A cliché done right.

My Unicorn Girl proves how clichés can be entertaining if they are done properly. I started watching the drama with slightly low expectations, I expected it to be another silly and overly cheesy rom-com and guess what, that's exactly what it is. And that's exactly why I loved it so much.

Honestly, the drama is full of clichés - we have prosopagnosia, cross-dressing, fated love, a questionable amount of accidental kisses etc etc. But they somehow made all these clichés work. The drama never pretends to be something brilliant, it is as simple as possible. What saved the show with its mediocre at best plot, was definitely the chemistry and the acting of the two main leads. I didn't know I was into such cheesy romance stories but now I watched this and I started doubting myself. The drama somehow makes you root for the leads, you want them to be together, you wait for each scene of them with excitement, you smile like an idiot whenever they do something cute and you can't help but feel happy when they tease each other. They make your heart flutter with their innocent, playful love interactions. They are your daily dose of happiness.

The main leads, as individual characters, were also very entertaining to watch. Wen Bing is absolutely one of my favourite male leads ever. He is michevious, extra playful, pretends to be cold-hearted but is actually a small ball of fluff inside... he was just too adorable. God bless Darren Chen for accepting this role, it suits him perfectly and I must admit, I kind of fell in love and I don't know how to recover. Sang Tian was a cutie and she actually looked like a boy, but they should have probably made a different decision about her lipstick, it was a bit too obvious, lol.

Overall, My Unicorn Girl is an amazing show especially if you're looking for something more light-hearted. I mean, it's not perfect, it's a bit far from perfect, but it's good enough. The plot not always makes sense, but the chemistry between the leads is worth seeing. I'm not a fan of Chinese rom-coms, but I did enjoy this one a lot and was always excited to watch more episodes. I'm a bit sad that it's over actually.

Cute, cliche, & cheesy

Likes: Darren Chen looks super cute and did a really great job at making a cheesy script a lot less so. It's a breeze to watch.

Dislikes: Do you like xtra cheese in your dramas cuz you're gonna get it in this one. The FL. She was miscast IMO.

Every cliche romcom scenario you can think of will be in this drama with plenty of cheese and corn, and yet...I still finished all episodes. ..and it's because of Darren Chen. I remembered him from Meteor Garden, but wasn't a fan or anything until now. Honestly, this drama had so many lame cringeworthy scenarios that made me either laugh at the stupidity or gag from the cheesiness, but it would have been a lot worse had it not been for DC. He somehow made most of the cheesy lines charming and cute and oh man, those gazes! Tingles. hahahaha. And he was able to create that underlying tension with the FL who in my opinion was as bland as they come.

The main problem I had with this drama was with the FL. She was entirely miscast. It was so obvious that she can't skate and can barely lift a hockey stick, yet we're supposed to believe she's this skilled hockey player that can magically get into a hockey team? I can overlook a lot of things, but when the central theme is about hockey...you need to make sure you cast someone who can sell it. And she doesn't. She also adds nothing to her character. Like no personality whatsoever. I could see any other actress playing this role.

But these two did have some chemistry and there were a lot of scenes with just the two of them so I did enjoy that aspect. Also the side stories weren't that bad either. There were a lot of things that didn't make sense to me, but that may be contributed to the fact the the subs weren't that great. Overall though, it's a light hearted drama that is easy to watch mainly due to DC, but be prepared to overlook the major flaws.

Cute, Cheesy...makes me feel more single than usual :')

Story: Y'all this drama reminds me of those crappy american christmas movies that I somehow end up watching anyways even while knowing it's pretty cliche. BUT this drama is a lot better than those movies. Although the plot is very cliche, I didn't drop the drama nor cringe at any scenes(maybe a few but not like a bad bad cringe) in fact, some of the scenes made me smile like an idiot at my computer screen. I think what I appreciated from this drama is that even though it is a cliche drama, the story included the stories of the supporting characters as well and was more than just the romance but also the teamwork part of the story. It's a very soft and light drama with not many ups and downs but still has a climax to it?
Acting/cast: Honestly if the drama was cliche and had bad acting, I would probably skip through the scenes like I do with many dramas(it's a really bad habit tbh) but i think the great chemistry between the leads made up for it. I liked that Wen Bing wasn't the typical controlling-cold-for-no-reason-and-became-soft-afterwards main lead. I also liked how nice and kind-hearted Sang Tian was. Another worthy mention is that besides the few pecks from the main couple, there was a pretty decent kiss at the end. Most kiss scenes in cdramas are kinda just either 2 peck in 40 EPISODES or a prolonged peck which is supposed to pass for a 'kiss' but personally....no, I'm sorry, I need more juicy content :).
Music: Didn't pay much attention to the music but seeing as it did not traumatize me or made me go like 'huh?', I'd say it was pretty solid.
Rewatch value: The only reason why my rewatch value is so high is because I don't know if it's just me but I can't find it in me to rewatch heavy dramas, you know like the ones with a big plot twist? Since i already know what's going to happen, it's not as interesting or exciting to me. Somehow, I can always rewatch soft and light dramas like this though. It's like I'm watching it to smile and puppy-eye the main leads and their cute love story.
Overall: At the end of the drama, the only thought that's circulating through my mind is that I want a boyfriend who appreciates me like the way Wen Bing appreciates and loves Sang Tian.

