Must watch..

A thrilling dive into the work of undercover detectives

the worst of evil is probably one of my most favourite crime-genre dramas ever released. it doesn’t bore you with endless conversation whilst also keeping it flowing without 100 fighting scenes every 5 minutes. Ji Chang-Wook is probably by far the best casting that could have been made to be the ML, his transformation from a regular police officer into a undercover drug gang member is really well done, and the emotional strain of that is shown through his relationship with his colleagues and his wife. overall, the worst of evil deserves this rating I’ve given it, it isn’t boring, it has exciting action, and there are constant points in the story where you think Junmo might get caught out. can’t wait to see future dramas like this.

One Man Show

This is my first MDL review and I was skeptical at first to watch dark action , drama but I enjoyed this series so much.

I had Total respect to the ML.
FL supposed to had higher rank than ML but I am surprised how little role she played and the roles had been reversed at the End Game.

Could have been much better...

I tried to find an entertaining and thrilling action drama and ended up watching this. After the ending I can say that I really enjoyed the drama overall but there were a few things that annoyed me.

What I liked about the drama was the acting and action. The action was brutal, bloody and well choreographed. Every character was excellently acted, and Ji Chang Wook makes an amazing performance once again. Bibi in her drama debut was also in a surprisingly big role and definitely was great in her role.

The story is a dark and depressing and features many complex characters who are morally grey and you can't easily say whether or not they're doing the right thing.

The thing I disliked about the drama has to do with how the characters were written. Euijeong's and Junmo's relationship is supposed to be one of the most important parts of the drama yet there's barely any scenes of them together or even talking to each other.

----> Euijeong in general was extremely underdeveloped as a character and a little poorly written. She is supposed to be an experienced police officer yet she doesn't act like one at all. There is not even one scene where Euijeong is participating in a fight or using her police skills (physical or verbal). Even worse, she is just scared and flustered in most scenes. This seriously annoyed me during the show and unfortunately reduced my enjoyment of the drama quite a bit.

Additionally, It might be just me and my stupidity, but there were multiple events where I was left really confused as to why it happened or why a character did what they did. These mostly involved Mingoo's character, his actions were extremely confusing and a little unrealistic to me.

-------------------

All in all, I really enjoyed this drama and loved MOST of the characters, the action, and the noir themes in the drama. Unfortunately I was once again left with a bad taste in my mouth because of the rather poor writing and characterization of some characters. It really is a shame because at first the drama really seemed like it would skyrocket straight to my favorite dramas but, alas, it didn't happen.

The Worst of Evil is a must watch for fans of Ji Chang Wook, action and noir. My final rating for the drama is either 8/10 or 8,5/10

Emotional Rollercoaster

Tldr; 12 eps was perfect for this plotline. I think the ending was a perfect ending to the situation and the acting from everyone was phenomenal. OST.. can't even remember the music lol

The drama starts off with JM, an underdog cop who can't get higher than his desk cop rank. He married into a renowned cop family where everyone is basically a high ranking cop - even his wife. You can see that the marriage is already stained from ep 1 because his in-laws constantly shits on him about his rank in the police world and no matter how many sweet words his wife can whisper into his ears, the wound is too deep. (You know what they say about men who feel inferior).

JM gets proposed by one of his cop sunbae and friend to go undercover and infiltrate KC's gang so they can take down the drug trafficking triad. He only accepts with the condition of getting promoted (see how deep his wound is? and how desperately he wants to prove that he's worthy to his wife & in-laws?)

He joins under a alias and this is the beginning of JM's downfall. At the beginning, he tries his best to stick to his morals and his duty as a copy, but if everyone in the gang keeps suspecting you... it's kind of hard to be all bark and no bite ESP in a gang where they kill. His wife, EJ finds out that he went undercover and ofc.. his wife is KC's first love. Obviously with this known, even if she didn't want to participate in the investigation, she HAS to be part of it bc KC knows her.

I know this adds to the plot.. but let's talk about EJ. Her character was bland to me. I don't hate the actress but her character gave nothing but a headache to the plotline. I guess we can say that JM really turned into someone who didn't want to be in order to protect her but she really just put herself back into the situation of always being there even when it wasn't needed. Sure her first move was helpful to JM to get deeper into the gang and to gain KC's trust... but grass is always greener on the other side.

The love triangle begins and this was when I got annoyed of the drama. Here's an example of how the industry not knowing how to write strong FL. After the 3rd... 4th... 5th time EJ met up with KC for NO GOOD REASON, was when you can tell that she was masking her feelings by trying to convince herself that she was only doing this for her husband.

YES, both JM and EJ cheated and their marriage was doomed from the start. I will say... EJ really caught feelings and JM just felt bad for HR like he did for KC. He was able to relate to the both of them bc of his own fucked up past. If he really like HR is one thing, but I know (& the audience can see) that he was conflicted and confused with his actions towards HR. I want to say he's been undercover for so long and him and EJ weren't able to communicate, he was weak. But he still cheated.

The down fall of the gang was not bc KC got involved with EJ again. It was bc he got emotional about Taeho. His inner circle kept telling him how sus how everything was happening since JM joined the gang and he didn't listen. Sure he did a mere background check, but as someone who is the big boss of his gang.. he really done goofed in believing people when he should know that documents can be forged.

The brotherhood of the drama was strong until it wasn't. There's always a power struggle and jealousy and betrayal - this is why you can't get emotional about the past and just let people walk away after betraying you.

