A phantom color painting left by a monk, Enku, who traveled nationwide during the Edo period and carved many Buddhist statues, led to a murder. A man and a woman who gave their pseudonyms in Ise-Shima were stabbed to death. The actual couple whose name was used also turned out to be missing, and Totsugawa infers the relationship between the murder case and the missing case. Eventually, it turns out that the two incidents involve a phantom color painting that is said to have been drawn by Enku. Enku has left 120,000 Buddhist statues and a small number of sumi-e paintings, but it is said that no color paintings have actually been found. Is there a phantom color painting? It is a story that skillfully incorporates historical facts and fiction, and the gentle smile of Enku Buddha is impressive, as Totsukawa meets everywhere in pursuit of the mystery of the murderous incident.
