Twelve-year-old Mei meets Jie, a new student at her school. Both of them are lonely and reclusive and feel like outsiders in their own lives and befriending one another, they form a bond and run away into the mountains. They are leaving in search of that piece of the puzzle missing from their lives - only to find that, perhaps, they have been the missing pieces to each other's puzzle all along. Unique perspective of a sweet story that keeps the integrity of the book. Beautiful cinematography with cute quirks (think, Amelie or Pushing Daisies) that don't feel gimmick-y. At first I thought this was just a cute film, but since watching it last year, it's resonated with me and has become a top-ten favorite. It makes you remember what it's like to be in middle school, and how vulnerable an age that is. Quite beautiful, though yes, I wish it were longer!

This film definitely seeks a wider non-Asian audience with its many cross cultural references, the main one being European art. Van Gogh’s Starry Night is an important part of the movie and plays an important part in the narrative.

Xu Jiao was great as Mei and Eric Lin was also good as Jay.
Starry Starry Night is a sweet and simple story of adolescence, personal development and innocent love.

This movie is filled with rich visuals. Visual effects like paper animals and three legged elephant have connection with characters’ emotions and that adds extra charm to this movie.
There isn't anything more to tell about this movie. Its just beautiful...simple yet effective.
