Seki was born into an impoverished family in Shakanai Village in Akita Prefecture and was married off to the Kobayashi family at age fifteen. Seki couldn't write, but she was a kind mother. Her second son Takiji gets a job at a bank, but gradually becomes involved in the labor movement. His novel about the plight of laborers leads to his being pegged as a dangerous element, and he dies at the age of twenty-nine due to torture by the Special Higher Police.
