Can Minori avoid a nervous breakdown? All the people surrounding her refuse to express their feelings and emotional boundaries. The resulting everyday life is characterized by ruthlessness: Even friends reduce each other to their appearance and shamelessly take advantage of each other. Minori runs against this by attacking ignorance whenever she encounters it, whatever the consequences might be. Ninomiya Ryutaro is one of the most radical young voices in Japanese cinema. With Minori, On The Brink, he takes a resolute and inventive stand against the cinema of complacency and against social stagnation. (Source: NipponConnection) Edit Translation

Why Is Minori So Angry?
Minori is pretty and popular, lives in a beautiful wealthy country, earns enough money with a relaxed job, has good friends, gets supported by her family, and so forth but she is so angry, having ugly fights with assholes, even with family & friends. Why?Ok, she was abused by her father, but it was a long time ago, so why doesn't she makes her own family and find peace, like Sachi in 'Our Little Sisters' (2015), like many other characters in J-doramas and movies?
The thing is this: She has a social awareness, so it's not only about her father's abuse, it's about everyday abuse and discrimination. She's well aware of the dark side of her beautiful country:

I just hope instead of ugly useless personal fights, she'll find angry women and men like herself, so collectively fight for social change.

Everyone is useless.
Minori does not shy away from telling what is on her mind. She never takes part and awkwardly laughs and smiles at someone's terrible views and jokes. However, she keeps questioning the way people around her behave and think. To her, the world makes no sense. Minori is fed up with everyone and herself, too. She doesn't know if she wants to live differently. But people keep trying to let her know what would be good for her. They label her, put her in boxes, and often don't really care about her opinion and feelings. There is so much going on inside her head, you can literally feel how she is about to explode. She wants to be helpful, be a good friend and not depend so much on others. Someone wrote in their review how her not smiling throughout the film affected their film experience and funny enough, it made me watch and enjoy this film even more. Minori, On The Brink, is a film that depicts society so well in just conversations and silences. Minori never calls herself cute, Minori wants to be left alone. Minori might be depressed. Was this review helpful to you?
