Weirdly enjoyable mess

Captivated, by You is a misleading title coupled with that poster gives you all the feels of a BL. Nothing of the sort. Actually it is very difficult to pinpoint the exact genre. Why? Well, let's see....

The drama follows two high school boys, in two different towns, in two different schools, with different experiences and interests. They have absolutely nothing in common save for a moment their literal paths crossed and one boy took a photo of the other one being bizarre on the other side of the road. And they are both cute. That's it!

When you say school drama, the first item on the producers' list is bullying. So there is some of that of course! The boys' reactions to it are different; while one is immune to it and does not pay attention, the other one creates a repulsive and scary character in order not to be bothered again.

The drama has a strange structure: it keeps jumping back and forth between the characters and up and down the timeline so pay attention while watching. Everything is strange about this drama: the weird book they keep quoting (does it really exist?), side characters' stories out of nowhere when even the main characters' have not been developed correctly and of course the total absence of adults! That is often the case in school dramas and I find it fascinating; the kids are left alone to fend for themselves.

At the end of episode three, there is an amazing trailer for a fake horror movie only japanese can make and looking mighty real and convincing! I almost looked the advertised "movie" up!

And despite all this strangeness, it was a great little drama, leaving you wanting for more! The characters were likable, the actors excellent, the music was really good and the overall production was high value. And I want more!

Two different lifestyles in one story

This show was quite enjoyable even if you didn’t understand it. I never read the manga so majority of the time I was confused, but it did clear my confusion at each episode. The whole story is based on two characters Hayashi and Nikaido, who love both completely different lives one is misery and one is happiness and kindness. Hayashi lives a normal life where he attends an all boys school, but helps out other people in his storyline from him becoming a model for a guy who needed someone to be it for a art contest and even contributed to the art even though they lost they still were friends, Hayashi and Ema being friends, but also not friends from the first time they were seen together was in middle school where Hayashi didn’t want to play baseball anymore and Ema picking Hayashi for the cute person from his card for a scavenger hunt so every time they saw each other Hayashi would ask him if “he’s cute” even while being in a panda costume. Hayashi also is friends with Matsuya ever since they both found out they both love the novel ‘Iron and Iron’ and even met a new friend named Arakawa and the last thing from his story was him helping Yamada out when he was getting bullied by Masahiro by giving him the book Iron and Iron to give him confidence and even poured coffee on his bullies head. Next, is Nikaido’s story which I feel so bad for him, he lives a miserable life ever since a incident happened when he was in middle school which was since he was so popular for his looks a girl gave him her period blood which is so disgusting that I would even become like him if that happened to me, so now he has a fear of blood and scary stuff and now wants to be known as a person who will make you turn into stone or make your hair fall off so no one can fall for him, but until his classmate Medaka was assigned to clean the bathroom with him and told him he looks like a character from a manga and Nikado searched it up and got scared, but Medaka did get a photo from Nikado’s former classmate and saw how handsome he looks and then Medaka wanted to make him laugh and be friends with him. They had a very special friendship that even Nikado is comfortable enough to take off his glasses with him. On a school trip Nikado was enjoying soft serve and took of his glasses, but his classmates saw how pretty he was so they asked him what’s his name and of course he lied and soon Arakawa discovered that he was Nikado and wanted to have proof so his ending was Medaka helping him run away from Arakawa and then Hayashi picked up his dropped photo of him and Medaka and slowly the two worlds that didn’t seem like they would cross they did in the end. I do recommend this drama.

I.... what the actual hell was this? The cover and the synopsis seemed so promising and I have to say I'm a sucker for shorts like this, but this one just seemed.... like it had no idea what it was doing.
Who was the main cast?
What was the plot?
What was the genre?
What was the POINT?

There is zero answers to any of those questions. I feel like the writer put all these ideas into a blender, threw it against the wall and saw what stuck going "eh, this will work"

This is in no way saying the acting was awful by the way, if anything, the acting by everyone was great. It's not their fault they were handed a shitty story. But I really and honestly do not understand. Right off the bat I was confused and felt like I had missed important information THAT WAS NEVER GIVEN!! There was never a "set" main lead(s), they just kept bringing in new characters with every episode and I felt nothing for the characters. We are given little to no information about any of these characters. It's like the whole thing was scrambled.

I know there are a few episodes that make it loop around like some freaking Pulp Fiction crap but even then you're left going "What the fuck?" I hate not knowing things. Like what was the significance of the book mentioned? Also, why bother bringing up Junji and his manga like it played a huge part, when in reality, it DIDN'T!! Just because one of the characters looked like a Junji character? That's not how that works and I honestly don't see it. He wanted to be all scary so people would leave him alone and even then that makes no sense since he was the terrified one. I get what happened to him, I do. But his story makes no sense to me. And neither does the guy that goes around taking pictures of signs. See, I remember no ones names. None. and that's sad. I barely remember what half of them look like. What was the point of introducing a female to sign boy? What was the point of deep voice guy thinking sign boy was cute, but, "not in that way. The panda was cute"

This show was a mess and now my brain is a mess.

There literally was no plot to this at all. Even with each episode there wasn't a single plot or meaning to them and the ending was just as ridiculous as the whole show. I really had hoped that they would explain SOMETHING. ANYTHING. But nope. It ended like best friends parting ways after knowing each other for years.... meanwhile I'm screaming at the screen "WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?!?!" Ugh. Yeah.... I hated this show. Sorry....

Muchuu-sa, Kimi ni / Captivated By You

(Honey Lemon Soda)