My take on the last 20 mins of ep 12. JM felt an emotional bond to KC no matter how much he wants to deny it. That's why he gave him the opportunity to escape and actually live the good life he wanted/dreamt of. But KC's (lk) obsession over EJ was his downfall. When the 3 of them were in the couple's house, you can already see the dynamic has shifted. EJ couldn't see JM the same anymore, JM couldn't forget everything that he has done and what has happened when he was undercover, and KC.... he was too wrapped up in trying to figure out if EJ really loved him to understand the great opportunity JM gave him.
I find the talk between a mafia boss and a cop about being sinners funny. After all he has done, he talks about being a sinner but blames EJ about being a sinner for mm.. essentially doing her job. & EJ talking about how she will repent for the rest of her life for... ONCE AGAIN, doing her duty as a cop. IDC if he was your first love, he's a mafia boss who kills and is importing drugs into your country. To think, someone who grew up in a cop family, she'd have a stronger mindset. But back to the point... I believe that JM shot KC when he was about to unalive himself was bc it was his last attempt to show his wife that he loves her. I know.. that sounds weird bc he just SHOT someone in front of her BUT my point is, he knew that if KC unalived himself in front of them, EJ will blame herself for the rest of her life. If JM shot him, she will have him to blame. Their marriage ending was a good choice.

The ending was great for the situation. I personally don't think there needs to be a season 2 (if there even is one) bc season 2 will have a new plotline and probably a new cast. They've exhausted every character they could in this season.

Oh and one last thing... considering how this is BIBI's first real role. She DELIVERED. I loved her character more than EJ. The chemistry between BIBI and JCW was 100000/10.

Leaves you wanting more.

the story-telling(screenplay) is awesome and it's complemented by ji-chang-wook's brilliant acting.
the lead actress too did a good job, but her character actually created the mess with unwarranted interference despite the lead's plea.....

although episode 12 felt a bit rushed, it leaves you wanting more of park-junmo's life {JCW}.
Hope there is a sequel to this one. Would love to see what will happen to the broken relationship and potential direction the JCW's character can take from this point on.

Good Enough

Korean Drama '' The Worst of Evil '' is a new age noir drama about a man who sinks into the dark side and a villain who gets to be his friend.

The drama starts out not as strongly as it should, but, after the first bumpy episode, it picks up, getting more and more thrilling and suspenseful. The characters were interesting, moreover, and their chemistry aided the drama a lot to be more tragic and intense.

The performances were, in addition, spot on, especially by the main trio who really excelled. It was also nice that they didn't add too much romance to the drama and they rather focused on the bromance and the action scenes. The latter were nicely choreographed and smoothly embedded into the story.

Finally, the cinematography was impressive and what helped the drama stand out.

So, overall, eight out of ten.

Riveting

April 2024
The Worst of Evil, 18+, 2023, 12eps, Disney+
Synopsis and cast attached.

Very intense, violent and multi-layered drama with excellent pace, characters and acting. The script was intelligent and apart from 1 character's antics, very believable.

A stubborn, relentless, but 'good' police officer (Ji Chang-wook), with a no nonsense and short fused personality, goes deep undercover. Watching how his personality changes with almost every episode, is often an uncomfortable and anxious watch.

The rules by which organisations operate, whether they be gangsters or the establishment, are all basically for totally selfish reasons, although often disguised as being for the good of others, or a better life.

It comes across strongly in this, how just about everyone uses others, or gets used, purely to meet their own agendas. Characters are incredibly fickle, with making and holding on to money and power, plus kudos, being the nr.1 motivators.

There are lots of links between characters, with some being quite a surprise. There is a weird, but unstoppable, connection and bond between the main characters, as they are forced to cover the backs of their targets, yet also find themselves being protected and trusted by them. This impacts on outcomes, in so many ways.

I found that the most irritating, vile, and stuck-in-the-70s character, was Detective Hwang Min-gu, excellently played by Yoon Gyung-ho. I absolutely detested him! A real bullying sleaze ball! Why his character was allowed to constantly get in the way and jeopardise such an important international police investigation, was beyond me.

He was subtle as a brick and openly turned up at scenes already under surveillance. Yet at no point did any higher ups reign in him or transfer him out of the way, until the operation was concluded. I found that ridiculous.

The ending was conclusive and not surprising at all to me, but was confusing in one pretty major aspect. I did not understand JCW's behaviour at all and say why further on.

An exciting watch and whilst not something I'd see again, it certainly captivated and entertained me.

** SPOILER AHEAD **

The part that confused me, was Jun-mo shooting Gi-cheol, rather than letting him kill himself, as he was about to do. If Jun-mo had shot him in the arm, shoulder, or anywhere else, to incapacitate and prevent him from shooting himself in the head, I could have understood it; but not shooting to kill him. It seemed pointless and actually turned it into murder.

Subpar at Plot, Amazing Acting

I had high expectations of this drama because of the cast, but I’m afraid it was disappointing with respect to the writing. I thought that acting was amazing throughout, but I simply couldn’t get into the story. It wasn’t engaging enough and relied on making one side weaker without substantial reasons for the other side to win. If you’re looking for an intense crime thriller with an interesting plot, you’ll feel the latter doesn’t quite catch up. It’s intense nonetheless. It’s also quite brutal with all the action scenes, but most of them feel like it’s for the ‘vibes’.

worth it to watch

perfect story and acting.
