The drama follows a woman Sumiko Saegusa who has to endure many hardships and obstacles yet never loses her faith in herself. In the chaotic situation following the war, she has to work as a prostitute to feed her family while she has a dream of becoming a schoolteacher. She meets a young doctor with whom she falls in love, but their relationship doesn't survive.