What were they thinking ??!!

Ok, let me start by saying that i watch a lot of fluffy shows so i know what to expect but this show i found soooooooooo annoying i cant tell you how much .
The plot line is a girl pretending to be a boy so she could play hockey her roommate knows all a long she's a girl and doesn't say anything to her and just enjoying to tease her most of the time all the while she thinks no one knows about her big secret.
And of course they start to fell in love .
So can someone please tell me how is it possible to drag this out until episode 20 while all long she is wearing makeup i know it is not real life but that is just stupid and during this time they kissed 4 times so what does she think is going on , maybe his gay mmmm
No it cant be it is Chinese show after all.
So I'm thinking why oh why they had to write such a stupid plot line.
I know i am in the minority here and a lot of people really liked this show but for me it was a total west of my time i didn't find it sweet and fluffy i just found it really annoying .
So no i wouldn't recommend this show to anyone god knows there is plenty of new shows to watch now which are much better then this one and still sweet .
Sorry for the rant but this one was just it for me i couldn't keep quite because it felt the writers were thinking we are all a bunch of silly girls with no common sense what so ever.
So please do me a favor and skip this one .
I promise you will thank me for that.

AMAZING

This drama was very cliche but it was done in a way where it felt refreshing. For once we didn't have over the top drama, or nasty love rivals and not even an overbearing mother. We only had our main leads creating a strong bond. Something that i loved was the fact that normally when the girl pretends to be a boy we have our male lead kept in the dark and it ends up with a lot of people knowing it but him, but in the case of this series our main male lead found out pretty quickly.

The ending was worth watching and waiting for

Our main leads definitely made this show even more worth watching. Darren chen is an amazing actor and this is the first time i see him act and let me tell you something i loved his facial expressions throughout the show. Sometimes i found myself replaying a scene just to see his expression. This is also the first time i see sebrina chen and she also blew me away with her incredible acting.

Loved the ost especially "Be there with you" by Deanna

If you're looking for something light with little to no drama then you should consider watching this amazing drama.

THE PERFECT DRAMA

Just where do I start? Although many people just by seeing the trailer would've thought "Oh it's just another skate into love." ( It's fine don't deny it we all have) IT IS NOTHING LIKE SKATE INTO LOVE ITS WAYYYYY BETTER! Starting with the story, many of u said it was cliche, okay but I the story is quite cute and realistic and I don't think cliche is the word to describe bc cliche is for dramas like intense Love ( don't misunderstand I watched it and I love that drama too) The story was cute adorable and I don't think I would do anything to change it! Next Characters, literally love each and every one of them, couldn't imagine the story without a single one of them! WEN BING is my FAVORITE! By far my most favorite character played by Darren Chen-no my FOREVER FAVORITE! The story was so sweet no unnecessary misunderstandings or evil mother or evil clingy ex! Mother may be tough but she melts in a minute Okay? The cast: OMG CANNOT SEE ANYONE ELSE PLAY THESE CHARACTERS OTHET THAN SEBRINA AND DARREN! Honestly even though it's highly unlikely I really hope we have a season 2 (not bc of a unfinished ending, bc it was a happy and cute and satisfying ending!) C-dramas are just sooooo awesome! Wen Bing is a character I will remember for life! MY UNICORN GIRL thank you for making my life more lively and I will miss you a lot! Although it's just a drama and the characters are fictional I just feel like their close to my heart and I would prefer this fictional world than these heartless humans!! (Sorry not u guys..just mean like how people are acting in this pandemic) If there is any W Two worlds lover The Romance Of Tiger And Rose lover then this drama is definitely for you!!! I hope to see you in a season 2 Wen Bing and Sang Tian! Love you <333

If you’re looking for a story, there’s none. If you want character development and interesting personalities, again, not here.
The hockey aspect was poorly used with little research on the sport, I didn’t really get to feel the intended brotherhood between the members of the team or the suspense of competition. The cross-dressing thing was not believable at all... and the characters seemed to have only one expression, the FL is startled and the ML just mischievously half-smiles at her.
Basically Darren Chen’s smile might be the only reason to watch this drama.
It can also completely empty your head but wasn’t good enough for me to watch it fully so I skipped most of it.
I’d say it’s a drama you can binge watch while pressing the “+30sec” button, while you’re waiting to find a better one.

a really lighthearted watch for those of you who want a break from heavier dramas

TBH I had really low expectations going into this, especially after watching the trailer, but EP 3!! Ep 3 sold it for me.

