Hiding in plain sight.

A group of eight wicked villains converge on a gorgeous, dangerous snow capped mountain in a race to recover a long lost hidden treasure they have schemed and murdered for. The almost mythical hidden fox is said to guard the treasure. Young disciples Gui Yi and Qing Wen find danger and intrigue around every corner. In addition to this shadowy hidden nemesis, they find themselves pitted against their masters and even each other.

I wouldn't call The Hidden Fox an adaptation of Jin Yong's "Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain" (雪山飞狐). It is more like wickedly good fan fiction inspired by the original wuxia masterpiece. This has resulted in very polarising reactions to this movie. Critics lament the loss of the spirit of chivalry and that the complex conflict between the main opponents is dumbed down just another revenge story. I am a huge fan of the original work that is defined by the sheer perfection in the way the story ends at the absolute peak of emotions and suspense. To me, it is Jin Yong's most brilliant and unforgettable ending. At the same time, the after openly invites invites speculation and innovation. That is what the writer intended. This production takes up that challenge and while it falls short of exceeding the original masterpiece, the storytelling is still very, very good. It is very suspenseful, action packed and thrilling with a few dazzling twists that delivers an innovative and cohesive alternate take on original story. Is it ultimately hollow because it comes at the cost of the spirit of the original? Yes, perhaps. But it is still a very entertaining way to pass a few hours.

The other great thing about this is that it is a Lu Yang production. I am a huge fan of his gripping and stylish visual storytelling that is heavily laced with action oriented fight scenes. Naturally as a web movie, it is not at the same level (or budget) of his famed Brotherhood of Blades series. Nonetheless the well choreographed action sequences don't disappoint and are as gripping, brutal and violent as expected of a true blue martial arts movie. Each of the eight villains' hidden secret martial arts technique lends an extra layer of imminent danger and uncertainty in outcome to each deadly encounter. Yes there is some use of slow motion but such well designed and viscerally satisfying fight scenes are an increasingly rare treat these days.

This movie may enjoy a higher rating if they had changed the Chinese title from Jin Yong's original 雪山飞狐 although that may have risked accusations of plagiarism considering how easily recognizable the setting, characters and main plot points are. Even if you love the original, watch it with an open mind and allow yourself to embark on a thrilling hunt for treasure that is hiding in plain sight. 8/10.

Excellent Movie

As someone who never read the book (honestly, I didn't even know there was a book to begin with), I really enjoyed this movie!

One night, I was looking for a movie to watch while I did my routine nightly walk on the treadmill and stumbled across this movie on iQiyi. I will start off by saying I had zero expectations and boy, did this movie exceed my expectations!

I felt the most important thing to mention is that there was a background story, and an ending that will tie up all the loose strings nicely. All of your questions will be answered (well, most of them anyway) and you will walk away extremely satisfied with the ending, which is something I can't say about a lot of movies lol.

I've never seen the main actor or actress before but I thought they were both extremely well-casted and were excellent in their roles. The main actor reminds me of Ron Ng (an actor from HK). The lead roles both had amazing control of their facial expressions and I could tell what emotions they were feeling in the scene just by looking at their face. The action/fight scenes were all really well-done too. I'll be on the lookout for more dramas and movies from these two, that's for sure!

Overall, I would highly, highly recommend this movie!! It won't disappoint and the story will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Not A Classic Remake, Just Another Chinese Action Flick

Average movie, almost nothing in common with original novel

First of all, if you have read the original Jin Yong novel and are expecting this movie to follow at least 60% of the plot, then don't, A LOT of things and premise have been modified although they retain the character names.

I came in for the producer Lu Yang, as a standalone movie, I think this can be watched as an average Chinese action flick, almost everything is average and to fill in your wuxia craving, and the only well known actor to me is Ray Lui of HK 80's wuxia camp.

Personally not recommended, the quality is farrr below Brotherhood of Blades by Lu Yang years ago, and it has almost nothing to do with the Jin Yong novel except borrowing the characters and background, but it's up to your own tastes.

Zhao Hua looks so like Wang Talu )!

An interesting story about revenge, in the spirit of chinese fantasy) At first, things move very quickly , not as usually in Chinese series or movies , and a little incomprehensibly, but then it becomes interesting. Zhao Hua Wei looks like Talu Wang)) the whole movie I compared how Talu would play this role ahah they are very similar in acting too ... but the actor played well, with feeling))
the story not ordinary bc u curious a half movie , which side will take Hu Fei ,and i was surprised that at the end he played smart to quarrel enemies among themselves )
the end of the story don't really the end so I think the story should have a continuation.. i hope )) will cool if it were made into a series )
