i didn't like this movie - there was little point to it. the description doesn't begin to explain how messed-up, these two r and i know that cousins sleeping together isn't incest per-say, it might be frowned upon and not encouraged, but i've heard of cousins marring - so sex between cousins isn't that shocking and Not the "messed-up" part - everything that happens cause of their relationship, and how they treat each other, let alone people they in a relationship with, is the Messed-up part. from the sec Naoko knows Kenji is back in their aunt's house - in their home town, she goes to him with an agenda (that's pretty obvious) whether its to get him to impregnate her, or just to recapture the sexual bliss of the past, i until the end aint sure. but she for sure isn't that happy about her intended groom, let alone the marriage.
ironically the first meeting between them - u feel that Kenji doesn't like Naoko, it almost feels like he addicted to her and doesn't like his addiction. maybe as he pointed out, he felt guilty and dirty cause they were cousins. while she was in-love and seems like, has never gotten over him...
usually i enjoy slow-paced movies with almost no dialogue and long pauses - here i was bored. the sex was animalistic and not titillating in the least - always felt like they weren't really enjoying themselves - but like addicts they just kept at it, cause of some "call of nature" - coming together time and again cause of that "need" but never reaching the "high".
the dialogue that existed - especially where Naoko got on her soap-box preaching / justifying the things she was doing and why it was right - like the marriage - like the need to get pregnant - like her fixation on Kenji and how it was cause they were blood-related, everything seemed contrived and empty. and all the reference's to the natural disasters, was all the more infuriating considering the suffering of others - compared to this self-involved human - who was living a good life, compared to lives - whole families obliterated...
the ending like this whole movie, is about these two messed-up people, she finds a way to get out of the marriage even though her leaving Kenji , one would think she matured and knows Kenji will never really be ok with them being together, cause they related - so she realizes this and will move on - Nope - she finds a way to get out of her marriage and gets back to the original sexual relationship with Kenji... this lead to a happily ever after(?) or another child that will not know his father(?!?) - idk. and that's why this felt pointless - there was no growth. no promise of a future... so No - i didn't like this and its for sure a one off
