Fiction & reality
Boys is a short (in all about 40min) drama made in connection with Gay Games Hong Kong 2023. every episode ending with a couple of minutes of promotional talk! The story is a simple one not trying to explain anything or deal with serious societal issues.
Ho Yin, a university student, wrote a play about his high school failed relationship. During the rehearsals, he falls for the actor playing opposite him, Boris. They start a relationship until one night they cross paths with the ex boyfriend. After the play closes, Ho Yin realizes that his feelings for Boris were not real and they part for good with Boris seriously brokenhearted.
This whole production looks very amateurish, the actors are mediocre(the actor playing Boris had every muscle on his face continuously moving, trembling which was so disconcerting to watch and annoying to boot!), the cinematography almost non-existent (except for the nice shot of HK in the credits and different screen ratios in order to differentiate from "real life" scenes and those "fictional, from the play" ones ), music is OK.
Well it is a curiosity from Hong Kong and as such worth a look though it is nothing extraordinary it still is a romance about the thin line between the fiction and reality and the need to be careful how to tread that line and try not to hurt anyone by prolonging the misunderstanding!
