(Not That) Innocent (2021)

Interpretive sensual dance?

This 5 minute spin off was more of an artistic interpretive dance... A slightly insane dance that seems to show Noahs way of understanding the word, whereas the series focuses on Wu Zheng perspective.

Here we see people in masks, wether looking a bit like a combo of the playboy bunny with BDSM in an ever spinning world where fear lives and the color of the light changes. Extremely artistic and wild as apposed to series which is very calm and low key everything.

comparing the two makes this series seem a lot deeper, better ads a whole other dimension making me re-evaluate some of the parts from the series if this makes any sense in any way, so if you watch Innocence make sure not to mis the (not that) innocent.

As other reviewers stated, this was more done in a music video style than a short film style (but without actually becoming a music video). It seemed to show the chaotic nature of the main character of the film, and it did so quite well. But if you are expecting a clear story or distinct emotions, without having seen the parent drama, you are gonna feel like you're missing quite a number of pieces (I say this as someone who has not yet gotten around to the parent story - and will thus likely edit this review after doing so).

In some ways, I'm remined of a club scene in the BL short film Verona (2010). But could not vibe in the same way as I did to Verona. The music was effectively the sound equivalent to strobe lights. Combined with the essentially strobe-style scene portrayals and switching - I felt a very unpleasant level of anxiety. It's probably purposeful, to show Noah's chaos, but it leant to a personally unpleasant experience.

(Kind Of) Innocent

Overall: I'm reviewing this 5 minute short as separate from the original short & the series. Watched on Gagaoolala.

Content Warnings: strobe/flash lighting

What I Liked
- the music, editing, color grading made it feel like a music video/art film which I think it what they were going for
- that the voice over had some decent communication in it
- the bdsm & costume aspects of it

Room For Improvement
- pretty sure the couple times I laughed out loud was not the effect they were going for
- it was surprisingly PG-13, thought it was going to be a bit steamier (because nothing says sexy like a teddy bear sitting at that table, I realize it was supposed to represent the 1 personality...but still...)
- they could have done whipped cream and licking/sucking it off, blown out a massage candle and dripped hot wax on a guys back or abs, many ways to make this less innocent
