The story of Hayama Misa, a down-on-her-luck free-lance writer, leaving her unhappy life in Tokyo as she takes part in the Shikoku Pilgrimage as a lone walking pilgrim. It has been said that if a pilgrim completes the pilgrimage by visiting all 88 sacred places, his/her wish will be fulfilled. Four weeks into her supposedly “soul-searching” journey, Misa is in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, still unsure about herself and what she wishes for, and even becomes a victim of a thief, taking what little money she has left. Soldiering on, she stops by a free inn for pilgrims, run by Kimura, a kindly old lady. There, she encounters other male pilgrims: Goto and Nakamura. Misa, who has been lied too often by people she trusted in the past, learns that even pilgrims lie to other people. “There is no human being who does not lie…Everyone has different reasons why they do the pilgrimage,” Kimura says to her. Is Kimura also hiding something behind her cheerful smile? Will Misa be able to find herself and learn to trust anyone ever again? (Source: earthcolors) Edit Translation
