Mitsuko Yamaji lived with her mother, Masayo, a former opera singer, her half-brother Toshio and her maiden aunt Yumeko. Like her mother, Mitsuko aspired to be an opera singer and had a boyfriend named Tomita, a customs official. However, for Mitsuko, her brother, Toshio, is more relatable than Tomita. One day, the newspaper reported that Utako Corleoni, a soprano singer, inherited one billion yen from her late husband. Mr. Corleoni was Toshio's father, and Utako and Masayo had been romantic rivals. Meanwhile, Toshio's boss finds out that he has been passing on smuggled goods, and he is forced to decide whether to pay the money or not. The four members of the family head for Utako's house, hoping to receive a portion of the inheritance. A few days later, the siblings steal a wad of 10 million yen from Utako's room and escape. The two of them use the money to buy a boat, which they name "Kofuku-go" (happiness) and decide to use it for smuggling and sail away on it.
