scenes and WTF scenes.
ACTING\CAST: They did try with the acting... They really did, haha..
MUSIC: Not bad, i can remember the songs somehow
REWATCH VALUE: I ain't re-watching this heart wrenching drama again.

Thank you...

Start it episode 1 minute 22, finish it episode 40 minute 22 (or episode 36 for better ending...)

The most important thing I should say to everybody who is thinking on watching this drama is… go on, but skip the modern part of the drama. It has nothing to do with the rest of the drama. Really NOTHING. The best way to enjoy this drama is to start from the 22nd minute in the first episode and to watch until minute 21 in episode 40, if you want to be true to the story. If you prefer an open (happy?) ending, don’t watch the last 4 episodes.
Story: I only started this 40 episode drama because I wanted to see Zhu Yi Long. I had seen him in Guardian and he was amazing, and for the same reason as I decided to see this drama I did in the past for True Friend (big dissapointment indeed). So, after haven’t liked his role in True Friend I decided to try again with this. And OMG, he’s amazing in this one.
It’s a melodrama, so you have a lot of characters in 2D, that overact their role and sometimes they do several things nobody could never ever understand. But, the two male leads and the female lead were ok.
Even if it is a long drama, there’s no moment when you are bored (exception done for the present time). All the time things are happening, sometimes you would not understand why the characters are doing them, sometimes you are going to smile because the CGI effects are terribly bad done, and most of the time you would like to hit Xu Xing Chen cause he became a really crazy (and coward) character.
The female lead was ok. I prefered her at the beginning when she was more a “kun-fu woman I do what I want, what I like when I want” than “I need to be saved for any man around”, but, in her defense, with Fu Sheng, they have an amazing chemistry, and she worked well with both male leads. But, sometimes I could’nt understand very well her decisions...
And, on the other hand, you have Fu Sheng… so brave, so affectionate, so so cool… with an adorable smirk smile… you wouldn’t care less that the other characters had no development or kind of logical actions if you had him.
Music was ok… I have no more to say about that.
Rewatching: I’ve been already watching some videos in youtube about this drama, so I suppose I’ll see it again probably in the future, following my own advise not to watch nor the beginning nor the end.
If you do like that, not caring at all about the leads in the present time, you are going to enjoy much more this drama.

Amazing chemistry, slow romance, ROLLER-COASTER STORYLINE.

I'm not a fan of old era or historical dramas and I never start them as well. But since this drama started in this age I ended up starting it and loving it. Major portion of this drama is not in modern era but old one.
IF YOU ARE ONLY HERE FOR ROMANCE THEN THIS IS NOT FOR YOU, there's alot of side stories alongside main plot line and honestly I enjoyed it, I like it when there's stories to side characters as well since it gives you an insight to their life. There was amazing CHEMISTRY between the leads and it was really good. The fl didn't fall for him until the middle of it and it just gave it a more realistic vibe to it than love at first sight, marriage, kids route. It does have a tragic end but in other life they get back together so it's all good (but i lowkey wish they remember what happened in their last life). But the end seemt rushed so I have mixed feelings about it.
If you love a drama that not only have sweet romance. By all means go for it. u won't regret it oh and also it gives an idea about beijing opera and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT.

I watched this drama because it seemed interesting and I wanted to see more of Zhu Yilong after watching Guardian.
Usually I don't like love triangle stories or those where two guys fight over a girl. This time I made an exception and I'm glad that I did. Overall I enjoyed watching this drama though I grew to hate Xu Xing Cheng.
It was hard to watch how the friendship between Luo Fu Sheng and Xu Xing Cheng went downhill and how corrupt and out of his mind Xing Cheng got during the course of the drama. There were many moments where I thought he must come to his senses and that no one could forget a relationship like those of brothers. While I'm not happy about how the script made him that bad I like how Kevin Chu portrayed his character so well. He is capable of showing the depth of a human soul and makes the development of his character convincing.
For at least half the drama Tian Ying has no idea what she really wants which made it sometimes tedious to watch and it had this typical "saying clearly what you want could ease half of the dramatic tension". I hate this in dramas because it makes an otherwise good scene or even story look pretty artificial.
The 40 episodes seem too long for the historical storyline but too short for the whole drama. The main protagonists of the story playing in the present remain blank compared to the historical ones as they only appear in the first and last episode. I wish the script had given them more screen time so they have had a chance to develop. Because they lack this time the ending seems rushed and while it's not a sad end it's not as satisfying as it could be which is a pity.
The setting in the China Republican Era was something new for me but nice to watch.
All the actors did a great job and create a good overall image. The music was nothing special and didn't stuck in my head (excluding the beautiful theme sung by the two main leads).
I would recommend this drama as it does have a nice storyline and great actors that made it a pleasure to watch.
Specially for fans of Zhu Yilong it's a must watch as he have a loveable character here that is among my favorites.

I like some parts of the story .

Story begins with the flash back .Love story of grandma who went to city along with her foster parent to do theater there by the time she fall in love with a man named Xu Xing Cheng who was a very kind doctor because of his kindness she fall in love with him . Another man named Luo Fu Shen who was Xu Xing's childhood friend and a police man fall in love with her ,so basically a love triangle and it was not easy going love story. When Xu Xing proposed her and she accepted him then twist of the story had started . Due to a reason she broke up with him and he crazily wanted her but all the time she avoided him and try to stay away for him . As time passes she and Luo Fu started came near as a friend ,their relationship was cleaned and he misunderstood them and change into evil person. So basically writer change a kind person into a evil person so we did not felt bad for love triangle when both the persons feeling was genuine. I would not unfold the whole story as it would spoil the mood.
The girl who was telling a story of grandma was dobbleganger of grandmother's face and to whom she was telling a story was dobbleganger of Luo Fu Sheng face so we assumed that they were recarnated .
And his present love story was his finacee already dead and for many years he didn't love any other girl and he confused that he loved her or not because his fiancee exact looked like her and he didn't hurt her so he left her.
Starting flashback story was good and rest was just okay.

Agreeably surprising

It was pretty good, despite a rather sad ending. It’s a story full of surprises with events that we really can’t predict, there are stories of couples, family stories and much more! We attach ourselves to the characters and follow them in their adventures. I also really liked the actors, they were very talented and I really liked Eva Cheng, Zhu Yi Long and di Na. I have never been bored and that’s why I recommend this series to all people who love historical series with a mixture of action and romance <3

I really liked this drama because of the chemistry between the two main leads and the fact that at ep 39 and 40 I cried because of the main male lead dying and the two main leads being together at the end in modern world. I really recommend this drama to anyone who likes a deep chemistry in a relationship. The only downside is what happened to Lan Lan? She just suddenly disappeared. I've got bad memory so even if Lan Lan died I would've known. Also, to fit everything that happened in the modern world in the eps 39 and 40 is a bit risky. It all happened so fast. If it ended at 41 or something so that they can really get to know each other and develop feelings then its perfect. Overall my review isn't that amazing and over detailed but I like this drama not worth watching again since it's really long but I recommend watching it!

Zhu Yilong as Badass? If you fans, you need to watch this!

I never thought I will finish this drama in one go (dedicated weekend).

Story, its from novel adaption and as my predict this drama full of 'drama'. However the story is reasonable in someway.
If you are a fans of Zhu Yilong, you definitely need to watch this drama!
Why? Zhu Yilong as Badass who will protect his girl with any cost, and his portrayed as so COOL Luo Fu Sheng!
OST also so good, I really enjoy my time watching this! I laugh and cry so much.

Thank you Zhu Yilong!
