Newly married newspaper reporter Xia Yin moves into her husband’s apartment, but can’t unpack because of a broken lock; her colleague, Lu, suddenly commits suicide; her supervisor at work often rejects her articles. Xia Yin is seemingly walking on the edge of life as everything appears to go wrong, marital problems arise and career insecurities grow. Can Xia Yin find a way to break through these crises? The film focuses on exploring women’s lives in contemporary China, rather than simply suggesting resolutions. Xia Yin wants to cover stories involving industrial pollution or deportation due to rapid urban development, but her efforts are constantly hindered by her bureaucratic boss and husband, forcing her to find a new approach to make her voice heard. The film reveals the intertwined burdens of marriage, pregnancy and career goals modern Chinese women experience, metaphorically expressed when Xia Yen finds herself trapped in a village reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. Social issues such as censorship, bureaucracy and indiscriminate gentrification are also explored. Will Xia Yin be able to navigate her way through? (Source: SIWFF) Edit Translation