I liked how funny and lovable the characters were, and even if they were decade-old cliches, they were still bearable. Plot-wise, there was nothing too complex or outstanding to be worked with, but I think the cast chemistry really brought everything together. I LOVED how our main couple had their share of adversities to face, and also chances to prove their comradeship. And I also liked how their romance wasn't forcefully in-your-face, it felt very natural and sweet. They had a healthy relationship, and I am SOOOO glad that they had utmost faith and trust in each other. I didn't quite like the conflict in Ep21, I didn't quite understand Tian's decisions and reactions and the whole buildup of the conflict in that ep. Glad it was resolved super fast though. Also, I really liked the pace of the drama. I don't have much patience watching dramas, but the plot moved forward pretty quickly, so kudos to the director for that.

Acting
I am very very familiar with Chen Yao's work, Darren Chen's not so. And although its a pleasant change seeing CY take on more humorous roles, I didn't think this was her best, especially after watching her performances in the WuXin series. Still, Sang Tian is sooooo cute and enjoyable to watch. As for Darren, I really didn't get his appeal prior to Wen Bing, and I wasn't really sure if they'd make a good match. But colour me surprised! He fit Wen Bing to a tee. And it's quite fun to see how different he is as Wen Bing and as himself in the BTS.

Music
10/10 The whole soundtrack is amazing. My favs might be Crazy for You and 温柔的盔甲. The lyrics for the slow ballad at the end of Ep 1 >>>>>>> I cannot stress enough how happy I am that the soundtrack compliments the drama. There are so many examples of songs being completely out of place in a scene and I'm so glad this show doesn't fall victim to that.

Overall, this drama is perfect if you want a lighthearted romcom without much angst and if you don't mind some suspension of belief.

Cute, cheesy & clichéd but good if you're looking for a light-hearted drama

What I liked:
---The ML and FL are super cute together, and the way that he looks at her and treats her will make you go "awwww".
---There's a second male lead, but no love triangle / misunderstandings that drag out the plot
---I actually really liked the pairing of Meng Na and Sang Tian's brother.

What I didn't like:
---There were a few plot holes / instances that didn't make sense to me even bearing in mind that this is a drama where ridiculous things happen
---I feel like towards the last few episodes, they just threw in conflicts to further the plot / keep going and then they were resolved so easily that it was kind of anti-climatic. Literally EVERYTHING happened and got resolved in the last few episodes and then you get your happy ending, but it just feels really unrealistic.

*SPOILER DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED*

His illness is cured, the university gets a female hockey team, the mom was super disapproving and then just agrees to let them date after one conversation? It's all too cheesy. Also the grandma reveal was so random and unnecessary.

Cute drama, but I'm not sad it's over.

I've seen better cross dress dramas

In the beginning, I was quite hooked on the drama because of the funny and cute moments between the two main leads. However, as the story progressed, I started to want the drama to be over already. Not only did it start to get boring, but the cute moments just started to get super cheesy and cringey to the point that I had to skip some of them and end up dropping the whole drama itself. I honestly was more interested in the coach and Wen Bing's uncle's relationship than the main couple oddly enough haha.
And maybe this is just by preference and based on what I've seen in past cross dress dramas, but I wasn't really into the whole knowing from the very beginning he was a girl but just decided to keep silent about it until the end. For me, I just get uncomfortable when Sang Tian gets uncomfortable whenever Wen Bing gets super close to her flirtatiously or whatever not even aware that he knows she's a girl. I usually like the cross dramas where the guy finds out she's a girl in the beginning (with the girl aware he knows) and then throughout the drama he protects her identity from being exposed. Pretty much like the drama "You're Beautiful". But like I said, that's just a preference not everyone cares what way it would be so.
Overall, I don't think I'd watch it again.

Amazingly good...

It's not a review... It's my immediate reaction after I finished watching the drama...
After My Girl, I couldn't find something good enough to please me... I dropped a lot of dramas in the last 2 months... And finally I got this one... Yes...I admit that it has many cheesy scenes... And some of it were predictable as well... But the good part is... It wouldn't bore you ... It will just make you smile foolishly for the entire time...no sad episodes... No unlikable characters... Everyone had their own reasons and a perfect happy ending...
The best part is Darren Chen.... The FL was good as well... Of course there were a few loopholes but I don't mind as long as its enjoyable....
Don't give a second thought... Just go for it

I really liked Hua Ze Lei in meteor garden so i wanted to watch him as main lead, i found him as Wen Bing really fascinating. I really liked how the female lead was shown strong instead of vulnerable. Its not like any regular drama.
You can even consider it a modified BL as Tian Tian is acting as a guy. I really loved the story, acting and production. There is a perfect balance of fun, romance and drama. I laughed alot, I was smitten by the sweet moments and smile of darren chen(Wen Bing). I might as well watch it again couple of times which i rarely do. If you want to watch sth interesting, different then typical strong rich guy falling in love and protecting weak poor girl type drama; you should definitely go for it.
