Yip Chau Sum is a songstress craved by nightclub manager Wong Man King. Chau Sum rebuffs his advances. Instead, she offers her affections to Pak Chiu Man, but they are separated as war erupts. After the war, Chau Sum ends up in Hong Kong while Chiu Man works as a reporter in Shanghai. When Chiu Man leaves to work for his uncle in Singapore, he stops over in Hong Kong, where he meets Chau Sum and their affair is revived. A jealous Man King degrades Chiu Man for his financial situation. Chiu Man vows to return in three years' time to marry Chau Sum. In Singapore, Chiu Man sends money to Chau Sum, asking her to leave her dancehall work. Meanwhile, Man King continues to tempt and seduce her. Chiu Man becomes ill, and the correspondence between the two discontinues. Chau Sum's letters are kept by his secretary, Lee Chui Lan, who is in love with him. Chui Lan even writes to Chau Sum, telling her that he has fallen in love with another woman. Believing this and facing financial difficulties, Chau Sum agrees to marry Man King. After their marriage, Man King grows tired of Chau Sum. Chiu Man returns to visit Chau Sum. After reprimanding her for being fickle, he leaves. An anguished Chau Sum kills Man King.
