After Toyotomi Hideyoshi dies, Tokugawa Ieyasu arranges various political marriages to strengthen his position. Fearing that other feudal lords would join forces with him to wrest power from the Toyotomi, Hideyoshi's favorite vassal, Ishida Mitsunari, moves Hideyoshi's underage son, Hideyori, to Osaka and urges other feudal lords to accompany him. However, they refuse, opting to stay in Fushimi, where Ieyasu is. When Maeda Toshiie, Hideyoshi's trusted man whom Mitsunari relies on, also dies, feudal lords driven by dislike and suspicion of him band together to defeat him.
